College Pepper-Spraying Incident Begs Question: Who Will Pay for 'Free'?

COMMENTARY | Exactly what are our children learning in college these days anyway? On Tuesday, April 3, a group of students at Santa Monica College, a community college, were protesting a proposed fee hike for some of the most popular courses. This led to some arrests and the use of pepper spray by the local police.
According to a report in the Associated Press, the students were chanting, "No cuts, no fee, education should be free." This statement is what makes us wonder about the quality of education among colleges today: Exactly who do these students think will pay for their education? Whether it is the students in Santa Monica or the Occupy Wall Street crowd, it appears these folks haven't learned that somewhere along the line someone has to pay for what they want given to them.

YES! I can help it! Freeloaders suck! Where do they learn this crap?
Stand up, be wise: you got pepper in your eyes.
In order for one person to get something without paying for it, another person must pay for something without getting it.

hey, Here’s the deal you protest - you get sprayed. That’s the way it is.
We won’t have any money to pay for them.
Education is free but going to school to get it costs dearly.
I'll kick in for some pepper spray.
Alright, I gotta admit, that's pretty good. There's at least ONE stinkin' instance where we seem to see eye-to-eye. If there are any others, please don't hesitate to let me know.
And you get what you pay for.
“Where do they learn this crap?”
In their “free” K-12 public education establishments where they are not so much educated as indoctrinated in the communist manifesto. Given that I do agree with them protesting the fee hikes as they are just to ensure that the over feed public union employees at the school get that much more. Time to start trimming the fat at these institutions not raping the students.
FWIIW, this begs no question but does raise one.
Count me in.
Some years ago I had dealings with students and faculty at UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico). I was continually hammered by students with “Yes, but unlike you gringos our education is free”.
I pointed out to them that yes, our top universities are expensive, but the good students are almost always given scholarships if they worked hard.
They didn’t like that at all.
What I saw there told me a lot about why UNAM is still a crappy university.
There are only a couple of Latin American universities that are ranked in the top 100 in the world (UNAM is one, but very low), according to two groups (one in UK, one in China).
Of the top ten universities in the world, according to both surveys, ALL are English speaking, and eight of the ten are American (the other two are, of course, Oxford and Cambridge).
I would pay good money for the chance to pepper spray whiny college leftists.
Think of the fund raising opportunities!
Break cleaner is cheaper and I bet they won’t be back for seconds.
