NBC News producer fired over editing of George Zimmerman 911 call
NYDN ^

Posted on 04/06/2012 9:18:59 PM PDT by MindBender26

An NBC News producer has been fired after a misleading report on the Trayvon Martin case suggested that shooter George Zimmerman was racially motivated.

The edited audio clip from a 911 call implied that Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., shot Martin because he was black.

"This guy looks like he's up to no good. He looks black," according to the clip that aired March 27 on the “Today” show.

A transcript of the actual recording of the call between Zimmerman and the 911 dispatcher shows the version that was aired was significantly modified.

George Zimmerman: "This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about."

911 dispatcher: "O.K., and this guy - is he white, black or Hispanic?"

George Zimmerman: "He looks black."

After critics blasted the segment as misleading, NBC News launched an internal investigation into how the recording was edited, and concluded on April 3 that there had been a mistake.

The unnamed producer, who has been described as experienced, was fired on Thursday. His dismissal was first reported Friday evening by The New York Times, which cited two people familiar with the matter.

NBC News declined to comment about the firing.

There was speculation earlier today that Today show producer Jim Bell might have been the person responsible for the edit, which portrayed Zimmerman as a racist, or having a racial motive in shooting Trayvon Martin. Bell did not respond to a question directed at his Twitter account earlier today.

The Today show’s editorial control policies – which include a script editor, senior producer oversight, and in most cases legal and standards department reviews of material to be broadcast – missed the selective editing of the call, said the NBC executive.

Let’s examine the difference in how the media handled the UK News Corporation hacking scandal versus NBC.

Plenty of bias.

Looking at this photo, I’d say this dude is gay.

I haven’t thought about it because I’m not that type of a person, but seeing that a white dude sided for trayvon, distorted facts just doesn’t sit right. It’s like being a traitor. Maybe it’s all about money. The green stuff. Going Green.

I think if a black dude did it, I’d be more understanding.

Please don’t tell me this guy is a white hispanic. (He may be because he’s not blond).

“Hard to grasp; just what kind of world these people want ‘their’ children growing up in; how vulnerable they want ‘their’ children to be; their families; in light of the hate the MSM has invited, promoted and celebrated .”

The guys in the back room are usually gay, so they could care less what this country looks like once they leave the planet.

If he’s not, he certainly could any drag queen contest. I also find it interesting that the gays came out yesterday in support of Trevon, just as Bell was getting canned.

Brian Williams is still employed? Isn’t he the “managing news editor”?

Don’t worry about the producer, there is a great desire for left wing “news” writers all over New York, D.C., Miami, Chicago, and L.A.

I’d expect a lawsuit of NBC and demand this producer be named and a full investigation. Zimmerman should get as good lawyer on go on the offensive instead of being on defense. Hit them hard since they are trying to destroy him.

CBS TV, west coast, several decades ago. The more I thought about the “oopsie” defense, the sillier it got. Editors never do anything on their own on a video piece because the DGA contract requires supervision by either an associate director or a producer. And, any AD or producer who wasn’t adept at mirroring the desires of the suits wouldn’t last long enough to be “experienced”. This was just a direct reflection of corporate culture.

The nets had the monopoly on the tools of production, the means of distribution, and the money to buy the talent. All mostly gone now. Having the sole credible news division could be a life saver for one of them, but I doubt any is willing to sacrifice ideology to save themselves. So what we’ll see is the normal network response, the ritual assigning of blame, as they go down the tubes.

Come to think of it, there’s probably a great opportunity to produce an honest news network via streaming internet right now. We’re just about at the technological point cable was at when CNN came along, and God knows there’d be a market for truth.

” without releasing a name, there is no proof they fired anybody...”

If a name doesn’t leak out and verified over the next couple of days, then nobody got fired.
