SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. soldier accused of slaughtering 16 Afghan villagers last weekend saw his friend's leg blown off the day before the rampage, his lawyer said Thursday.

Seattle attorney John Henry Browne told The Associated Press that according to his client's family, the suspect was standing next to another U.S. soldier when that soldier was gravely injured.

There's obviously plenty to this story that has not come out.

What are our objectives in Afghanistan again?

“What are our objectives in Afghanistan again?”

Find Osama Bin Laden! That’s where we OUGHT to be, instead of in Iraq fighting for Exxon/sarcasm;)

So have a friend that had his leg blown off is justification for mass murder, and we have an American lawyer saying that. If the glove don't fit!

Not a justication just bringing more facts to light. This is his 4th tour of duty in a war zone. The second tour he had a head injury. The third tour he had a leg injury.Seeing the buddy next to him having a leg blown off, I could see him snapping. I would reserve judgement till all the facts are known.

And why was this soldier’s friend put in an open position where his leg could be blown off? Which US national objective did this serve? Who are his officers who placed him in harms way? Did his commander in chief act responsibly ordering him there?

There is no reserve for judgment, unless you believe that you can have justification for mass murder. This is nothing more than an attempt to try a court case by public opinion, it is anti constitutional.

I really feel bad for this soldier. How many tours. Most probably honor bound to do his best, most probably while during his tours in Iraq, under some extremely tough assignments. To have it come to such an abrupt end as this.

If you knew John Henry Browne, you would immediately know this case is not going to be as easy as the prosecution may have initially thought. You can bet the prosecution had an, “Oh, shit” moment when they learned Browne might be part of the defense team.

Hey you two ... now c’mon girls, as you were ....

You’re BOTH pretty!

Did someone here say that this decorated, 4 combat tour trooper should be stood before a firing squad, at this time, without an investigation? or even a trial?

And then this same ... insect has the unmitigated temerity to use as a tagline,
“God protect our soldiers” or words to that effect.

Absoflukinglutely incredible. I’ve seen it all today.

Browne already stated the case will be more political than criminal.

All he can do is admit his guy did it and try to put Army and US policy on trail.

Should be interesting. The Army has a fine line to walk with the way they handle this.

Like who was planted the IEDs blowing troops legs off.

What if this “family” was Al-Qaeda, monitoring the base, gathering intelligence, and killing our men.

You never know.

Just sayin’.

an American version of Breaker Morant.

the rot starts at the top. f'd up ROE, F'd up PC generals and rump lickers in the Armed Forces and the guy snapped. 4 tours in FAO not as a JAG officer like Biden's boy or shot in the ass by rice like John F'n Kerry (did you know he was in Vietnam) but a man that saw somebody he loved mangled and then just decompensated.

If he murdered those people then it's on him. I feel sorry for his wife and kid. I feel sorry for his mom and dad that saw their son destroyed and I feel bad for his troops.

As far as I'm concerned there isn't one single muzzie worth any men that were in my squad, platoon or company. If the earth opened up and swallowed that entire area, the world would be better off.

Of course that's just my opinion and I could be wrong. This multiple deployment, the gays in military, the f'd up ROE are all designed to destroy the morale and integrity of the armed forces. I've notice the reserve Army women I've seen (Central Texas) are usually fat, out of shape, whining, and barely up to snuff as far as being squared away. Lots of "anxiety" attacks, back pain, carpal tunnel and bullsh#t complaints. It's turning into one big government job program.

This poor guy and all the others that are being ground up and spit out by our beloved government are just pawns in a huge political game.

My son will NEVER join the armed forces. Unless someone invades Texas I've told him to just pursue other options or careers. I can't wait for the first SEAL/Force REcon/Ranger fag suit for discrimination and quotas for certain preferred groups into the special operator units.

It's coming, it has to. Cause when would we have ever in our wildest dreams, EVER seen this on a United States Marine Corps base...

Just imagine trying to explain to your kid or your wife having to explain to their kid about these two perverts acting like high school sweet hearts when all they want is to pack mud and play lollipop. I'm glad I'm out, I'd of kicked their asses. I know that we had homosexuals but to do this in front of kids is disgusting and just what the administration wants in order to turn the entire armed forces into a PC armed camp. They'll be just like the Nazis. They have no honor, no ethics and no moral bearings.... they are just agents of the state that allow them to pursue they're nihilistic life and poor impulse control. The purge of the Christians in the military has started. Bookmark this and come back to me in 4 years when the last chaplain is now a wick-an.

