Some employers and college are asking to see applicants' Facebook pages from job applicants and student athletes, according to a report on Tuesday.
MSNBC's Red Tape Chronicles blog said job applicants at the Maryland Department of Corrections have been asked to log into their accounts so that interviewers could see their wall posts, friends, photos and anything else they may have behind the social network's privacy wall...
...Facebook spokesperson Frederic Wolens said many such school and employer policies appear to violate the site's terms.

That would be the end of any interest I might have in an employer, a school, or whatever, the conversation would be over.
Pretty funny. I have two facebook accounts. One is squeaky clean.
Actually I have a third, but it is a fake name. It is a person that is virtual only...
No kidding. Do they also ask for the keys to your home so that they can listen to your phone messages, and read your mail?
So, if your profile picture isn't a picture of you......you can simply say "sorry, I don't have a FB account." That is, IF you want to be so kind. I am not sure I could be.
Not a bonafied occupational requirement.
Means they can’t ask that question, anymore than they can ask age or religion.
If you tell them you don’t use social media of any type and only use the WWW for surfing or emailing, are you instantly disqualified since they can’t check your facebook/myspace/twitter account? I use none of these nor do I text. Does that make you a suspicious character not to be trusted? Just because you don’t want to share what your dog barfed up this morning or what brand of milk you bought with every troll out there? I see folks so engrossed in their tweeting or texting or facebooking just walking along oblivious to what’s going on around them. Makes for easy targets. Just sayin’.
I wonder if Obama’s spies are in any way involved, or if this is just a really stupid idea that the schools & employers thought up by themselves.
On another subject, I could not delete emails from my Outlook this morning and the first thing I thought was that the admiistration hadn’t finished downloading my emails to their enemies database.
Suddenly the delete began working. Very strange.
No one needs any job (or academic program) that badly. Sounds like they are looking for evidence of evil, anti-progressive sympathies.
I asked this question on the previous thread: is it possible to create a FB account for the sole purpose of giving the middle finger to requests such as this? I don’t have a FB account.
Well I guess that makes it VERY wrong then, can't have the Zuckermann getting angry now.
College students, employees ask for College president`s and CEO`s Facebook passwords
... nor a MySpace account. Nor do I text, twitter, or tweet ...
... or make any other bird noises ...
It appears your thoughts on social networking are about like mine.
Serious waste of time. Just the idea of twitter not to mention the name itself, makes me want to hurl. Texting the same. My thoughts on texting! A nice method of locating a lost soul in a blizzard when the battery won’t sustain voice.
I also have three. One is the real me (in your face and NOT pc). Another is for work (yes, I’m required to have it for an additional duty I have). The third is a virtual person (friends with my daughter to keep tabs on her).
Do as Nancy Reagan says and just say no.
Was this the other thread you mentioned? Just curious what the other thread about facebook title was.

This falls under the “If you have nothing to hide, there is nothing to worry about citizen.
I don’t have one either. This reminds me of my late mother’s stern warning that she mentioned more times than I can remember: Don’t ever write anything that you would be ashamed if it became public.
In the computer age - it should include pictures as well.
From what little I’ve seen on some folk’s facebook pages (most certainly NOT from my machine...I’ll not be infected by such blather)...I’d not even think of hiring the vast majority of those who choose to be enrolled.
>Am I the only FReeper that doesn’t have a Facebook account?
No. I cancelled mine after a few days - it took that long to see what it was all about.
No.
Not surprising in a country where people urinate on command for a job.
Nope, I don’t do the FB thing either. Years ago I had an account with the other place (Myspace), just to see what the hubub was about, but I’ve never used it for anything. Used a throwaway email and a fake name even then.
I really don’t get the notion of putting so much personal info out there on the net.
I would think you would have some 'splaing to do, and probably be classifed as being somewhat anti-social no matter what you said.

