"March 13, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- State Rep. Derrick Smith is just in his first year of office, but federal authorities on Tuesday afternoon said the Chicago democrat had already learned Illinois' notorious pay-to-play.

Smith was arrested Tuesday on a federal bribery charge after allegedly accepting a $7,000 cash bribe in exchange for an official letter of support for a daycare center that he believed was seeking a state grant. "I don't want no trace of it," Smith allegedly said of the bribe money he demanded in cash. He is a college graduate with a master's degree from DePaul University."

Well, since he “don’t want no trace,” that means he wants it all!

What fine English skills he possesses!

The term masters degree sounds racist to me. It must be that dog whistle racism I’ve been hearing about. This guy had a masters degree and he was still as dumb as dirt. It must be racist.

“Business as usual in Chicago and Springfield”

You’re right but I still can’t understand this kind of behavior. He had a decent education and was elected by the people to serve them and he takes bribes? He had a bright future and could have been known as an honorable man but I guess that doesn’t hold much value anymore.

Wow, it didn’t take this guy long...a rookie mistake.

“He is a college graduate with a master’s degree from DePaul University.”

From what I’ve seen of the graduates from that place recently, I’m not surprised.

At this point, do you think that they might build a prison in Illinois exclusively for politicians? I’m not thinking that it should be cushier. I’m thinking along the lines of Mao’s “re-education camps”.

It probably wouldn't make sense in your neighborhood or mine. But in order to get elected he may have had to pay a considerable sum to the people needed to register and vote for dead people. There may have been payments to the powers-that-be in Chicago to permit him to run.

In addition to student loans, this guy may spend years paying off favors that got him where he is. Imagine the size of the corrupted economy in Chicago. This guy may have had to donate to Obama in order to receive the support he got.

I’ve been thinking of how to deter the rampant political corruption in politics.

Political parties should be responsible for the candidates they allow to run representing their party. If one of their members is removed from office for wrong-doing, the remaining parties should be the ones to elect the replacement.

Of course, the individual who actually broke the law should go to prison—general population.

No reason to get wee wee’d up - ebonics is an important qualification for many informed voters in selecting their candidates.

I have a better way to deter it. Make the first offense carry a mandatory 25 year prison sentence. Make the second offense a Capital crime with the method of execution being hung.
