White House officials held talks with representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood in Washington this week, as the Islamist group threw itself into the fray in Egypt's presidential election.

The meeting on Tuesday with low-level National Security Council staff was part of a series of US efforts to broaden engagement with new and emerging political parties following Egypt's revolution last year, a US official said.

The White House pointed out that Republican Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain, and other US lawmakers and officials had also met with Brotherhood representatives in Egypt and elsewhere in recent months.

"We believe that it is in the interest of the United States to engage with all parties that are committed to democratic principles, especially nonviolence," said National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor.

The Muslim brotherhood differs from Al-Quaeda only in tactics but share the same goals.

And Obama takes offense when people believe him to be Muslim? It must be contrary to his goals.

Al Quaida *is* the Muslim Brotherhood. AQ’s founders came straight out of that organization, f.exs Zawahiri.

Obama continues to help the Islamists in forming a block of radical sharia states that will form the core of a Greater Caliphate that will threaten us, Israel and Europe.

You left out the rest of the world. These maniacs are an existential threat to life on earth. We want to give them the Egyptian military. We’ve got to win this election. Another 4 years of Obama and you might as well just kick over the lamp yourself.

Yeesh, “democracy” and representational government don’t work everywhere, especially in countries that would vote for Islamic radicals.

Instead of pushing for democracy, we should be pushing for the best government possible, no matter what form it’s in. In much of the Islamic world, the best we can hope for is a relatively secular strong-man or king.

Given the predominant “islamic” culture & mentality in those countries, I don’t know what else we could expect when Mobarak was overthrown.

Btw, the person who assassinated Anwar Sadat belonged to MB or an offshoot of MB. Pretty sure their mentality & tactics haven’t changed much since the 1980s.

This is a continuation since Carter's time... here is what Bill Clinton (few years ago) had to say in a television interview with Charlie Rose:

“Iran is the only country in the world that has now had six elections since the first election of President Khatami (in 1997). (It is) the only one with elections, including the United States, including Israel, including you name it, where the liberals, or the progressives, have won two-thirds to 70 percent of the vote in six elections: Two for president; two for the Parliament, the Majlis; two for the mayoralties. In every single election, the guys I identify with got two-thirds to 70 percent of the vote. There is no other country in the world I can say that about, certainly not my own.”

Amir Taheri then writes: So, while millions of Iranians, especially the young, look to the United States as a mode of progress and democracy, a former president of the US looks to the Islamic Republic as his ideological homeland.

But who are “the guys” Clinton identifies with?

There is, of course, President Muhammad Khatami who, speaking at a conference of provincial governors last week, called for the whole world to convert to Islam.

“Human beings understand different affairs within the global framework that they live in,” he said. “But when we say that Islam belongs to all times and places, it is implied that the very essence of Islam is such that despite changes (in time and place) it is always valid.”

There is also Khatami’s brother, Muhammad-Reza, the man who, in 1979, led the “students” who seized the US Embassy in Tehran and held its diplomats hostage for 444 days. There is Massumeh Ebtekar, a poor man’s pasionaria who was spokesperson for the hostage-holders in Tehran. There is also the late Ayatollah Sadeq Khalkhali, known to Iranians as “Judge Blood”. -- Excerpt from Amir Taheri’s 2009 book “The Persian Night”, worth reading the page

For some reason they mistake "elections" & semblance of democracy for the real stuff. The willful ignorance is astounding!

Agreed. And, that king or secular strong-man shouldn't be encouraging islam, instead have programs & introduce initiatives, all around & at all levels, that educate & move people away from islamic this & that, be it gradually.

Inquiring minds want to see the recent travel vouchers and logs for Congress the past few months. I want to know who else beside Graham and McCain made these negotiatiating excursions. I know there are some savvy FReepers out there that can find such information or know where to look.

They said McCain was in Egypt, but it appears not all the foreign travel information is available?

This is sickening. From the office of the pResident on down through Congress, we have nothing but incompetent fools handing this Country over to the very people who attacked us on our own soil.
