I once read that the Captains character was based (loosely of course) on Captain Hornblower. Most of Star Trek is based on the Forbidden Planet, including the captain getting the girl.

Kirk: "You see to it that the dilithium crystal hangs together, Scotty and I'll make sure our guests are comfortable. I'll be in my quarters."
Scotty: "Oh, aye, Captain, I'll get right on it. And I'll make sure your food replicator is cross-linked to the waste disposal system, ye sorry sack of Cardassian #&**#@#!"

The one with the Phaser. What they don’t teach in Starfleet security school is that the bodyguard is always taken out first.

I watched about 5 minutes of the new Star Trek movie the other day.
“Kirk” was running around with swollen hands, I got the impression that was supposed to be funny.

“Forbidden Planet” was a classic and a very entertaining classic at that.
I have it on VHS tape, need to see if it is on DVD. That girl was as hot as they come, what was her name, Altaira or something like that?

I once read that the Captains character was based (loosely of course) on Captain Hornblower. Yes, that was one of Roddenberry's claims. It makes more sense than the other reference that he used ("Wagon Train to the stars").
There's a bit of old seafaring language sprinkled into the Star Trek franchise, though some of it is obscure and re-tasked.
For example, warping a ship (usually *out* from a quay) means moving it by hauling on a line that is fastened to or around a piling, anchor, or pier.
BTW, if you've seen the recent film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, you'll notice a continuation of the captain / ship's doctor friendship as a plot element. I can't recall if that was present in Hornblower; I haven't read that since I was a child.
