DHHS Official Grilled Over Preschooler’s Rejected Lunch - Lawmakers want to know why 4-year-old

RALEIGH — State lawmakers questioned a N.C. Department of Health and Human Services official at a hearing Tuesday to determine why a Hoke County preschooler’s homemade turkey sandwich was replaced with chicken nuggets.

Members of the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services wanted to know if a teacher at West Hoke Elementary School was following state law when she offered a 4-year-old girl a cafeteria tray containing chicken nuggets, a sweet potato, bread, and milk as an alternative to her homemade turkey and cheese sandwich, potato chips, banana, and apple juice.

Deborah Cassidy, director of the DHHS Division of Child Development and Early Education, also was asked whether the cafeteria lunch provided to the 4-year-old was more nutritious then her homemade lunch and if the teacher (who has resigned from the school) should have faced any disciplinary action.

Cassidy told the committee that officials from the school and the school district have refused to discuss the matter with her.

The incident drew headlines nationally, and lawmakers wanted to see what steps should be taken to make sure the event was not repeated.

Cassidy testified that although the teacher did not violate the state agency’s policy, her division would have recommended the teacher go about implementing it in a more tactful way.

“What actions has the state taken to ensure we don’t have situations where a perfectly good turkey sandwich is being replaced with a bunch of fried chicken nuggets, which doesn’t make sense to the public or to any of us?” Rep. Nelson Dollar, R-Wake, asked Cassidy.

Even if the school was saturated with nutritionists who were top in their fields, they have no business whatsoever messing with a kid’s lunch from home unless the kid is eating poison, totally rotten food or brought alcohol.

Just look how much money and milk is wasted because they put a carton of milk on the kids tray and the kid then chunks it in the trash because they don’t want milk.

Every lunch served has a carton of milk so they have to buy that much milk every day. If it was left up to the kids to take milk if they wanted milk, the amount of milk served would be a fraction of what it is now.

Not only would the schools save money, but the price you pay for milk at the store would drop.

Same goes for all this other mandatory crap they put on kids tray that they don’t want to eat.

Any school official who is not an educated nutritionist has no business making a decision like this for any child

Let me fix that for ya.

Any school official who is not an educated nutritionist has no business making a decision like this for any child.

I can relate to the milk thing. I haven’t drank milk since I was about 5. In grade school in the mid 50s they had the milk program in schools, a foul mixture of skim milk and powdered milk.

The teacher forced me to drink down a glass even after I told her I didn’t like it and it made me sick. She took the glass from me and said “Now that was not so bad, was it?” at which time I promptly puked on her shoes. She never approached me again to drink the “milk”.

I don’t have any kids.My point was that these people are not qualified to make any decision about nutrition and therefore should not be doing this.

Well technically most parents are not "qualified to make any decision about nutrition" from a professional standpoint either.

you are the ones adding to my comment when that is not what was meant.

What you implied was that if the teachers were qualified nutritionists, then they would be qualified to make decisions about confiscating sack lunches and replacing them with government approved lunches.

The schools should not be making any decisions at all about what the parents choose to feed their children. I don't care what kind of degrees in nutrition they have, it is none of their business.

You left the door open my friend. Your comment suggested that under certain circumstances confiscating sack lunches prepared by parents and replacing them with government sanctioned lunches would be apropos. This is just the kind of football the liberals would run with.

you are absolutely right. the gove is not qualified and should not be allowed to do this. If it was the just the teacher interpretation it still doesn’t matter. But I do think a teacher choosing fried chicken nugges over a turkey sand is very telling ....I dont think the teacher is qualified to teach anyone

Deborah Cassidy, director of the DHHS Division of Child Development and Early Education, testified that although the teacher did not violate the state agency’s policy, her division would have recommended the teacher go about implementing it in a more tactful way.

This is a blatant lie. Cassady needs to be fired immediately. This was a GROSS violation of policy, law and everything else, by a bunch of governmnet goons against a child, and this... creature... is defending it as legitimate. She makes me sick.

“Are chicken nuggets deemed to be more nutritious than sliced turkey?” asked Sen. Louis Pate, R-Wayne.

“That’s beyond my expertise,” said Cassidy. “I’d be shooting in the dark on that one,” she added. “I don’t know.”

Later in the hearing, Cassidy explained to the committee that it was her agency’s “responsibility to educate parents” about making healthy, nutritious choices for their children.

She's in charge of nutrition education, but she doesn't know the difference between a home-made turkey sandwich and fused-gunk chicken nuggets? Oh, but it gets better - disagree with one of her goons and she'll steal your child at gunpoint. AND she can openly lie to an investigating committee and fear no reprisals for her utter contempt of any oversight.

This country has gone stark raving mad.

And it should be noted: I can eat sandwich meat, as long as it is cold & very fresh. But once it is not that, then I can’t handle it, at all. Gagging results, to the point of barfing in a projectile manner.

What results in gagging and projectile vomiting is reading your insidious attempts to make the actions of food gestapos, and the replacement of the authority parents with that of the state, sound reasonable.

Go lick a jackboot, you slithering communist vermin.

Lawmakers want to know why 4-year-old got chicken nuggets and teacher resigned

Because the "schools" get more federal money for each child they "feed".

Troll alert.

What part of my message endorsed what happened?

And how do we know the student didn’t prefer the nuggets?

The student/teacher conversation is the important part, and we know nothing of that conversation.

That you believe this is gestapo behavior is your own problem.

The way I look at it is this, it’s a function of life with public schools. Parents signed their children’s lives over to the public school system, and all the control and indoctrination that entails, they probably shouldn’t be getting upset their child is being fed chicken nuggets.

Please projectile vomit your hatred somewhere else, and simultaneously, attempt to grasp this is simply the result of parents allowing the state to educate their children.

Troll feeding session over.

Besides, with your comment, I can tell you are way far left of my standing on politics. You actually think that if you hand your child off to the public school system daily, you should expect to still exercise some control over that child’s life in school. I don’t, and reality proves me right.

So keep sending your kids to these leftist indoctrination camps, and look in the mirror, there you will find the true communist! The one who wants the “free” education, but wants to somehow forgo the indoctrination and control that comes along with it.

You know what’s worse? I am forced to contribute to the entire crooked system as a working adult with no children whatsoever. I have to pay to watch you march your miserable children into these communist mechas everyday, and on my dime! Get lost, troll.
