Eating lots of chocolate helps people stay thin, study finds
CBS News ^ | March 27, 2012 | Ryan Jaslow

Posted on 03/27/2012 2:07:44 PM PDT by Innovative

The study found that people who frequently ate chocolate had a lower body mass index (BMI) than people who didn't.

The researchers found that the participants - who were an average age of 57 - ate chocolate for an average of twice of week and exercised roughly 3.5 times per week. But the more frequent chocolate-eaters had smaller BMIs, a ratio of height and weight that's used to measure obesity.

What explains the effect? Even though chocolate can be loaded with calories, it's full of antioxidants and other ingredients that may promote weight loss, the researchers said.

I like York Peppermint patties. Not so big on milk chocolate as it is very sweet. I also like hot fudge sundies made with butter pecan ice cream and cashews but then that would be fattening. lol!

It’s like learning to like beer.....you start out with the lighter kinds and work your way up.....we eat 85% Lindt Chocolate....at first it was “bitter”....it isn’t now. Whether it keeps you “thin” is, I believe, interesting. I wish I was thinner!

Or, it could be that perpetual dieters (those with weight to lose) don’t eat chocolate, and only the naturally slender do. How nice it would be not to have to obsess over everything one eats. I know it can be done. Our son-in-law is that way. He eats burgers, drinks milkshakes and regular sodas and stays slim and trim. The rest of us are eating salads and drinking diet soda trying to lose. *sigh*

They say dark chocolate, in moderation, can help prevent or minimise risk of heart disease - scientifically or figuratively, maybe in ‘matters of the heart’ as well. Some say dark chocolate (cocoa solids) can lower blood pressure too.

Besides, chocolate is supposed to be an aphrodisiac. Well, according to the movie “Chocolat” with Juliette Binoche...

There’s more to it than that.

A very very old pugilist’s trick...

if you need to drop a weight class, or if you are over your boxing weight, eat a hershey bar before every workout. It is like a drug that makes you burn more calories during physical exertion. Its like a milder version of cocaine.

There are a few substances that have some curious effects on people and animals. Theobromine, capsaicin, cocaine, caffeine, and ginseng.

Theobromine is highly addictive and highly pleasurable in dogs and causes them to have increased energy. It can cause them to have a heart attack if enough is eaten. You should not allow a dog to eat any of it. It is to a dog like snorting coke is to a human.

Capsaicin is a performance enhancement in horses and also causes them to feel no pain. It is not known if it is pleasurable to them...at least it is not known by me. It is actually illegal to give a horse capsaicin.

Both theobromine and capsaicin have similar but muted effects in humans as they do in dogs and horses. I’ve never tried it but I’m told if you add both theobromine and capsaicin to a hot tea or coffee drink it is a heluva pick-me-up.

I always love cause and effect assumptions. Perhaps the lower BMI folks stay thinner naturally and THEREFORE, don't worry about eating more chocolate.

Having a vacation home won't make a person rich, yet there is a very strong correlation.

I trained myself to like the darker stuff. I can enjoy 85% now. And my stomach reacs if I eat too much so that is good. Worst thing: worse than crack cocaine:

My personal theory is that people who eat chocolate satisfy their cravings with a small amount of chocolate, those who don't, eat other, higher calorie foods, while trying to deprive themselves of chocolate and end up eating more.

That's the same rationale I use for eating pizza every day. That plus it's a vegetable.

A low percentage dark chocolate would be 50-60%. Since working the way up percentage-wise, I find that anything below 70% tastes too sweet now.
