March 14, 2012 - Favorite Son Santorum Thumps Romney In Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Santorum Ties Obama In Fall Matchup

Pennsylvania Republicans are going for favorite son Rick Santorum big time, giving the former U.S. Senator a 36 - 22 percent lead over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the Keystone State's presidential primary, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul has 12 percent, with 8 percent for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

In a head-to-head matchup, Santorum tops Romney 52 - 32 percent among Republican voters, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

If Santorum gets to November, he gets 44 percent of Pennsylvania voters, to 45 percent for President Barack Obama - too close to call. In other possible November matchups: President Obama tops Romney 46 - 40 percent; Obama beats Gingrich 50 - 37 percent; The president leads Paul 45 - 40 percent. In the four-person Republican contest, Santorum leads Romney 41 - 18 percent among women and 30 - 27 percent among men, 50 - 21 percent among Tea Party members, 44 - 20 percent among self-described conservatives and 46 - 17 percent among white evangelical Christians. Romney leads 29 - 20 percent among self-described moderates.

"Pennsylvania Republicans are turning to their native son, former Sen. Rick Santorum. The last time we surveyed the Keystone State, during the Gingrich boomlet in December, the former House Speaker led the GOP pack with 31 percent, followed by Gov. Mitt Romney with 17 percent and Santorum with 9 percent," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Pennsylvania Republican women like Santorum over Romney more than men."

"Santorum's lead among conservatives, Tea Party members and white evangelical Christians is what we have found in other states," Malloy added.

"What we've also seen in other states is that Romney comes from behind, riding a tidal wave of negative advertising. Whether attack ads work against a native son remains to be seen."

....

From March 7 - 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,256 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 508 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percentage points.

See if that momentum continues after all the other states are counted between now and the 24th. Add several million in attack ads, exposing Santorum’s checkered past, and then we will see where all this party hoopla is headed.

Hmmmm. It almost seems like you *want* Romney to beat Santorum. Say it ain't so, Psycho!

The problem is that I don’t see Santorum winning either. Then what does he do at the brokered convention. If he has more delegates than Romney, than all bets are off. No telling what will happen. But if Romney is the front-runner, but with fewer than he needs to clinch the nomination, I worry that Rick will barter his own delegates for the VP slot on the Romney ticket.

Nope, the Newtster comes in last. Quite a fall from December when he led the pack.

Even more recently than that, too, IIRC... After taking SC, he was at one time cruising along in the low 40s for support and leading everyone by double-digits... then came toxic Mitt's ads in FL, and, aside from GA, he was never the same again.

Just to add a little trivia, Pennsylvania can also lay claim on Ron Paul as a native son. He grew up not far from me in Pittsburg’s Green Tree area.

What in particular leads you to worry about this? I'm curious.

Can your pointless rhetoric and personal attacks. I know it is hard for you, but stick to your own limited agenda. Mine is very well documented.

You forgot one...

“who’s riding on the wave from the attacks on Newt because he can’t ride on his own wave.”

The democrates are salivating over Santorum and pushing all the buttons to see him in.....note there’s been no ambush agains Santorum to date....but it’s coming...and he’ll go down.

You really crack me up.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone with a nastier disposition yet thinner skin.

You make legitimate points. One factor you left out is Gingrich delegates. If the Newtster barters his delegate for the VP slot on a Santorum ticket, then we got something!

Romney’s weaker after last night. He’s gaining delegates but so are the othere. If he loses Puerto Rico or Illinois, he’ll be weaker still. He may limp into the convention with the most delegates, but with soft support, he may not win on the first ballot. And then the fun beginss.

Newt was right about Leonard Wood in 1920. He was the favorite and Harding ended up with the nomination and won in a landslide. Harding and Coolidge went on to slash taxes and the national debt and the economy roared.

I'm just curious to see how you guys cover your trashing of Santorum once Newt is out of the race.

Santorums picking up steam with each primary victory.

And I'm thrilled but I have to say, I don't get it unless God is intervening. I've seen some of the anti-Santorum ads and they are brutal. He's outspent 10 to 1 at a minimum and yet is surviving and thriving in these primaries.

Not doubting God has a part, personally praying around the clock, but Rick's success defies all the campaigns in recent history.

That would be a good outcome, a Santorum/Gingrich ticket.

I could get behind that.

I would prefer Gingrich/Santorum but it doesn’t look like that one is in the cards.

I could care less what you think. Apparently it bothers you so much that I express my right to an opinion, you have to go out of your way to insult me in order to achieve a reaction. So who really has the thinner skin or nastier disposition?

The momentum can change in mere hours in the midst of this chaotic primary.

The momentum just shifted to Santorum...
