Top Romney adviser: Mitt will erase his conservative positions once hes the nominee

Think Progress flags an amazing exchange on CNN, in which Eric Fehrnstrom, a top adviser to Mitt Romney, seems to confirm that the conservative positions Romney has been forced to take during the primary won’t be a big deal because he can simply erase them once he becomes the GOP nominee:

HOST: Is there a concern that Santorum and Gingrich might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?

FEHRNSTROM: Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all over again.

There you have it. Dems, predictably, are pouncing on the remark, arguing that it validates their message that Romney has no core and will say or do anything to get elected.

Pretty much every election both Republicans and Democrats run to the edges during the primary and return toward the middle to pick up General Election moderates. Is this really shocking to anyone?

Which conservative positions are those, exactly?

This man, and those around him, meet the very definition of “hollow men.”

Romney's move to the middle will put him somewhere between Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Well of course. And yet some “conservatives” persist in the “anyone but Obama” idiocy.

Yeah, just vote Obama into the GOP and you think it’s bad now? Conservatism is D O N E if Romney is nominated and elected. Done.

And they would have a point, wouldn't they?

Their message? That’s EXACTLY what we’ve been saying! He will say ANYTHING to get elected!

Gee, do you mean the positions Romney took during the campaign were all phony and he never believed in any of them? I'm shocked. I never would have expected this in a million years.

Other than Ann Coulter I can't think of anyone who is surprised by this.

Nixon’s advice was to run back to the center once you get the nomination, not run to the left of your opponent..........

What’s sad is that a lot of Freepers even after reading this will still vote for Mitt if he gets the nomination, and rationalize it by thinking anything is better than Obama.

Ronald Reagan? You mean the Real Deal and greatest conservative President since Calvin Coolidge? He ran straight up because he had all the bonafides to do so.

In case you hadn’t noticed, our current crop of candidates suck, one in all, and NONE could carry Reagan’s jockstrap. That’s what we’re dealing with, not the 2 exceptions of the 20th century.
