LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles police say burglars who broke into a Hancock Park home stole a safe believed to contain $10 million in cash, jewelry and other items.

A Police Department statement Monday says investigators believe crooks jumped a security gate and smashed a glass side door to enter the home in the wealthy neighborhood on March 16.

How secure is a vault door on a concrete room compared to a large safe?

Reminds one of the movie, “The Italian Job.”

I would think that a reinforced concrete vault would be more difficult to break into than a steel one.

I was looking into concrete when I built my safe, but I ended up making the exterior out of steel. It’s still a work in progress. The door weighs 1200 lbs. I still bolted it to the slab.

Actually, Obama makes frequent fundraising stops in Hancock Park.

$10 milion dollars is a lot of money, to nearly everybody, to have on hand.

Since we don’t know who it was stolen from, it could be nearly anybody.

Is there a chance that this is drug money?

I learned on “Storage Wars” that any safe, no matter how big. can be broken into in a matter of minutes.

From what I've seen on tv, movies and read in the NYT, a 9mm semiautomatic with a high capacity magazine will blow the door to Ft. Knox open.

It was Colonel Mustard. I think the police should ask questions to people who had access to the house. The LAPD will be looking into this because of the amount of money and jewels that was taken.

I am definitely sure the insurance company handling the Homeowners insurance policy will be asking questions if the owners file a claim.

Well the time depends on where the safe is located. A large one with good door hinges that is bolted to a slab inside a closet or narrow corner is going to take a while longer. The worst case estimate on mine is around an hour with the right tools.

It wasn't even claimed to be just money. It was supposedly jewelry, cash and "other items".

I am going to bet that it is a scam and after some period the jewelry, actual value far less than claimed, will be sold.

The insurance company will do its best to wiggle out of this, and may well discover fraud.
