Santorum’s campaign releases their delegate count: Romney 571, Santorum 342

This is interesting. There’s a lot of issues as to how this will be handled at the convention by the RNC as they explain below, but their numbers certainly look better than the media’s counts. I’m sure they will be analyzed quite at bit in the coming days:

The Media’s Delegate Math is Wrong

There are a couple of fundamental flaws with the delegate counts that the media keeps that reveals that this race is much closer than they report:

1)      Florida, Arizona, and quite possibly Puerto Rico will be proportional rather than Winner Take All.  They broke RNC rules by going winner take all before the window and therefore RNC Members and/or the convention will enforce the rules and make the delegations proportional.  This will reduce Romney’s delegate total substantially and increase the other three candidates’ respective delegate totals.

2)      National Convention Delegates are elected at County, District, and State conventions rather than by the initial beauty contests in many states.  For example, in Washington State Romney was allocated 25 delegates, Paul 8 delegates, Santorum 7 delegates, and Gingrich 0 delegates.  The Santorum and Paul campaigns are working together in Washington State and the result will be more delegates for Santorum and Paul and a dramatic decrease in delegates for Romney.  Santorum will also over perform in most other states that use this process and Romney will underperform.

3)      Unbound delegates – The media continues to put unbound delegates in their counts in the territories and other states.  These folks can change their mind, or have yet to make up their mind, and should not be counted as if they are bound.

 

The REAL Count

Our current internal count that takes into account ongoing county, district, and state conventions is as follows:

Romney – 571

Santorum – 342

Newt – 158

Paul – 91

 

Texas is Going Winner Take All

The state of Texas is in the process of announcing that they are going to go Winner Take All rather than proportional.  This will have a dramatic impact on the delegate projections, tighten the race after Santorum wins Texas, and significantly hinder Romney’s capacity to ever get 1144 delegates because he will not get his proportion of the state.  Simply put, this is a Game Changer.  The race is almost even if you account for a Rick Santorum win in Texas under a Winner Take All system, and there is a clear Conservative Majority with Newt Gingrich.

 

The Calendar Moves to May

The month of April was always going to be difficult but the calendar gets much more friendly for Rick Santorum in May.  North Carolina, Indiana, West Virginia, Nebraska, Oregon, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Texas might lead to Santorum winning roughly 7 out of 8 states in May, and heading into the June 5th primaries with a freight train of momentum.

 

Conservative Majority with Newt Gingrich

The campaign continues to reach out to Newt Gingrich’s team to work together on County, State, and District conventions to prevent Romney from achieving 1144 and to elect a Conservative Majority of delegates.

I agree. It is funny that a lot of the “non-Romney” supporters made a big fuss over changing the rules after the game had started, but now they want to do the same in Fl and Az.

No it's not. They need approval from the RNC to do so, and the RNC has already said they won't issue a waiver.

This entire Santorum delegate count news release is laughable fantasy. The fact they claim Texas is "Going Winner Take All" when the RNC will never approve such a thing and everyone who understands the issue knows it is not going to happen goes to show what utter nonsense this is. Rick is grasping at straws and is fooling only those people who can't understand math or are living in some alternate universe where political reality doesn't exist.

The rule was that a WTA couldnt schedule before a certain date. So Fl and Az had two options, become proportional or loose half their delegates. They chose to loose half their delegates. That was the punishment for staying WTA and going early, which is why Pa will have more delegates than Fl even though Fl has more people and is a stronger Republican state.

Trying to make Fl proportional would be changing the rules after the game, which was the Santorum argument in Mi. And even Romney said he didnt like the Mi Superdelegate vote.

Just remember, every media outlet spins things and will leave out something or distort something to further its goals. And that includes “The Right Scoop.” News today is very much “buyer beware.”

Anyone else remember Newt saying that he was going to “talk” to Santorum right after Mitt’s nasty ads against Newt way back in the beginning of this process?

My hope is that Newt said that both should stay in and whomever is in the front at the end of the day gets all the delegates. That way none of the people would vote for Mitt instead of either of them.

I was afraid we’d never get the chance with all the redistricting shenanigans pushing back the date of voting. But now it looks like we might get to do a winner take all vote. That would be a huge blow to mittens.

I'm so confused on this frustrating situation.

Obama MUST be defeated. On the issues, he hasn't got a leg to stand on. His only hope is our dissension.

If the nomination goes to a brokered convention two things are sure, THREE THINGS are sure (Thanks you Spanish Inquisition!):

1) The results will be unpredictable as the GOP establishment will work to assure a RINO gets nominated behind the scene, regardless.

2) The time to attack Obama will be reduced to two months

3) A convention nominee which have their qualifications questioned.

At this point, it looks grim for a anti-Romney candidate DESPITE the fact that most Republicans REFUSE to give Romney 50% or more.

If Romney get nominated, he will have a hard time fighting Obama due to Bain capitol, his “poor people” comments, his liberal record and the Mormonism thing.

If he IS elected, he will still be light years ahead of Obama - at least he's not a Marxist Muslim foreign traitor.
But he is RINO clear through and will disappoint us is many ways.

Plus, the Ron Paul delegates who are saying they would support Romney over Santurom, they don’t even belong in the Republican Party. Throw them all out, the moderates, the libertarians, ideological purity is more important than stopping Barack Obama from being re-elected.

Thanks for the explanation. It was either/or but not both. I'm starting to believe that the contest may actually be a legitimate race in the first month. As though the party has it's pick from the beginning, but does give the peasants a wack at it for a few weeks. If no one strikes gold, then it's over, and they go with their original pick. I was thinking it was all momentum, but now I see a heavy handicap in favor of the party pick that kicks in early.

Sounds to me like there's a lot of fast and loose estimating going on from the pro Romney crowd.
