A suspected car bomb attack has taken place at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan, as US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta was flying into the British base. The Pentagon said an Afghan national drove a stolen pick-up truck on to the ramp area of the base's airfield and then into a ditch running alongside the runway.
It is understood the vehicle did not explode, but the driver caught fire. He was arrested as he tried to run away.
The incident happened about the same time Mr Panetta's plane was landing.
Maybe he will come under ‘sniper fire’ that didn’t happen, Clinton style.
Here’s the latest from the BBC:
Vehicle ‘burst into flames’ on Camp Bastion’s runway
A vehicle has driven onto the runway at the main British military base in Afghanistan and burst into flames, reports say.
The incident took place as the US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta was visiting Camp Bastion, in Helmand province.
A spokesman for the Nato-led Isaf force said the driver of the vehicle was receiving medical treatment.
At no point was anyone on board Mr Panetta’s plane at risk, he added.
The vehicle was at the opposite end of the runway from the plane; Mr Panetta is not believed to have been on board at the time.
A flash was seen from the vehicle, but military sources have told the BBC that they would be “wary” of describing it as an explosion...
“In a sign of the nervousness surrounding Mr. Panettas trip, the Marines and other troops who were waiting in a tent for the defense secretary to speak were abruptly asked by their commander to get up, place their weapons M-16 and M-4 automatic rifles and 9-mm pistols outside the tent and then return unarmed. The commander, Sgt. Maj. Brandon Hall, told reporters he was acting on orders from superiors.”
Probably a Chevy Volt.
Yes. Telling the truth would be a career limiting move...
Vehicle burst into flames on Camp Bastions runway
Maybe it was a Chevy Volt?
‘Car bomb’ in quotes? A so-called car bomb? Maybe it just had flames painted on it’s sides.

These people are afraid of our troops. Leon Panetta thought our troops...OUR TROOPS were going to kill him.
What a POS.
It's a socialist thing. Hitler demanded the same of Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe personnel in many circumstances; Erich Hartmann balked at being disarmed on at least one occasion.
Hahahaha...that GIF makes me roar everytime I see it!
Friendly fire incident.
“Leon Panetta thought our troops...OUR TROOPS were going to kill him.”
That never occured to me. Oh, how I wish you were wrong. That is unimaginable. But I do fear you’re on the money.
If true, what a POS is right.
Top Secret! is one of the most underrated movies of all time.
I didn’t know they sold Volts in Afghanistan....
Mandatory, captive audience no doubt. I guess Obama hasn't sufficiently remade the military yet to assuage his and his functionaries' paranoia.
And to top everything the commanders made our troops disarm.
This has to be a first. I can’t think of a single reason for American GIs to disarm in a combat zone.
bump for later
What would have been FUNNY is if after all of Obama's apologies, and his disarming the Marines before their meeting - that he gets taken out by an Afghan.
It just proves - political correctness does kill!
And make sure we don’t have enough troops to protect our own land in a SHTF situation such as an EMP attack by Iran from Venezuela that signals the Hezbollah operatives to begin the communist-Islamist coup by taking over state capitols, another run on the bank by Soros’ communist and Islamist allies to collapse the world economy, or black riots on the command of the unions...
It’s electoral-defeat insurance for Obama.
