An NBC News producer has been fired after a misleading report on the Trayvon Martin case suggested that shooter George Zimmerman was racially motivated.
The edited audio clip from a 911 call implied that Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., shot Martin because he was black.
"This guy looks like he's up to no good. He looks black," according to the clip that aired March 27 on the “Today” show.
A transcript of the actual recording of the call between Zimmerman and the 911 dispatcher shows the version that was aired was significantly modified.
George Zimmerman: "This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about."
911 dispatcher: "O.K., and this guy - is he white, black or Hispanic?"
George Zimmerman: "He looks black."
After critics blasted the segment as misleading, NBC News launched an internal investigation into how the recording was edited, and concluded on April 3 that there had been a mistake.
The unnamed producer, who has been described as experienced, was fired on Thursday. His dismissal was first reported Friday evening by The New York Times, which cited two people familiar with the matter.
NBC News declined to comment about the firing.

Axed instantly, but only if caught. Names, I don’t want unnamed news producers shaping my world. So lets have his name!!! When he shows up at CNN we will know they are hiring more liars.
I think it was the NBC Producer that discovered Richard Jewell was the Olympic Park bomber.
The mistake was that they got caught at it!
I’d expect a lawsuit of NBC and demand this producer be named and a full investigation. Zimmerman should get as good lawyer on go on the offensive instead of being on defense. Hit them hard since they are trying to destroy him.

CBS TV, west coast, several decades ago. The more I thought about the “oopsie” defense, the sillier it got. Editors never do anything on their own on a video piece because the DGA contract requires supervision by either an associate director or a producer. And, any AD or producer who wasn’t adept at mirroring the desires of the suits wouldn’t last long enough to be “experienced”. This was just a direct reflection of corporate culture.
The nets had the monopoly on the tools of production, the means of distribution, and the money to buy the talent. All mostly gone now. Having the sole credible news division could be a life saver for one of them, but I doubt any is willing to sacrifice ideology to save themselves. So what we’ll see is the normal network response, the ritual assigning of blame, as they go down the tubes.
Come to think of it, there’s probably a great opportunity to produce an honest news network via streaming internet right now. We’re just about at the technological point cable was at when CNN came along, and God knows there’d be a market for truth.
