Obama’s Outrageous DOL Rules Will Restrict Minors From Working on Family Farms – Killing Farm Life
gateway ^ | March 21, 2012, | Jim Hoft

Posted on 03/21/2012 9:40:19 PM PDT by george76

Barack Obama is committed to killing off the family farm – an American tradition.

For generations children and adults have worked together on the family farm. Those days are over.

Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today introduced the Preserving America’s Family Farm Act, to prevent the Department of Labor (DOL) from enacting its controversial proposed restrictions that would ban children from working on family farms.

Senator Thune spoke out against the Obama Administration’s proposed labor rules for youth who work on farms and ranches on the Senate floor.

The Obama Administration’s rules are so strict they would restrict minors from handling most animals and even from using battery-powered screwdrivers.

Honestly I expected this a long time ago. I remember as a kid an inspector telling my father that “Kids shouldn’t be working around this large equipment”.

More laws real people will ignore.

Everyone will just be a lawbreaker, and we’ll all care less about the rule of law.

Grandkids still get paid to do chores in our family, but it is mainly because I can spend time doing other things which pay much better. I'm a firm believer in being able to mow your own lawn (much easier with the motorized mowers vs. the old reel types), skin your own dinner (and cook it, too), and when the sad occasion arises, shoot your own dog.

The thing I hated worst was being the 'big kid' who got to catch and secure sheep for my great uncle to shear. Haying was dirty work, but not near so bad, and I didn't mind it, nor planting/cultivating/cutting/spearing/hanging/stripping tobacco. Crabbing, (trot line and crab pots), digging clams, fishing, tonging oysters, hunting deer and waterfowl were just putting food on the table.

I wish I could give my grandkids the same opportunities I had as a kid, but my childhood was long ago and far away.

I read on another thread some time ago to start by eliminating the departments and cabinets that have an “E” in them. Energy, education, environment, endowment and so on. Sounds good to me. Freegards,

Never had to shoot my own dog. Thankfully.

Haying was hard work, but it paid well. I think that I remember logging with my uncle more fondly than it actually was. He had a great stand of hardwood on his farm and we'd put up all of the family's firewood. Would take a weekend in the winter to fell it, limb it, and twitch it out, and a couple of weekends in the late summer (you know, the time between "haying" and "getting the last of the harvest in" to cut split deliver and stack.

But I think that I'd still give my left arm to have one more weekend cutting and splitting, and listening to his stories.

The farm is still in the family, but it isn't worked too hard anymore. The land is rented out, someone else does the haying. They do raise some blueberries on it, though, and home grown firewood is still the cheapest heat in town. I make sure my kids get up there every summer, and I suspect that when they get bigger, they'll learn how to swing a splitting maul and use a two man buck.

If the turkey in the WH and his administration are not voted out in November I fear we won’t survive another four years as a Constitutional Republic. Patriots are barely holding on to it now and it’s something that has got to addressed.

Susan B. Anthony’s (and her friends’) problem with “child labor” was that the young folks were instrumental in keeping family wealth and increasing family prosperity in those days—even after divorce (father custody). ...kept local bureaucrats from using a bored family member to take everything away from the family.

But now local politicians, appointees and employees can steal a farm or ranch on nothing more than false accusations from busybodies in developments (e.g., animal protection laws including agriculture, HOA queens wanting more taxes and services, etc.). Have fun. Enjoy the slide.

BTW, there’s a bill in the CO legislature for reorganizing part of the State’s HHS (CO DHS) services regarding kids. It’s a UN-related thing. If it passes, the State will monitor much more about children and their households.

IMO, the only correction in sight is the default process to force smaller government, but there will be a whole lot of pain for the next tiers of middle class families cut from the ever more exclusive economy (debt regime radically shrinking sooner or later).

Who knew that I was once a criminal? I pulled tarps from a catching frame when I was 11 and 12 in the orchards of northern California. When I was 15, I started driving tractor and/or forklift every summer until I graduated from high school.

When Obama is done with America, we won't recognize it. Just damn.

Didn't think about that, but you're right. Same with the FFA (Future Farmers of America).

Speaking of that, one of my favorite things to do at county fairs is to visit the livestock exhibits. Just about all the hogs, goats, lambs, sheep, etc. were raised by kids -- often pre-teen kids. When they sell their livestock at the fair auction, they don't really make too much money for their efforts, but it instills in them a rock-solid work ethic.

It would be a real shame to see Obama put an end to that. I have no doubt that the Communist-in-Chief truly hates America. There can be no other explanation for his wholesale destruction.

Also puts a fork in the meme that these farm jobs are work Americans just WON’T do.

Liberals believe that rich people do not need help.

And those who are independent aren’t easily controlled.

If the federal government can regulate the relationship between parents and their children on their own family’s farm, there is virtually nothing off limits when it comes to government intrusion into our lives.

IMO, this will be shot down in Federal court. After all, why have your kids clean their rooms when you could hire a maid?

Not only an assault on food production. It is a way for the government to take more land from the people. Most family farms are in farm land or tree growth, and pay a lower tax rate. After a number of years the land is worth less than the taxes, so it cannot be sold and if the farm does not produce and is abandoned it immediately reverts to the government.

Obama’s Outrageous DOL Rules Will Restrict Minors From Working on Family Farms – Killing Farm Life As We Know It

He's either clearing away family farms to make way for collective farming, or he's forcing farmers to hire illegals and pull more Mexican Socialists into the country (so he can give them citizenship -- by decree if necessary), or .....both.

Force farms to hire illegals. Then confiscate them or regulate the private owners out of existence, and collectivize them using Mexican Communists for the labor force.

Something like that?

What else he is doing is grasping for money. Farmers are permitted to deduct the expense of farm help as a business expense from gross income. They are permitted to pay their children as farm help up to some limit...I forget what, but I’d not be surprised to find it up to 5 or 6 thousand.

If a guy has 3 kids, that’s 15 grand of expense that comes off the top of his gross. Multiply that times how many farm families across America.

In addition to other schemes, this is also probably a money grab.

People outside the urban environment are just country hicks that need to be marginalized as racist hang overs.

Unfortunately, it isn't just Communist urbanites that think stuff like this. Consider this offering, from a Jewish urbanite on the East Coast, discussing the opinion of neoconservatives and Jewish voters of people like Sarah Palin in particular, but all non-urbanites in Flyover Country generally. It's a real bigotry, one I'd never seen so trenchantly expressed before last night, and only hinted at by the series of jeremiads in The Weekly Standard, 20 years ago, by neocon authors against the influence of the Southern Republican conservatives, after the GOP House coup in 1994, which the neocons regarded with barely-disguised horror.
