A North Bend man shot and killed an intruder who smashed his way into a Si View residence late Friday.
According to media reports and the King County Sheriff's Office, the resident, who is 46 years old, and his girlfriend were awakened just before midnight when a man, apparently a burglar, threw a propane tank through their sliding glass door. They live at the 400 block of Orchard Drive.
Reports stated that while the residents hid, they could hear the intruder rummaging through their belongings. The male resident warned the intruder several times that he had a gun, but the intruder refused to leave and threatened violence.
According to the reports, the residents heard the intruderyelling, "Where are you? I'm going to kill you!"
The man at the home retrieved a handgun from his nightstand and yelled numerous times , "I have a pistol. Get out of my house!"
The couple locked themselves inside their bedroom, listening as the man kept ransacking the house, yelling that he was coming after them. When the intruder kicked down the door to the bedroom, the man fired at him. Deputies arrived to find the intruder dead on the floor just outside the room.
The shot man had already startled a neighbor prior to the fatal encounter. Just after 11:30 p.m. Friday, March 30, at a residence in the 300 block of Southeast Fifth Street, woman called 911 and said that an unknown man, was pounding on her door and windows yelling to be let in.Sheriff's deputies arrived, but couldn't find the man, instead hearing a loud crash and banging sound from the Orchard Drive residence.
The intruder was not known to the couple or to the woman at the home on Fifth Avenue.
King County Sheriff's Sergeant Cindi West calls this a clear case of self defense.
"The resident showed quite a bit of restraint," she said. He continued to yell at the suspect to leave the house and said he was armed. The couple even locked themselves in a room to try to avoid a confrontation. They had no way of knowing if the suspect was armed. The resident was clearly forced to shoot to defend himself and his girfriend. "
Reports say the King County Medical Examiner's office will conduct an autopsy to find out whether the intruder was influenced by alcohol or drugs.
I hope they had hearing protection, or their ears will suffer. Electronic hearing protection can enhance hearing while protecting the ears.
And once again we are shown that the gene pool is self regulating in the long view. ... Moral: never bring stupid to a gun fight.
I just don’t understand. The intruder throws a propane tank through your patio window, and the homeowner ‘hides’, then gets a gun. He then announces that he has a gun, and has no intention of defending his home from getting trashed.
I hate cleaning up a mess, especially a mess I didn’t make.
I’m the homeowner that will quietly sit in the shadows, will quietly chamber a fresh hollow-point from my clip full of it’s brothers; and there will be no warning - just 3 or more flashes from the muzzle.
My house, my castle, my domain and my story is simple. He broke in, and I felt threatened. All a warning does, is inform a possibly armed intruder of your location.
I love a story with a happy ending!
Somewhere above 90+ percent of the time, criminals, when confronted with an armed defender, run off.
No bloody mess to clean up.
No biohazard of HIV or Hepatitis.
No civil suit against the homeowner.
No possibility of spending years in court and all of your savings defending yourself against the persecutions of an anti-self defense prosecutor.
No hearing loss from the amplified blast of a high power handgun inside the confines of a home.
And, did you notice how clear the case became one of self defense?
It seems to me that the 90+ percent chance of avoiding all of the above risks warrant the small tactical disadvantage that may result from letting the intruder know that you are there and armed.
Of course, every situation is unique, and judgement is called for.
If you want to play with a 1-10% chance of having a criminal kill you; that is your perogative. If you want to live in perpetual fear that the burglar will feel 'disrespected' because he was forced to run off; and will return on a personal vendetta, again, that is your perogative.
I prefer to live with my choice. If they don't break into my house, they have absolutely nothing to fear. Me, I refuse to live in fear - that is my perogative.
This has been posted three times and as yet we do not know who he was and what he was doing.
