Trayvon Martin threatened to kill George Zimmerman, Zimmerman's father says

TAMPA - The father of 28-year-old George Zimmerman spoke out Wednesday night. In an exclusive interview with FOX 35's Valerie Boey, Robert Zimmerman says he and his family have gotten thousands of death threats.

He asked that his face not be shown as he explained what happened the night his son shot and killed Trayvon Martin.

Robert Zimmerman says George Zimmerman was going to the store when he saw someone he did not recognize as living in the community.

"Because there have been a lot of break-ins in the area, he thought that was suspicious that someone would not be walking on the street or the sidewalk. That he'd be walking by the town homes," Zimmerman said.

When things like this happen, I don’t put much stock in what parents say. I don’t take Martins parents claims seriously, either.

Good thing you don’t put much stock in Martin’s parents because they’ve proven liars.

Zimmerman’s story has been consistent and oh yea TWO different investigations showed there was no evidence he did anything wrong.
Do you think he should be arrested anyway? What do you actually believe?

Speaking of Martin’s parents does it bother you the only proven liars in this case so far are on Martin’s side of this case, yet you and some others are looking for conspiracies to convict Zimmerman.
Doesn’t bother you about the lies initial told by Martin’s friends and parents?

Its good to see Spi(t)e Lee appologized to the old people he scared half to death after giving out their address as Zimmermans.
There usaully is no accountability ammoungst the “justice” League.
I’m sure Spite Lee’s appology was heart felt and not an attempt to be sued for goobly gooks of money.

Exactly. As long as Obama can get the eyes off our domestic and world problems and onto stuff like this, then he can rest easy. Have all the headlines on this thug beating a guy nearly to death and the guy having to shoot the kid thinking that if I don’t, I may die here myself. That would have been what I would have done also. If I had been jumped and was on the ground and someone was beating me and trying to kill me, then yes, I would shoot him and worry about it later. This Zimmerman guy is basically lucky to be alive. Or this street thug, who got kicked out of school, and is the president’s long lost son, is some kind of hero.

What the hell are you talking about??? When things like this happen, parents have a tendency to defend their kids. Lots of emotion involved. Of course Martins parents will say he’s innocent. Of course Zimmermans parents will say he’s innocent. What the hell you expect them to say? You expect Martins parents to say he deserved to be shot? You expect Zimmermans parents to say he murdered Martin and he should die for it? You just go on and twist my words into some gigantic conspiracy.

Actually, the lead investigating officer Chris Serino did not believe Zimmerman’s story and wanted him arrested, according to this:

I wonder, if Zimmerman is shown to be telling the truth, do you think he can bring a lawsuit against the media, or certain people in the media, who deliberately lied about details, or mislead the public, with the intend of causing him appear guilty; thus inciting many viewers and readers to make threats against him and his family. Examples of this would be the new black panthers putting a bounty of one million dollars on his head, calls to his home making threats...

When scrolling down this photo, at first glance that bike looks like a giant horned beetle going for Mr Zimmerman's head.

That gash looks nasty. I thought it'd be lower down his head, not on top. The location is disturbing. I hope he didn't have a concussion and his neck/spine is fine.

Libel is a defamatory and untrue statement about a living person or existing institution. Lbel injures reputation by exposing a person to public hatred, shame, disgrace or ridicule.

Libel is one of the most significant dangers in the media professions and for citizen-publishers.

A libel suit is a civil case (not criminal in the US or Europe). Allegations of libel in the mass media or on the Internet usually stem from articles that allege immorality, loathesome disease, crime, dishonesty or misconduct. People often sue to restore their reputations and to correct what they view as a falsehood, regardless of personal expense or the legal merits of their cases.

What is libel? The following elements have to be present:

1. Identification of a person or very small group of individually identifyable people allegedly defamed.

Note that there are two kinds of identification — direct (Per Se ) and indirect (Per Quod). Direct identification in libel names a person specifically. Indirect libel may be a circumstance or mistake that can be construed as holding a person up to ridicule, such as congratulating a woman on her pregnancy when she is not married.

2. Publication, broadcast or wide dissemination of defamatory material (Wide dissemination falls under libel; slander is neighborhood gossip).
3. Defamation, defined as untrue words that tend to harm a person’s reputation or expose them to hatred, contempt or ridicule. Defamation means that a statement actually harms the reputation of another person, rather than being merely insulting or offensive
4. Fault on the part of the publisher or broadcaster, such as negligence or malice. It can’t merely be false, as the court said in Gertz v. Welch (below).
5. Damages — The plaintiff has to prove they were damaged, either directly (loss of income) or indirectly (proveable pain and suffering). A court may also impose puntive (punishment) damages on a defendant found guilty of defamation. In other tort areas, such as copyright infringement, there may be statutory damages that are specifically set out in a law (statute).

a) special (direct) damages / direct quantifiable out of pocket expenses or losses
b) general (indirect) damages — compensation for non-monetary damages such as pain and suffering.

Defamation, libel, and slander are related terms that refer to harm done to reputation or character through untrue, twisted, or malicious statements. Issues regarding these concepts may be as simple as high school gossip or as complicated as corporate litigation for defamation. Generally, defamation is the act of harming reputation through untrue or malicious statements, while libel and slander are considered forms or methods of defamation.

Reputation is incredibly important in human civilization; defamation lawsuits do not merely handle the hurt feelings of a person or entity, but instead attempt to determine if there is grounds for monetary damages based on actual harm caused. For instance, if a person states factually to the media that all of the products sold by a company are tainted with lead, that company may lose customers and stock value even if the statement is untrue or twisted. If the statement could be shown to be malicious and misleading, the person making the statement could be sued for defamation.

