Santorum was incredible! Great job! He won big time. Newt did pretty good too.
CSPAN Live feed:
The news media had a applause meter and Washington Post national politics reporter Amy Gardner indicated on Twitter:
@ AmyEGardner : Big standing O for Newt in Birmingham -- much rowdier reception than Santorum a few minutes ago.

@ AmyEGardner : Newt just promised to find one trillion barrels of oil during his presidency.

@ AmyEGardner : Newt wins the applause-o-meter at Birmingham prez forum (over Santorum).
Rick Santorum must have made it clear to everyone in Alabama and the rest of the states that he is a lawyer is paid to speak as long as possible (and while people are still conscious...)
Let’s cut the crap at what you’re really up to. You don’t want to compare speeches as much you want to compare the STYLE of the SPEECH.
Just because Newt is a better public speaker doesn’t mean he’s a better candidate. Santorum had exactly the same number of key points as Gingrich in his speech.
If your judging style, go watch American Idol. I swear to God, there are some of you who probably would have never voted for Lincoln back in the 1860’s because he didn’t “look” or “sound” Presidential until much later, and after a girl told him to grow a beard.
Calvin Coolidge, a capable President after the Teapot Dome Scandal of Harding was also a capable President, but since “Silent Cal” didn’t interact well with the MSM or voters after his son’s death, you people probably would have had an issue voting for him as well.
The election is not American Idol.
Luckily, I get to wait for June 5 to cast my ballot, and will vote for California's huge 172 delegates which might keep one of these four from sealing the nomination, and will vote for the one least likely to win, and with the help of the Texans, who most likely will hold their primary about the same time, we will be able to force an open convention.
If that occurs, there is a strong possibility that the convention could find a nominee that we can all get behind, whoever she is.
Okay, here’s what I posted in another thread regarding my impressions:
I watched both candidates. This was a good forum to actually view the candidates. Alabama did a great job.
Both candidates did well. Santorum started out a little slow but once he began talking about bigger issues/concepts of this election, he hit it out of the park.
Gingrich did very well, also. His presentation was shorter (there was no time limit) and more specific.
What I found interesting was the contrast that this kind of forum highlighted between the two candidates. Gingrich is a quick answer, detailed idea man. Santorum is a big picture, core principle man. Gingrich seems to be more top down solution, where Santorum is more of a bottom up (from the people) solution man.
Gingrich gets you cheering when hes blasting obama or telling you the way something should be done. Santorum speaks about larger concepts/principcles building up to his point (in this talk, it was about freedom). Santorum’s style is more inspirational.....I havent heard a presidential candidate be able to talk/communicate like that in some time.
