TV ad shows danger of 'invisible secondhand smoke'

Making houses and cars smokefree is the only way to protect children from second-hand smoke, according to a new government campaign in England.

The TV and radio adverts show how pervasive invisible second-hand smoke can be.

Breathing it in can damage lungs and cause cancers, research has shown.

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health said it wanted to see smoking in cars made illegal, when children are present. "I have no doubt an outright ban on smoking in cars would have the same positive results [as banning drink-driving]” - Prof Terence Stephenson Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health

Professor Terence Stephenson, President of the RCPCH, said: "The state does have a duty to protect children's health and intervene where necessary.

Second hand smoke only took about a year to ruin my Sony 50" rear screen projection. It looks like shit now, even with a new bulb. The smoke got to the optical block and now there's no brilliance. I hate being around smokers. After the other half kills herself, I'll never live with it again!

But that doesn't mean I think the government has any business with it.

You have to be a MORON to pay $7 a pack, but intelligence can't be legislated.

Exactly. It is a fithly, stinking habit, with no obvious benefits and some risks. But it is legal, and therefore a matter of personal choice.

$7 a pack? That is dirt cheap. It’s around $10 per pack here (£6.80 on average). Five years ago it was £3.20.
Our dear leaders discovered that doing a big push to get people to quit smoking worked. So they had to really jack up the tax on the ones left to make up the tax shortfall.
Now I don’t know what you guys call them, but we call someone who makes money off another’s addiction a dealer.

The worry over second hand smoke is bogus. I grew up in a household of smokers. My lungs are perfect and I am 70+.

After practicing medicine for 36 years this is what I have observed:

*A very few people can smoke like a chimney and exhibit no ill effects. I suspect that this is genetic since most of them provide a history that their parents smoked and lived past 80.

*The majority of people who smoke will exhibit decreased lung function after about 20 years of smoking. If they continue to smoke their lung function will continue to deteriorate.

*Some people have poor lung function regardless of tobacco use. If they smoke it only makes things worse.

If we graphed my statements they would resemble the Bell Curve just like most things in Nature.

All this being said, I am not in favor of anyone using tobacco in any form. Why take the chance?

OTOH, it is none of the gubbmint’s business. If you want to smoke, have at it. Its your life. Just don’t expect me to feel sorry for you when you develop COPD or lung cancer.

Yep. When the left decided to dumb us down, I think they started with math. The most elementary statistics is unknown to seemingly everyone these days.

Yep 43North. I'm a non smoker MD, too. And your statistics are right. I'm sure you've seen the graph of smokers and lung capacity. Some people can "handle" it but there's a subset that REALLY goes down at about 40 pack-years. I think it's the double hit hypothesis, otherwise there wouldn't be such a huge gap in smoking related deaths. The 90 year old still-puffer, vs. Susan Oliver (the green chick in Star Trek) at 50. And then there are the complete mysteries, like Andy Kaufman. He only smoked when he was portraying Tony Clifton. Other than that he was a TM-loving health freak. Dead at 35 from lung CA. Sorry, no sale that it was "second-hand" smoke in clubs that got him. I don't think SHS is necessarily "safe", but if it were THAT deadly, KIDS would have lung CA.

But I still fully support businesses and adults making the decision for themselves. Nobody gets out alive.

“I have seen evidence that second hand smoke has an effect”

Actually it has a positive effect. Think of it as a vaccination process for the lungs. As proof you can simply look at the skyrocketing asthma and allergy rates in children today, which seems to be very much in line with with reduced exposure to tobacco smoke.

In fact the WHO proved that exposure to second hand smoke has positive correlations to the reductions of cancer and other ailments. Check out the DaveHitt link posted earlier in this thread for the actual study.

Wow. It has been a long time since I heard such bitterness by a FReeper against his/her spouse. What is truly sad is that you valued the TV above her. Go back and read your post..you may want to reconsider.

To summarize, this is how it reads to an ousider, “I hate being around my wife and can’t wait till she dies so that I don’t have to be around her any more. Plus she is a moron!”

The bitterness is simply astounding.

What utter BS! I'm sick of the wasted money and watching her kill herself, sick of the coughing so hard she pukes or pisses herself then watching her light up right afterwards. All I said was I'll never have another woman who smokes.

Take your psychoanalysis over to DU - There are lots of other morons there who think just like you.

Well possibly, but then there are other possible reasons why asthma is on the increase - a general increase in atmospheric pollutants of all kinds over the same time period being an obvious one.

Your response contains more bitterness. I could not even fathom discussing anyone I love with the tone of bitterness that you are using. She is your wife and your opinion is all that really matters, mine is irrelevant. That said, you should really re-read your postings and consider if you are happy saying these things to strangers about someone that you have vowed to love and cherish, “for better or worse.”

I agree that there could be many reasons, however the anti-tobacco zealouts use correlation as causation all the time, so my point is that what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

According to the World Health Organization’s study of secondhand smoke, it either has no effect or a protective effect. The results were so different from what they expected that they didn’t make a big deal over them.
