I received a phone call from them two days before the event informing me that because this was a “public event” (I would like to know what is the definition of “public” and “private”) we would be required to apply for a “special use permit.” If we did not do so immediately, we would be charged a ridiculous fine.

First mistake was not immediately informing the caller "You have been misinformed. This is a private party for our friends. Goodbye."

Wouldn’t you want to “vet” pet pigs different from farmed swine? It ought to be the responsibility of the rabbit meat farmer to procure rabbits that are certified sanitary for meat use, and if they are not thus certified then don’t get them, not even for “farm pets.” In the meantime leave the folks who keep Peter Rabbit in a cage in the living room, alone.

Well, you would want to make a distinction between a car pool and a taxi service, no? If it was a non profit (but also non loss) affair, then what was wrong. Private clubs can charge dues and fees etc. and still be private.

Bunnies "do it" like bunnies ~ truly amazing animals.

They really aren't at all like modern domesticated horses.

It's a relative risk sort of thing

So how come the Amish can sell their farm-produced wares or have barnraisings with long tables full of organic,self-prepared food, and there’s nary a peep? I’m not attacking the Amish, they’re good folks, but right is right. They make money selling produce (and baked goods that aren’t “brought to temperature”) or inspected by anyone other than the farmer that washes the horse poop off of it before selling it.
