Katy dad who left kids in van at gun store: 'People make mistakes'

HOUSTON—A father who is accused of leaving his two kids in a car while he shopped at a gun store in Katy told KHOU 11 News he made a mistake, and he wants his kids back.

"I regret it obviously. I feel bad about it. I didn’t do it on purpose. Now, we’re trying to move forward," said Gage Eason.

Eason, 21, and his wife, Hailie Eason, 21, met with KHOU 11 News after a supervised visit with their children Monday morning.

Child Protective Services removed their children, 6-month-old Cameron and 18-month-old Ember, from the Easons' home following what happened inside Tactical Firearms on March 24, 2012.

Cameras from the store’s surveillance system captured Eason looking at guns inside the store for nearly 50 minutes while his two children sat in their car seats in his van in the parking lot.

By time Eason left the store, someone had noticed the children and called 911.

"People make mistakes every day. Mine just happened to be shown on camera. It wasn’t intentional," Eason told KHOU 11 News. "I love my kids and there’s nothing more important than my kids."

Eason said he lost track of time.

"I have a hard time judging time sometimes, and I didn’t feel like I was there for that long, so I was actually shocked I was there for that long," he said.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The kids are fine.

But what about the guns?

If it had been a Hallmark Card Store and not a firearms dealer, would Child Protective Services have taken the children? I’m guessing probably not.

The article goes on to say they are expecting another kid.

And that they have an attorney. And he denies being part of any Militia.

Interesting stuff.

Yep they would that is how government works. In the 1950’s my mother left us in the car all the time. It depends on the age of the kids and how hot is it. Today you can’t roll down windows with a hand crank like you could in the 1950’s and 1960’s autos.... Not really a big deal though that he left his kids in the car.

Mr. Eason, you are an idiot.

I’m sure it was unintentional to leave them in the car for that long.

But it was surely intentional to leave them in the car and go into the store.

You don’t leave children of that age alone in a car for two minutes, much less 50.

EXACTLY! I wouldn’t leave children alone in the care for 5 minutes, no less 50 minutes.

Correction-That should have read, I wouldn’t leave children alone that young in the car for 5 minutes, no less 50 minutes.

I think the kids still would have been taken. Leaving children that young, for that long is taken very seriously. I don’t think it would be as big a story in the media, though, as it wouldn’t fit the narrative that gun owner = bad person.

Gage was exercising his 2nd Amendment Rights and that trumps anything that the CPS says or does to Ember and Cameron.

As stated earlier, you don’t leave kids alone in a car, especially in Texas where it’s already hot. I never ever left my son in the car, I took him everywhere. If I was going to a gun store I WOULD HAVE LEFT HIM AT HOME with my wife or a babysitter. DUH! Hello? McFly?

This jacka$$ clearly could have done it a lot differently.

What a bunch of BS. Who was the meddling SOB that reported them? That person needs to decorate a lamp post.

My God, my parents left us in the car all the time when we were kids while they went shopping. It made the experience a lot more efficient.

Crap, what has this country come to?

My thoughts as well. I did that sort of thing with my kids. My mother did it with me when she went grocery shopping in the late 50’s and early 60’s. I remember it well because one day, when I was about five, I saw the lady in the car next to me put her car in gear to leave, and I pulle our car out of park (55 oldsmobile with auto) and the car rolled backward out of the space. I had the presence of mind to crank the wheel so it came to a stop in the middle of the path between the rows of cars.

No big deal. Everybody helped me, my mother came out, nobody was hurt, and we went on with our lives.

People meddle way too much today.

Um okay.

I am not sure it matters WHERE he was at the time, unless it was a strip club or porn shop... anything else is immaterial really.

Don’t be so melodramatic. My parents left me in the car all the time when they were just running into a store for a short while and in much hotter temperatures than in this story. On March 24, 2012, when this story happened the temperature in Katy,TX was a low of 54 F and a high of 81 F, which is hardly a heat wave.

It does all seem to be an overreaction by the authorities. After all, Ember is 18 months old, with that name, she already has a career path, and she is plenty capable of caring for herself and her little brother.

Oh, the usual way. Gossip and rumors.

FTA:

One of the Easons’ attorneys addressed rumors that have circulated on the Internet.

“He is not part of some Texas militia. His life is not buying and selling guns. He was there looking at guns. He made the mistake of leaving his kids in the car in no way should the family be torn apart,” said James Hedlesten

You have got to be kidding. Leaving a 6 month and 18 month old kids out in a car for 50 minutes. What are you thinking?

Guess I got lucky. When my daughter was an infant in a car seat, she had the good habit of dozing off, giving me a few minutes of peace. I was in a shiny BMW that afternoon and decided to step in the front door of a local gun store. The counter was only two steps from the front door.
Shutting off the engine was a guaranteed way to wake her up, so I let it run. Of course,, as I watched from just inside, two of the worst gang looking characters you ever did see pulled in and parked beside my car.
As they looked at the running car, with a little conservative infant sleeping in the back seat, one of them said, ‘mannnnnn,, you know that sh*t ain’t right. Touch one finger on dat car, and somebody be jumpin’ out that door with a 45 talkin’ about FREEZE mother f-er’. (they were right)
So I start laughing,, then they see me, and totally crack up.
One of those funny gun store afternoons. Adult daughter loves that story.
