Judge calls out T-shirt wearers during animal abuse hearing

In the midst of setting a trial date for a Jonesborough man accused of torturing and killing the family pet, a Yorkie named Honey, a judge took time to call out animal rights activists in court to tell him they offended him.

Dustin Ricky Harrell, 22, 1178 Old Stage Road, Jonesborough, is charged with aggravated animal cruelty for Honey’s death in November.

Court records indicate Harrell tortured the 4-pound miniature dog for four hours at the family’s residence before she died.

He’s accused of throwing the dog down a flight of stairs, attempting to drown her and putting her in a clothes dryer for four minutes.

An investigator in the case said in the affidavit that each time Harrell injured the dog, he would comfort it. Honey eventually died in Harrell’s arms.

At one point during the ordeal, Harrell apparently put painter’s tape around Honey’s mouth because she was crying after he broke her leg.

He also told the investigator that he used an Icy Hot sleeve on Honey’s broken leg.

When Honey stopped crying, Harrell took the tape off her mouth. After that, she started bleeding from the mouth and died.

During each of Harrell’s court hearings, animal cruelty activists have attended and worn T-shirts that say “Stop Animal Abuse” and “Justice for Honey.”

...
During the hearing, Cupp asked three women wearing the “Justice for Honey” shirts to stand.

“That offends me,” Cupp said. “You don’t need to tell me” to get justice.

“That’s what this courtroom is for,” he said.

Cupp told the women they cannot wear the T-shirts to any more court hearings.

This piece of filth needs to be treated as he treated poor little Honey. As I sat next to my own 5 pound Yorkie reading this, I wanted to puke. What kind of excrement does this?

The judge already said the perp was in counselling. It sounds to me like he’s already making excuses for the poor fellow. It sounds to me like the Judge probably abuses animals himself.

Could be somebody far gone on meth, but another possibility is “Excrement” that had been treated as such when little.

Jurors are presumed to be able to read.

it is the precident.

so spectators wearing bloody t-shirts or bloody pictures to influence a jury would be equally wrong.

it is still communication.

You probably never have any experience in a court room...its the judges territory, he sets any rules he wants. Proper decorum and dress is under his orders...He is the judge and absolute under the law it is his rules that must be obeyed or you go to jail for contempt of court...

I don't think YOU understand. This is not an issue of 'proper decorum and dress'. The judge was 'offended' because he didn't want the people to tell HIM what to think or do. The Judge's ego felt offended. He needs to grow up and get on with his job.

“That offends me,” Cupp said. “You don’t need to tell me” to get justice. “That’s what this courtroom is for,” he said.

Was there a jury in that courtroom in this specific situation? I think not. THe judge’s ego was ‘offended’...because he’s a baby.

Please don't feed the Fawn, she's a well-known FR animal rights nutjob.

If you don't believe me, all you have to do is look at her replies on this thread and how she will respond to this post.

I will repeat what you do not understand...the judge is in charge of all things that go on in his court. Period...he also has the power to toss a lawyer in jail for comptempt of court if they refuse his orders...grow up. People have been jailed for contempt and they stay in jail until they do as the judge says....reporters have spent months in jail for refusing to give a source in a trial. Read and learn, its not a matter of what you personally think should be done, but what the judge orders to be done....if you don’t like it tough luck to you. Shirts with saying on them can influence a jury, big no no. JUdge doesn’t need a bunch of nit wits trying to influence him. That is what sayings on T shirts do or they wouldn’t be wearing them. Answer me if you choose, but I will not be answering you, ignorance cannot be debated...

Poor you...you still don’t get it. The judge was offended ONLY because he thought the people were trying to tell him what he should do. A more intelligent Judge would simply ignore them.

He was focusing on his job. The defendant should not be able to argue that a conviction was based upon any information not entered into evidence. Allowing the T-shirts would have given the perp a basis for appeal which the judge has now denied him.

Of all the comments on this thread, yours was the best.

Sorry but they were protesting in his court room and that is wrong. They should have let him provide the justice and not been there making a display of themselves for political points.

They showed disrespect to the court and those in attendance.

I understand that they were protesting a monster, but inside the court room or the court house is not the place for such things. The judge was right since they were disrespecting the setting.
