NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials say it's an armed robbery that began near one apartment complex and ended at another.
Officers with the North Charleston Police Department, Charleston County Sheriff's Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol were on the scene at Otranto Road Tuesday afternoon.
"From what we can gather a male victim arrived at that location, and I believe it was his daughter in the car. He was exiting out of the car to get his daughter when he was approached by a black male who came up to him and demanded his money, his jewelry and basically said 'give me everything,'" said Spencer Pryor, public information officer for the North Charleston Police Department.
Three people are in custody, one shot and in serious condition at MUSC following the incident.
Officials say it began at Greentree North Apartments at about 5:15 p.m. as the suspects robbed the man of his money and jewelry. It was a violent situation in which the man was approached and struck with the butt of a gun. In the end, the attempt to make off with the loot was foiled. The victim had a gun, and he used it.
"He the (suspect) hits the victim, he turns to walk away. The victim at that time reaches into his vehicle. He has a weapon. He fires a shot at the suspect. ...We had some shots exchanged. And, the victim was able to hit the suspect," Pryor said.
As the victim attempted to drive away, officials say two more people approached him, and one began shooting.
The incident ended less than a city block away, near Fairwind-Oakfield Apartments. That's where the other two people were taken into custody.
Officials with Charleston County EMS said two ambulances were sent to the scene. The person transported, according to law enforcement officials, was the suspect in the robbery. He was transported to MUSC in serious condition.
About two dozen people were kept from their homes as investigators looked for clues. Law enforcement canines and a helicopter searched the area into the dark hours of the night. Traffic was blocked for several hours, and those who happened to drive near the scene -- their cars were searched.
"Right now, it's very frustrating. I've been at work since six o'clock this morning. Twelve hour shift. My wife is pregnant with a little one at home. She's high risk, and I can't get to her," said Kelvin Smith, as he stood around waiting for police to allow him to go to his home.
Traffic on Fairwind Drive near the scene was blocked until after 7 p.m. Those kept from their homes were allowed into the security of their walls and roofs at about 7:50 p.m.
As the road was reopened, a green Honda could be seen being towed from the scene.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office assisted the North Charleston Police Department with the situation.
Witnesses at the scene said they saw more people involved than those taken into custody. That information could not be confirmed by law enforcement officials at the scene.

One time, I was at a tire shop waiting for service. The fellow in front of me was getting a tire change. When the clerk asked him to leave his vehicle, he asked the clerk to wait a minute while he retrieved all the guns from his truck. The clerk, without raising an eyebrow, said okay.

If you recall, the incident was in North Charleston. That would make it a high probability that the perps were Low Country Amish