Libel is the term used to describe defamation when it is made in print or through written communication. Generally, the information must be given to a third party and published publicly; a person usually cannot be sued for libel for something he or she writes in a personal diary, for instance. It is also necessary for the libelous statement to cause measurable harm. A written lie that causes no damages may be a violation of integrity, but is usually not grounds for a lawsuit.

FR has become the number one place to come for nearly everything I want to know about. Even local events to some extent. Having multiple views from people of all levels of society and experience analyze and opine on the news of the day is 1,000Xs more interesting and informative than the old MSM and its plastic templated narrative.

It is difficult, though. It requires that we pay attention, REALLY pay attention and give some thought to it.

And even then, we can come to the wrong conclusions. Good thing is, if one can keep an open mind to ones own inevitable fallibility, it makes the process easier.

"...Well done. Can you imagine what the narrative would be like had this happened before the Internet? If all we had were the Big 3 to get us information?"
1010RD makes a great point. The dissemination of information used to be the nearly sole province of "Big Media".
Freeper conservatism_is_compassion has contributed some great commentary over the years on this subject, the bottom line being that there has NEVER been objective media, it is a myth.
The individual elements of the media would figure out what the message was, package the information into a format that would convey that message most effectively, and distribute it. It wasn't a monolithic enterprise where they were all faxing the talking points to each other, but when they all share pretty much the same world view, that didn't have to happen. The message would be uniform enough.
Actually, “the wire” obviates the need for any faxes of talking points. If you work for a newspaper which is a member of the Associated Press, you take on the mission of writing for the AP wire. And getting your reports shared over “the wire” and published by newspapers all over the country is a big deal for a journalist. To hit the big time, you need to please the journalistic community - and the journalistic community wants stories that bleed so that they can lede. They want "Man Bites Dog," not “Dog Bites Man,” stories.
It doesn’t take a fax of “talking points” to do that. But that does have political implications. If traditionally the important and prestigious jobs were done by white men, it is “Man Bites Dog” if a black or a woman becomes the head of Hewlett-Packard. If half the crime is perpetrated by the 10% of Americans who descended from slaves, then it is “Dog Bites Man,” and not jazzy enough to emphasize in the paper, if another black - possibly, tho we can’t actually be certain at this point, Trayvon Martin - attacks someone of a different, or the same, race.

“Man Bites Dog” stories are inherently interesting because they are inherently atypical of what usually happens. And even if you didn’t deliberately focus on the negative, sudden unexpected changes are typically negative - it is so much easier for a house to burn down than it is for a house to be built suddenly and unexpectedly. But the negative, and the Man Bites Dog, emphasis of journalism inherently tends to make news reports seem to constantly tell you that the world is in a mess and getting worse. And of course, “Things can’t get worse!” is an extreme radical statement. What follows from it is (as Shakespeare put it), “Desperate ills are by desperate measures cured, or not at all."

They have really exaggerated the intensity of that mark Phil. I watched the police video 4 times and on different sites and that barely shows up. Also, it’s not the ‘back’ of his head but up higher. No facial injury is apparent, no blood, even on his clothes.

He is also much slimmer and trimmer than the photo that has been shown all week, so that photo was as deceptive as Trayvons. Why was he handcuffed if the police considered him innocent from the start? I’m confused about that. I always take a ‘wait and see’ view.

It is all very easy to see in that light. I always boil it down to the fact they aren’t in the business to inform the public, they are in the business of making money.

That, and the power trip that comes to them from feeling as if they were having an influence on events.

Thanks for the excellent post.

"...Well done. Can you imagine what the narrative would be like had this happened before the Internet? If all we had were the Big 3 to get us information?"
101ORD makes a great point. The dissemination of information used to be the nearly sole province of "Big Media".

. . . But we were a captive audience. And many people, no, MOST people trusted the media. They TRUSTED people like Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather to tell us the truth, and assumed they did so. It was only with the passage of time that we could look dispassionately on that time, and realize just what took place.

The Internet has changed all that. Personally, I have not read a newspaper, read a magazine (such as Time or Newsweek) or watched a full news broadcast in nearly a decade. I consider myself far better informed than the majority of people I know.

But that comes with a price. With that freedom of not being beholden to Big Media comes responsibility...the responsibility of having to vet information myself and not depend on someone else (such as ABC, NBC, CBS, NYT, LA Times, Boston Globe, etc.) to do it for me. And this is sometimes not only difficult to do, it is occasionally impossible to do, and I am left with having to make a best guess. And not being infallible, I make mistakes in judgement.

This is where a site like Free Republic becomes invaluable. Here, there can be generally open discussion about an issue. Many different people can view the available evidence and with a multitude of perspectives (some useful and some not so useful) an issue can be attacked piecemeal and broken down, much like a bunch of people with hammers and chisels working on a gigantic boulder.

I have found that on FR, any opinion or theory, no matter how crackpot or politically incorrect, can be promoted by a poster. However, I have also found that if you have a point of view, it is not going to be simply accepted as another valid theory, but can and WILL be deconstructed by participants. It is done with experience, humor, anger, insight, ignorance, bias, prejudice and wisdom. What results is, if not a good handle on an issue, is a wider perspective on that issue.

. . . It is both critically useful and maddeningly frustrating to approach the issues this way, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Thank God for this forum.

The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing . . .

It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity,
and they very seldom teach it enough.
  - Adam Smith

Pure and simple, we come to FR to pool our “incredulity” so that we can muster enough skepticism to have a chance at attaining a modicum of wisdom.

Excellent summaries all around and completely true.

Special thanks to you Jim. Without FReerepublic the conservative cause might have been lost or very, very limited. When I think back on a decade plus of aggressive resistance and skepticism and all the information we’ve brought forth - most of it deeply embarrassing to the liberal elite - FReerepublic is truly keeping the Republic free.

Best regards to all and again deep thanks to you Jim.
