Drop whatever you're doing and watch this. NASA has released videos shot from onboard the Space Shuttle's Solid Rocket Boosters in the past, but you've never seen one prepared as masterfully as this.
For one thing, the footage was shot in high definition, so the image is exceptionally clear. But what puts this video head and shoulders above most other rocketcams is the sound. The audio has been remastered by the folks over at Skywalker Sound (yes, that Skywalker Sound), and the final product is nothing short of incredible.
TOPICS: Business/Economy; Culture/Society; News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: shuttle; spaceshuttle
Incredible, especially the segment as it breaks the sound barrier and all the compression vapor disappears.
PS; .....and Obama pissed it all away!

Awesome!!! Too bad we don't do that anymore.
"You can go from rocket's red glare down to 'brother can you spare'..." ~Some old Rush song that turned out to be prophetic.~

First things first - I despise 0bama. However, in the 30 years of the space shuttle program, WTF did we the taxpayer get for the billions and billions and billions of dollars NASA spent?
In my opinion, NASA long ago became just as useless as the Depts of Energy, Education, EPA, etc.
All of them (and many others) have become so politicized they're little more than tools for the pinko-commies to overthrow the Constitution.

Cmon.
That’s not nearly as exciting and awe-inspiring as seeing 300 lb racist, generational parasites checking out via EBT cards, with a stack of T-Bones and salmon fillets, at the local supermarket.

Impressive video, however the shuttles orbited the earth about 22,000 times and at the end was relegated to resupplying the ISS...
One of the biggest successes IMO was the repair to Hubble.

... WTF did we the taxpayer get for the billions and billions and billions of dollars NASA spent? Maybe we got that n-core mini-laptop computer you're typing on? Maybe we got this Internet that allows us to communicate in near real time and saves us countless hours of flying around the country? Maybe we got rocketry science incorporated into the weapons that protect us every day.
Or maybe all NASA ever did was plant a few dreams in the heads of a few young people? Maybe into the head of the next Albert Einstein(?)
Nah, nothing to see here. Move along!

Well said D. Also to consider, the employment of hundreds of thousands of Americans for all of those years in all of the related to NASA fields/areas. Incalculable to total that ‘plus’ for the USA I suppose but you get my thoughts I’m sure.

I know that I took my own experience as a NASA engineer to NORAD to model the flight patterns of incoming ICBMs so that we could recognize an incoming attack. No real value there.
Everyone I worked with at NASA (except for the ones who worked themselves to death "doing space") fanned out to major corporations around the country.
And, let me also say, those NASA folks worked their *BUTTS* off - I can't count the endless unpaid nights I spent working on the SMS simulator to make sure we made the next liftoff schedule - all for about $16/hour (for the hours that found their way to a time card).
