Survey: Rick Santorum Has Sizable Lead Over Mitt Romney Heading Into Saturday's La. Primary March 20, 2012

Jonathan Tilove

WASHINGTON -- Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has a significant lead over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in Louisiana heading into Saturday's primary, according to a survey conducted Monday by a Republican polling firm.

According to the survey of 2,018 likely Republican voters conducted by Magellan Strategies BR, and not paid for by any campaign or political organization, Santorum was leading Romney by 13 points -- 37 percent to 24 percent, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, right behind Romney with 24 percent.

(snip)

According to the survey, if Gingrich were not in the race, 61 percent of his support would go to Santorum, and only 22 percent to Romney. In a one-on-one contest, Santorum would defeat Romney by 21 points -- 55 to 34 percent with 11 percent undecided.

If Ricky were running for Jeff Davis’ job, this’d be great news! Unfortunately, he’s running for Barack Obama’s position!

I am just glad that Romney is below 50 percent tonight. Also only 600K out of 12 million voted in Illinois? That is the big problem that needs addressed.

It's a 3-man race in LA now and some of Santorum's support could shift to either/both Romney and Gingrich.

Nothing suppresses a vote more than then belief of loss.

Rick Santorum usually wins in the conservative states; Romney wins in the liberal states.

Why is that? LOL

Have you noticed Romney trails by double-digits every week before every primary and in most cases comes away with a double-digit win? Say what you want (and I am no fan), but that is a talent. Santorum has proven he cannot close the deal. Santorum ought to drop out and stop taking votes away from Gingrich.

It doesn’t matter much, because Louisiana has so few delegates, and they are all “unbound” to the convention, but to the degree you trust the selection of delegates, the goal in Louisiana is to keep ROmney below 25%, which is the cutoff for proportional assignment.

So in this case, we want Gingrich to stay in the race, and to take a few percent from Romney.

What isn’t helpful is Gingrich taking votes from Santorum, if it helps Romney get over 25%. If Romney ends up below 25%, conservatives win.

Face it, the low Illinois turnout is now showing a “none of the above” attitude of GOP voters. In a time that the worse White House resident in US history should be defeated in a record landslide, the establishment GOP has systematically undermined every conservative candidate while offering a lackluster Massachusetts liberal as their anointed one.

At this point, any shift from Santorum would be to Romney as the perceived winner. Those shifting would not go to someone who is polling even lower and is behind nationally. Otherwise, they would not shift at all.

ROFL - Santorum should drop out so that the one running even further behind Romney can lose instead? If Santorum would drop out now, Romney would sew up the nomination in no time. If Santorum’s supporters went 60-40 to Newt as Gingrich’s poll shows they would in the reverse situation, Romney would be over 50%

He fire bombs his enemies Namely the GOP base with ugly AstroTurf and literally drives off the base from voting period .
This clown has killed off the GOP base and the general is going to be a disaster for the GOP elites in DC .
These clowns may actually lose the house thanks to the ugliest pres primary in everyone’s lifetime .
Mitten’s had the lowest approval rating of any Pres front runner in modern times.

Here’s what’s going on in the Romney-win state:

“Illinois abandons gun rights, empowers criminals

Plan on purchasing, owning, transporting and/or operating a firearm in your lifetime? Do not relocate to the state of Illinois. The state has one of the worst gun laws in the country and the Illinois Police and the Illinois Attorney General really need to stop pursuing innocent gun owners, sellers, and users, and pursue those who actually commit crimes that injure or harm others.

Stemming from a public safety initiative, Illinois implemented a law in 1968 that says a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card must be issued by the Illinois State Police before a resident can possess or purchase firearms or ammunition. Whether this initiative has been successful in providing safety to the public is a story where the evidence in support of such an act leaves much to be desired.”

According to the poll, without Gingrich in the race, Santorum's lead skyrockets to 21 points.

It's fine that Santorum has a big lead in Louisiana, but Romney isn't campaigning there. Santorum and Gingrich are contesting LA. If Gingrich does take a drubbing there and still refuses to pull out, it will just prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that his is just a vanity campaign.

If the current numbers hold, there’s a chance that Rick Santorum gets all 20 delegates on Saturday. To qualify for delegates in Saturday’s primary, a candidate must get 25% of the vote. With both Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney below 25%, only Rick Santorum would receive delegates. If the 6% undecideds split evenly, all three will be over 25% and the delegate split is likely to be Santorum 8, Gingrich 6, and Romney 6. If Gingrich got out the race, the split would likely be Santorum 13 and Romney 7. If we are truly at the point where every delegate counts, then the extra delegate for Mitt Romney is probably more important than the increased margin for Rick Santorum. I’m sure that the Gingrich and Santorum campaigns are hoping that the final numbers are something like Santorum 40, Gingrich 27, and Romney 24. That ending would keep Mr. Romney from receiving any delegates. In this primary, Dr. Gingrich’s presence in the race certainly has the chance of taking delegates from Mitt Romney.
