BBC News ^ | February 15, 1989

Soviet troops are withdrawing from Afghanistan, nine years after they swept into the country.

A convoy of Soviet armoured vehicles travelled the 260-mile (418km) journey to the USSR border while other soldiers left aboard an Ilyushin 76 transport aircraft.

Earlier, the Soviet government had announced the departure of the last troops although snow had delayed a five-day airlift from the Afghan capital Kabul.

The journey is especially dangerous on the Salang Pass through the Hindu Kush Mountains, where more than 10,000 mujahideen operate.

The mujahideen - Afghan Islamic fighters - have been involved in heavy battles to try to force a Soviet retreat.

When will this moment happen to US troops? I hate to say it, but the Taliban has won the current war.

i remember seeing video of the Mujaheddin shooting at a convoy of helicopter hulks going out of the country and the reporter asking him why they were shooting at them since they were leaving, the guy told them...

I want them to leave with the sound of bullets in their ears so they never think of returning.

Soon. Too soon. There is a good movie of one of the last Russian troops left behind.

During the Soviet occupation about a million Afghans lost their lives as the Red Army tried to impose control and millions more fled abroad as refugees. Soviet deaths were estimated to be around 15,000.

The harrowing and relentless military drama 9th Company, set between 1988 and 1989 at the tail end of the U.S.S.R. Afghani war (the Soviet equivalent of Vietnam).

This was never a "war".
Well maybe it was for the first few months, but it quickly morphed into a liberation, democratization, nation building exercise in a country whoes religion and culture are totally at odds with all our well-intentioned objectives.

I used to think the sole survivor was lucky to have made it.

Now i know that it was an age old practice to leave a survivor to spread the tale of the disaster.

If they had tajen refuge instead of running, most of them would have survived.

“Blair’s real concern was that there would be quote unquote ‘a knee-jerk reaction’ by the Americans … they would go thundering off and nuke the shit out of the place without thinking straight,”

Could go back into history all the to Alexander the Great——Afghan was his stopping point also.....

The people there, the inhabitents dont dare really switch sides, as they know sooner or later the occupiers leave and they will have to answer for their friendship.

Is that how Americans are going to comfort ourselves with the delusion that we "didn't really lose" over there?

Let's face it ... that whole thing was a disaster from Day One. If it hadn't been a disaster in September 2001, we wouldn't be sitting here scratching our heads in March 2012 trying to figure out what the hell happened.

Should have left the day after we popped Osama. There’s no reason American boots need to be in that hell hole today.

The original move by the Bush Administration was correct, we worked with the Northern Alliance with a bunch of special forces. We should never had ramped up the number of American troops in Afghanistan over 100,000. After the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, all American troops should had went home immediately, except for drones and a handful of concealed special forces.

They say no one has conquered Afghanistan.

Everyone has conquered Afghanistan, nobody has wanted to keep it!

It's getting worse. They are turning the military into a version of the Peace Corps.:

US Soldiers and Marines Learning How To Farm

US military are being educated in how to farm so they can teach farming skills to Afghanis to boost Afghanistan's economic stability.

There is no comfort or peace for Americans. We have lost both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When the Afghan leader bad mouths Obama & the USA, he has jumped the shark because he knows the Americans have been defeated. He, and....many other Afghans know they better get onboard with the winning Taliban, or their lives are not worth a plug nickel.

It breaks my heart that so much American blood and treasure have been wasted for nothing!!! And.....in my heart of hearts, I know that this outcome is just want Obama ordered and has sought after from day one of his Presidency. And....now the icing on the cake is not far behind. Iran will soon have a nuclear bomb(s) and the military means to deliver it to both Israel and the USA!!!

We Americans have no reason to complain, we got exactly what we voted for, a hateful, evil man, Barack Hussein Obama, and his anti-American followers, determined to bring this great nation to its knees, in multiple fashion!!! We will not pay the dearest price, our children will!!! In 2008, America eagerly voted for it’s own destruction, willingly and with much fanfare, glee, and Obama style hope and change, so to speak!!!

At the end of 1944, the Japanese people marched and cheered in the streets of Tokyo and throughout all of Japan at the great defeat of the American fleet in the Leyte Gulf, as told to them by their leaders. Fact is, it was the other way around, in reality. The Americans had wiped out the Japanese attack fleet and aircraft carriers with massive, effective use of their air & sea power. In fact, about eight months later, the major cities in Japan had been burnt to the ground, and two of them, Hiroshima & Nagasaki had been turned into glass by USA atomic bombs!!! America, beware!!! Under Obama and company, we are all is harm’s way!!! Yes, folks, dommsday can occur right here in the good old USA!!! You only have to look in the mirror to see who is really to blame.....answer, yourselves!!!

Afghanistan is like a bad skip in a record album. After repeating a few dozen times it’s best to toss it into the ocean. I do not want to think about the purges that will happen when we leave. Too many have died already.
Bless them for such sacrifice.