I use this free service because some US and other sites are blocked in Thailand and it hides IP addresses, but I notice they also have throwaway email accounts. All you need to open a Facebook account is a valid email address.
Is anyone seriously surprised by this? For the average user the internet has never been private.
I would tell them that I would give you my password and user name as soon as they gave me their’s.
These SOB’s think they own you just because your applying for a job or working for them. They’re NUTS.
—Then, the agency arranges to send an attractive undercover female (or as the case would be male) agent to “chat you up” at the bar over a couple of drinks, or in the park on a nice sunny day, with a view towards establishing your true character and personal habits. Works like a charm.—
Yeah. I saw “The Firm” too. :)
Actually, I was just vetted by the FDIC last year...
BTW, the reason that particular avenue would not work for me is that I have no “favorite haunts”. And the places I do go to occasionally, I go to with my wife. Bike riding, playing at bluegrass jams at the local music store with a bunch of guys where the youngest is in his 50’s. And working on our property are my haunts. An undercover female would be, uh, awkward. And if she were alluring it would be downright laughable.
Think Marilyn Monroe in a slinky red dress showing up at the local grain elevator to “talk up” the farmers having coffee drinking “man time” and you get the picture. :-)
Come to think of it, in the last few years I’ve had a few women try to pick up on me at gigs my bands were playing. I’m too enamored with my wife to be susceptible, though I was slightly flattered. It is, frankly, embarrassing.
You see, here’s the deal with Facebook. It’s quick and easy. There is a problem with quick and easy however. It’s not secure. That is why our secrets have been stolen by the Chinese, hackers and such.
We assume there is privacy? Let me phrase this differently. Suppose you take your personal diary and leave it at a Starbucks. You would rightly assume that your deepest personal thoughts have been compromised. When you put your secrets on someone’s file server in who knows what country or soon to be a ship at sea why should you expect any difference.
You are truly stupid if you expect confidentiality in the Ether.
No, you’re not.
I think this goes too far. Way too far.
—LOL! I sense an accelerated security clearance update in your immediate future.—
Naw. The contract fell through. They personally visited my neighbors, my friends, people I went to high school with (and I was 57 at the time). It was nuts. Then I get my clearance, password, secret hand shake. All that stuff.
And the subcontractor that hired me lost the contract for my skill set. I’m actually glad it happened. I’m really done with jobs that require me to be away from home so much.
Who would believe that???
What's there to be stuck on? It's a pretty self explanatory statement, yes?
Who would believe that???
I couldn't care less who believes it....it happens to be true. I don't have HBO either.
—I got mine after the men in black came through the neighborhood and terrified all of our neighbors, asking questions about me.—
I...don’t...remember... There was this flash and then...
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.
I try to hide my true "lonely stalker" character when meeting an attractive woman. The last thing I want is for her to see my true character if I think I have a chance with her. :-) And as for "favorite haunts" I would be very surprised to see her just plop down on my couch with some nachos and a beer.
Do you regularly cheat on your taxes? Would you like a higher level job in the Department of Treasury... maybe even the Secretary?
“......I know of a certain agency of the U.S. government that uses a highly effective technique in vetting prospective employees. Better than snooping into someone’s decoy Facebook account. Seemingly idle warm up chat leading to the interview elicits your responses to such things as your favorite haunts (restaurants, bars, etc.). Then, the agency arranges to send an attractive undercover female (or as the case would be male) agent to “chat you up” at the bar over a couple of drinks, or in the park on a nice sunny day, with a view towards establishing your true character and personal habits. Works like a charm.

Wow, most of the US Govt Agencies I’m familiar with are MAINLY interested in your gender, race, ethnicity and whether you’re a member of a “protected class”. “True character” would be an after thought at best—probably right down as a low priority along with actual competency.
I don’t trust Facebook. I reluctantly started a page with a pseudonym 2 years ago just so I could visit and post on Mark Levin’s FB page. I don’t have any friends or belong to any groups. And that’s the way I like it!
All three are allowed due to the fact they are from different sources. :)
