It fell out of fashion because of the sexual revolution, and young people persuaded that casual sex, not marriage, was the way to go. Which didn’t quite turn out as well as they had hoped.

The bottom line is that if you tried necking with half a dozen or a dozen people, and it just didn’t work with any of them, the light would pretty much dawn that you “weren’t the marrying kind”. And that is a heck of a lot less painful than having three or four failed marriages because you didn’t realize you were incompatible until after you were married. It is also a lot less harmful to children of failed marriages.

Now especially in the South, not being compatible wouldn’t necessarily mean that you wouldn’t get married at all; just that the marriage would be a financial arrangement, a financial partnership instead of a romantic one.

And those aren’t particularly good partnerships, much less marriages, either.

I cant believe you use this as a litmus test to whether you are marriage material or not. It's near talibanish/7th century way to marriage.