... and the guy finally realizes that 9/11 was more than 10 years ago, it's March of 2012, and whenever he gets finished with his 17th tour in Afghanistan in 2026 he's going to come home to find that all his prospective job opportunities are either in China or are filled by Mexicans in the U.S.

Yeah, I think I would have gone bananas, too. In fact, this guy should be commended for having so much self-control before this incident.

Very interesting. "Previously undisclosed" and all that sh!t.

With every revelation like this, the odds grow stronger that this staff sergeant accused of killing thos civilians is not only going to escape any serious punishment, but is going to have a boatload of medals pinned on him.

It's a harsh lesson for patriotic conservatives to learn, especially on a website where most posters have been ardent supporters of the U.S. military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan ... but never, ever trust your government -- and that includes its military leadership, too.

Your post is quite the reality check. Anyone willing to give obama another four years because they don’t like whoever our nominee turns out to be, needs to read this. We cannot allow him to complete this destruction of our beloved country. His first term is Exhibit A. And “we ain’t seen nothin’ yet”.

If he would have changed his name, turned muzzie and waited till getting back to Ft Lewis to have his ‘moment’, he would at least be given a (somewhat) fair shake, not the argument of the day “Hang him High!...NO Higher!” etc.

I am glad his ‘rage/frustration’ hit before he got back to his family. THAT would have been a tragedy.

Now the left has another ‘Poster Boy’ and will also give ammo to those that want to disarm Marines because some Pol wants to take up your time with foolishness.

I'm never voting for Romney.

The military as far as I'm concerned is done. That one photo is the equivalent of the Mount Surabachi photo for Marines.

Show that photo to one thousand 15,16,17 year old boys and tell them that they get to be part of THAT. Who was the CO that allowed that crap to occur. It was STAGED. gay activists waited and wanted the women and KID in the background in order to make it normal appearing. Yeah, I'd be so f'ing proud to have that POS in my unit. It would reflect on me and all the men that served and died in this little pervert's unit. I'm honestly glad my father has passed away in order for him not to see what his beloved Corps has become.

It truly is heartbreaking what’s happening. My dad is a WWII purple heart recipient. He passed away last year. Glad he’s not here to see those photos. I’m afraid you’re right. Things are probably too far gone to ever go back. I’m sad for my grandchildren that they will never know the America that was.

Obama is keeping our troops there until after our election, so it doesn’t go completely to pieces before the election...then will pull out and let the bad guys (or worse guys—Karzai isn’t exactly a “good guy”) have the country. So our troops are getting killed there to minimize the political fallout for Obama for his failed policy in Afghanistan.

FOUR tours of duty in combat - three in Iraq - two injuries with his foot half blown off. And he gets a Fourth tour in Afganistan? That’s INSANE. Even when were were fighting a global war for our survival against Germany and Japan they had something called “rotation.” This poor guy served in battle nearly as long as the second world war (maybe longer - I haven’t looked into the exact figures)

This is a GROSS miscarriage of command. The officer in charge of his Fourth combat tour - when he thought he was finally going home - should be the one arraigned. But as usual they’ll only screw the troop.

As for the whispering campaign about drinking and marital problems, if you had four combat tours in a row, you’d probably have drinking and marital problems, too.

This soldier had already served three deployments in Iraq and had been wounded several times, including a traumatic brain injury when the vehicle he was riding in was blown up and losing part of his foot in another incident.

The man and his family had been told that he would not be asked to return to the M.E. due to his injuries.

So anyone with injuries gets the pass to go get drunk and shoot up two towns and kill a bunch of people who were not combatants?

Sorry, that is firing squad time. He should have had the rampage in front of the soldiers, not the innocents. He was also mindful of what he did trying to sneak back into his camp.

Even in our greatest generation of WW2 we had 50 plus rapes by Americans during our occupation and they to had to suffer the due consequences.
This one though enraged the Islamic world which is a bunch of rabid moon god worshiping bunch of fruit cakes.

It’s too bad for the families of all he killed, our military and for his own family.

No, it’s not a pass to commit mayhem, but it is a defense of mental incompetence. This man should not have been in the theater of war. He had already suffered too much and his mental competence should have been questioned. If this man is guilty, his superiors who sent him there, should be considered more guilty, including Obama.
