Government plans to sue Arizona sheriff for targeting Latinos

The Obama administration on Tuesday said it was preparing to sue Arizona county sheriff Joe Arpaio and his department for violating civil rights laws by improperly targeting Latinos in a bid to crack down on illegal immigrants.

The sheriff's high-profile crackdown on illegal immigrants has helped thrust the issue onto the national political stage with some states passing tough new laws aimed at pushing out those in the country illegally.

The administration's Justice Department and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office have been in settlement talks for months over allegations that officers regularly made unlawful stops and arrests of Latinos, used excessive force against them and failed to adequately protect the Hispanic community.

Those negotiations have broken down because of a fight over the Justice Department's demand that an independent monitor be appointed by a federal court to oversee compliance with the settlement, which has now reached 128 pages in draft form, according to the Obama administration.

The Justice Department in a December report outlined numerous alleged civil rights violations, including that Latino drivers were four to nine times more likely to be stopped than non-Latinos by Arpaio's force.

The sheriff has steadfastly denied any wrongdoing and lashed out at the Obama administration for targeting his department and failing to deal with the problem of illegal immigration with some 11.5 million believed to be in the United States.

In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, Arpaio said the appointment of a monitor would force him to abdicate responsibility for his police force, including decisions about policies, operations, jail programs and enforcement.

"To the Obama administration, who is attempting to strong arm me into submission only for its political gain, I say: This will not happen, not on my watch!" Arpaio said in the statement.

1. Detected and turned over plenty of non-Mex. illegals to ICE.

How is he going to do that when all the illegals are Mexican?

Living about 45 miles from the largest US-Mex. border, I can tell you we don't see Asian illegals! Maybe he needs to look for some Swedish illegals?

Did you ever consider it's the illegals from Mexico that are breaking the laws that get them pulled over in the first place? My experience (from sharing the freeways with them): their vehicles alone break the law.

Someone please help me here - I only have a public education! IF most of the illegal immigrants are coming from Mexico, and IF you really wanted to "crack down on illegal immigrants", wouldn't you target Latinos, as opposed to, say, Canadians, or Europeans, or Asians, or Africans???

In a place like NYC you get a more diverse mix of illegals such as Mulsims, Indians, Chinese, etc
But Arizona? Illegal aliens there are just about always Mexicans and other Hispanics.

The Deputies and Posse members do not target people by their race. That is known as “racial profiling,” and it’s illegal. Most of the traffic stops during enforcement patrols are due to driving infractions or equipment violations. If people would obey traffic laws and keep their vehicles street-legal, there would be no Probable Cause to pull them over. Because illegal aliens won’t do these things, they make the highways and city streets a target-rich environment, and they have no one to blame but themselves.

I can guarantee you, there are PLENTY of “OTM’s” in the area!

The Mex get detected most easily as they refuse to make any effort at assimilation.

Illegals from other parts of the world either try to blend in, or rarely leave their ethnic enclaves. (”Chinatown”, “Little Havana”, Dearborn, etc.)

Sheriff Joe needs to bust a bunch of OTM’s if he has not already done so.

You do have a point about not blending in.....we see old pick ups piled high with old mattresses. They drive under the speed limit on the freeways.

I don't think Arpaio needs to do anything other than what he is already doing...executing the law as written. Obama is out to shut him up so will find fault with anything the sheriff does.

Gunrunner was a successful program under the Bush administration to tag and track guns in Mexico. None of the guns was lost, and investigations and arrests were made.

Gunwalker was a perversion by the zer0 administration of Gunrunner. The requirement for tag and track was dropped, and thousands of guns were sold into Mexico, where they were used to kill hundreds of Mexican citizens, Border Patrol Agent Bryan Terry, and US Special Agent Jaime Zapata. Fast and Furious was Gunwalker on steroids, and it was an obvious ruse to attack the 2nd Amendment rights of American citizens by claiming that the gun dealers the government forced to sell weapons to Mexican buyers require more regulation and confiscation of their stock to prevent "gun violence" that our very government caused in the first place.

It is a most illegal and disgusting situation, and everyone involved should be prosecuted and hanged as mass murderers if convicted, up to and including zer0.

I live near Tucson. I drive the roads daily, and I have no idea if someone is Hispanic when looking from the rear - where most cops are when they decide to pull someone over.

So just HOW does a cop ‘target’ Hispanics to pull over?

Excepting, of course, the pick-ups piled 10 feet high with stuff, which are driven by Mexicans most of the time - and that are illegal for ANYONE to drive.
