Campaigning at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. yesterday, Mitt Romney quickly criticized a student for wanting "free stuff" from the government.
"You're all for like 'yay freedom and all this stuff and yay pursuit of happiness,'" said the college-aged girl. "You know what would make me happy? Free birth control."
"Let me tell you something, if you're looking for free stuff that you don't have to pay for, vote for the other guy," Romney told the student. "That's what he's all about."
Romney continued, "Politicians get up and promise you all kinds of free stuff, more and more stuff that you won't have to pay for and you know what? We get elected that way, in many cases, politicians do, that's not something I subscribe to.
Romney insisted on telling the truth to voters and "demand sacrifices" from people.
"The idea that of borrowing a trillion dollars more than we bring in is not just bad economics, its immoral," Romney said to the crowd.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, I'm not so sure that this statement is seen as a negative against Obama....
Next thing you know, Mitt, they’ll be wanting free health care.
In my day it was the guy’s responsibility to bring birth control. What’s with all these chicks wanting it for free, not worth a buck or so to a guy?
He should have told her to get a job & pay for it herself.
lol... I see what you did there.
Should have told her to move to Mass. and get a job at a Catholic hospital. He fixed it there. Gees, he’s not even president yet.
For those that listen to Romney it’s nothing new. I tend to listen to all the speeches on primary night. Romney’s talks are all conservative and anti-Obama.
If you think he’s just a liar that’s cool, but he gives a good speech.
BTW, he should add that it’s not “free” anyway.
Just like Mitt. Wait till to see if the issue is a winner and then join the battle. Let Rush do the heavy lifting, while distancing your self from him and then take credit when the work is done, that’s leadership, that’s Mitt.
He should have started off:
‘Look, you dumb slut...’
Shouldn’t somebody pay for the dinner and drinks to get her in the sack too?
Pray for America
In my day "responsibility" meant bringing the girl a engagement ring and a marriage vow.
He missed a truly unique opportunity to show exactly what this is about, and missed it. Proper answer would have been along the lines of:
“There is no such thing a “free” goods, or services. Someone has to pay for them. If you are receiving them from the government, then they are being paid for by taxes paid by other people; since the government doesn’t create wealth, it only redistributes.
A lot of Americans do no want to pay for your contraception and would have to be forced to do so at the point of a gun to do so, otherwise.
So, what you are really asking for is the “right” to force someone, against their will, to pay for something you want. The same argument can be made for tax payer funded abortion, as well as a whole host of liberal social entitlement policies.
That is the definition of slavery...you support slavery in a very real and true sense, how very progressive of you.”
It's like deja vu, all over again!
Imho, Romney is a calculating sob. He is the one who ridiculed and evaded Stephanopolous’ birth control question, and he’s never looked back on the issue. Santorum got himself tarred with it, however unfairly.
I don’t think Obama underestimates Romney, I’m sure they view R as a cold hearted operator.
She should just put a Mason jar beside her bed for ‘tips’.
I think she captures Jefferson's sentiments exactly. /s
Not this Conservative. This guy has no moral compass. If this were a room full of Rats in the General election, he would have agreed with this broad. Political expediency is Milts middle name. He has a terrible track record of coming down on the right side of an issue and sticking with it.
I say the girl was Romney plant sent there specifically to lob a softball he could hit out of the park for the benefit of those hillbillies in the Tea Party.
Good post, that was my first thought as well.
Instead, he loses a chance to educate an 0bot and others in the audience that nothing is “free” from the government.
“Proper answer would have been along the lines of”
You should watch the entire video...
The only obvious conclusion to take from this story is that the entrance standards for Bradley University are so incredibly low that their students aren’t even required to demonstrate the ability to form a simple sentence in their primary language.
No wonder she wants birth control. Even she’s afraid she might reproduce.
I love the answer Romney gave.
I recall the “as your children” question that Bush 41 was asked. Rush said the answer should have been “I not your father”.
In my experience, most sheeperals really cringe, as if physically struck,
when you point out that anything the demand government “give” is taken by force from someone else.
To drive the point home - “yes, you advocate and authorize sticking a gun in someone else’s face in order to provide what you call ‘free’”.
As TPig said - how very progressive of you.
Wilderness indeed if you think that will win over Conservatives.
What track? Do you mean where he lies and hopes nobody checks what he says?
Romneycare (which is the prototype for Obamacare) offers FREE ABORTIONS.
That shows that Mitt doesn’t really understand conservatism.
Conservatism is hard, it has to be taught.
Liberalism is easy, it’s simply felt.
A good speech is telling America that sacrificing means the Government won't give you freebies?
That is what he just said in that video.
We want free sex
Mitt’s not my first choice by a long shot but short of a miracle at the convention it looks like he will end up with the nomination. If conservatives stay home in November like I almost did in 2008 then we’re indeed phuked.
on demand too
Err, I don't think he was talking about the girls you wanted to marry ;)
If that is true, then Romney can't even handle his own set up question because blew it.
Agree. What he said was a good start, but he needed to clearly explain the fallacy of the “free lunch” mentality.
I remember that question as well.
My answer would have been: “Sir, if you see government as a parental figure, please do not vote....ever”.
I read the transcript. Romney’s answer was a good answer; just not the “right” one in my opinion. And that is his problem, as far as I am concerned. When given a chance to drive a point home in a forceful manner, we chooses to couch his answer in a more acceptable politico speak. That may endear him to the GOP ruling class and mushy middle. It does nothing for people who really passionate about the path our country is on, though.
That’s my opinion, your mileage may vary.
Funny, I posted no such assertion to you, in fact your response makes no sense at all.
I simply stated that if you thought this response from him was going to win over Conservatives you were wrong.
Why so defensive?
Declarative, not defensive.
Responsibility requires making decisions based on something higher than fleshly urges. It is no small matter to joke about the evil of fornication when fornication is destroying the land. The fact that these women desire to frequently fornicate and have it subsidized is doubly troubling. Both are destructive and morally repugnant. Men have been duped into acting as sexual predators not gentlemen who protect a woman's honor and chastity; while women have been brainwashed in to believing that sex has no consequences other than the leverage over men that it provides. Fornication destroys culture and it is toxic to marriage.
We will never balance the budget or maximize liberty, so long as we are flaunting our immorality and hatred of the God of morality. America was great before we screwed our neighbor, screwed his daughter and screwed the whole blessings of providence up. Get married and have all sex you can stand and then stay married. Teach it to your children and resist the propaganda that is designed to enslave and destroy.
Bishop Romney could give the most conservative speech ever uttered by a human and I’d still never vote for him. The man is a fake everything.
There you are.
How did someone that can't put together a proper sentence get into college in the first place?!
The fact of the matter is that not everyone sees it the way you and I do.
I agree with you because of wisdom gained through age. When I was a youngin with hormones raging and plenty of available escapades, well, it is what it is.
My comment was true, there will always be “those” girls and plenty of men to take advantage of them.
It's a fact of life since the beginning.
This isn't the first time Man has fallen, it won't be the last. The difference is, this time the Government and the libs think others should be forced to pay for it.
Insightful. ‘nuf said.
