Trayvon Martin case has been poorly handled, Santorum says

In remarks after President Obama made his first public comment on the matter, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum said Friday that the handling by Florida law enforcement of the Trayvon Martin case has been “horrible” and that the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law should not apply to the shooter, George Zimmerman.

“Well, ‘Stand Your Ground’ is not doing what this man did,” Santorum said Friday morning at a campaign event in Monroe, La. “There’s a difference between ‘Stand Your Ground’ and doing what he did. And it’s a horrible case. It’s chilling to hear what happened, and of course the fact that law enforcement didn’t immediately go after and prosecute this case is another chilling example of horrible decisions made by people in this process.”

Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain, has not been charged in the shooting.

And, FWIW, if Zimmerman's account is correct, that he was returning to his truck and was surprised and attacked, then there is no application of "stand your ground" at all. In order for "stand your ground" to apply, a person needs an opportunity to retreat from physical blows or other use of force; and chooses to stand his ground rather than retreat. Absent an opportunity to retreat, the question about whether or not there is a right to stand ground doesn't arise.

It wouldn't surprise me if Martin attacked Zimmerman for "dissing" and tried to inflict a beating he wouldn't forget, at the end of which Zimmerman pulled out his concealed weapon to avoid being pounded to death.

I don’t get it......an Hispanic guy shoots a Black guy, yet somehow some folks are acting like it’s the White Euro’s fault.

The way it works is that if a black guy kills a white guy, it's (majority white) society's fault for driving the black guy to crime. If a white guy kills a black guy, it's also (majority white) society's fault for engendering the racist climate that made him do it. Never mind that 90% of inter-racial crimes are committed by blacks against whites. Never mind that blacks commit over 50% of all crimes (including white collar crimes) despite being 12% of the population. It's always whitey's fault*.

* Note that I'm not suggesting that blacks are responsible for the actions of black criminals. What harshes my mellow is the tendency of blacks to defend the criminals among them, no matter how monstrous the crime, and to attack reasonable law enforcement measures like profiling as racist. While law-abiding blacks aren't responsible for the crimes of black law-breakers, they are responsible for making the rest of us less safe because of their constant whining about racism during the prosecution of black perps, who need to be either locked away for life or put to death.

Boy, Santorum really blew opening his mouth about some local issue in Florida.

Him interjecting anything here, would be really stupid.

If he said what I've heard, he's a vote whore.

This former Prosecutor agrees with Rick.

I bet Mike Nifong does too. He's also a "former prosecutor." I'd wait for the facts, myself.

That's where the evidence is pointing. Add in that Zimmerman was calling for help, and neighbors heard him. Nobody came to his assistance. i don;t know how long he claims to have "waited" for assistance, even a shouted out "STOP THAT!" from one or more people who live in the vicinity. He's justified in using deadly force even is he's not in fear of his life - what he has to apprehend is a threat of serious injury.

What fascinates me is that the media can be so reckless in fabricating a highly incendiary false narrative, and not hurt itself in the process.

This former Prosecutor agrees with Rick.

This citizen no longer has any faith in either you, your profession or Santorum who are willing to condemn a person solely on what you have read in the MSM........

At the VERY LEAST, you and Santorum could have deferred judgment until a complete and thorough investigation has been conducted........Instead, Santorum has succumbed to race pandering.

Sorry Rick, you're now toast in my book and I won't shed a tear when you get your butt kicked by an equally offensive Romney........

He did pursue the man in defiance of the police.

I don’t think he should be charged with anything, but he did do more than just stand his ground.

Seriously, you think the Post would just make up quotes when Santorum could easily prove he didn’t say it?

Wow.

Some Freepers take the media conspiracy thing a bit too far.

That name is probably why the media can hide it from their idiot viewers.

But if a “we need Hispanic voters” GOPE pol started speaking out for his rights it wouldn’t be so easy to hide it.

“On Tuesday the 20th it was announced there would be a Grand Jury on April 10th. What in the L do these people want? Is not the rule of law good enough?
Or do we need instant justice... “

For all the injustices they (as a people) once endured at the vengeance of lynch mobs, you would think blacks would have learned something, but they have learned nothing.

What too many blacks are -really- “calling for” with their cries of “justice!” appears to be little more than a lynching-in-reverse.

But, hey! It keeps the discrim-industry’s “race machine” hummin’ along...

Until all the facts are out, I think its premature to make statements like this. Zimmerman hasn’t been arrested so far for a reason. It also rubs me the wrong way how these politicians (who don’t have all the facts either) are all but calling for his head.

Well said.

I am reminded of the Duke Lacrosse team rape charges by the national media.

Let the police do their job and the local DA do his job and gather facts and information.

Perhaps, just perhaps they did gather the facts and did make a decision that will be reviewed by other law enforcement agencies. In either event, the rush to judge in the media seems a bit focused on furthering one's political view points.

If he said what I've heard, he's a vote whore.

Santorum remains my guy, but I think what we're seeing here is native reflex rather than vote whoring - it's the tendency of north easterners to see southern whites as a bunch of trigger-happy cowboys. I suspect that's his regional prejudice showing. It ain't pretty, but there it is...

Has Rick Santorum offered an opinion on this? Teen Set on Fire in Racial Attack; Media Silent. For that matter, what of the other Republican candidates? Anything at all about the TWO black thugs attacking ONE white child?

“This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve, white boy.” So spewed the attackers of Melissa Coon’s 13-year-old son, as they doused him with gasoline and set him alight. The attack on the boy took place on the east side of Kansas City, Missouri.

See my post #59. Is there now yet another incident, this time where the white child was only 11?
