What Trayvon Martin’s tweets say about him
Miami Herald ^ | 4.08.2012 | Deborah Acosta

A review of the account, which has since been taken down, portrays a typical teenager with a sense of humor and a preoccupation with girls. He is sometimes vulgar when discussing sex, and he often quotes explicit song lyrics.

At times it’s difficult to discern what’s a song lyric and what’s not. How many of Trayvon’s tweets can be taken as literal is up for grabs.

There are certain things that can be gleaned about Trayvon from his tweets:

He loved the films Friday, starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker, and Next Friday, both of which poke fun at street culture. He posted YouTube clips from the films.

“...known as “Slimm””

Ahem...I don’t believe that was his Twitter name.

I am wondering about teens. I think it was Friday, there was a story about a boy who stabbed his mother because she didn’t accept he was homosexual.

Then the next day we read about a teen who choked and stabbed his mom over curfew disagreement, then stashed her body for a couple of days, dumping powder and such on her body to cut down on smell. Oh, and he had a little party with his dead mother there, too.

Then a few months back there was the kid who killed his parents in(Oakland? San Fran?) over the time he was spending at Occupy. Stuffed them in the car.

Another guy but he was 26, killed his grandmother and dad, covered dad on the patio and had a party with his dead family at the house.

Look at all the kids trying to copy the movie Project X with the HUGE party and destruction that they are causing in doing it.

If you believe the article (which may be a stretch), it implies those were fake ‘grills’...which he put on to take a photo in.....and heck, its thug chic.

If you look at the pictures from when he was 14 say that he had some nice looking teeth. How does one have such poor dental hygiene in three years as to require six GOLD caps? And who paid for those gold caps and who signed for the work to be performed on a minor?

Those aren't caps, but rather a clip on arrangement that covers the teeth. Prices range from absurdly expensive down to around $30.00. This stuff was started by the rappers who had real gold caps put on their teeth, apparently just to show off their money. Some of these "grilles" (grillz) are just as expensive, but Trayvon's looked like cheap costume jewelry for the mouth.

I think there are companies that sell these things online - you just send them a bite impression, or something like that.

It is indeed the mark of a young thug-in-training... and it's not limited to the black community.

I’m not sure what Martin’s tweets have to do with anything.

Whether or not the tweets paint Martin in a bad light, the unrelated twitter activity is irrelevant concerning that fatal night. I don’t care if the guy had a rap sheet. The only things that matter are limited to a handful of minutes. I’m confident the evidence, testimony, and forensics will paint an accurate depiction of what transpired.

Even if there were tweets about drugs and violence, doesn’t necessarily mean anything on the internet.

A lot of kids pimp themselves up without doing anything like that at all.

We’re always interested in newbie opinions. What is your opinion on Martin’s truancy issues. the vandalism, the marijuana baggie, and the woman’s jewelry that automagically ended up in his backpack along with a large screwdriver.

When questioned by police, Martin didn’t know how that stuff got into his backpack. I don’t know about you but I gave up on the tooth fairy long ago. Do you think there’s a jewelry fairy running around giving out women’s jewelry as prizes for quasi-thug behavior?

““What Trayvon Martin’s tweets say about him”

I think it speaks volumes more about his how he was parented. No respect for anyone.

“For instance, a few days before he was killed, Trayvon was suspended from school for ten days.

Still, Trayvon had nonviolent behavioral issues in school, and on the day he was killed, he had been suspended for 10 days from Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in North Miami-Dade. “He was not suspended for something dealing with violence or anything like that. It wasn’t a crime he committed, but he was in an unauthorized area [on school property],” Martin said, declining to offer more details. Before that, Trayvon attended Miami Carol City High School near his mother’s home in Miami Gardens.

There has been very little follow-up in investigating exactly why Trayvon was suspended for such a long period of time for what seems to be the relatively minor offense of “being in an unauthorized area.” In most schools, something like that would be a detention, or one-day, in school suspension at most. Not ten days.”

With the baggie, the pipe, the unexplained jewelry, the vandalism, the screw driver, truancy, etc. Martin’s efforts to fit in with his homies strikes me as being off in a different direction than the earnest high school student thinking about college.

The fact that his mother didn’t want him hanging out with his friends while he was suspended for ten days makes me wonder how many of his friends are still in school.

I don’t know how many other communities you belong to, but in many of them, like Facebook or Twitter, many of the kids, who use words like, “yes ma’am” or “ no sir”, when speaking face to face will suddenly speak like gangsta’s or thugs on the internet.

It’s just a way, usually harmless, of exploring the bad side, without actually being on the bad side of town.

...suspended for ten days ...

The only way a school suspends for 10 days is if they intend to expel.

You have a point there, about Trayvon getting stupid and I certainly won’t deny that he appears to be getting sidetracked from a productive and fruitful life.

I was just pointing out the realities of the internet that people routinely say things totally out of character on the internet. That, by itself, is often meaningless.

It is indeed the mark of a young thug-in-training... and it's not limited to the black community.

Mostly it is. city-data.com has demographic and crime stats for every city in the US. Find me a majority black city with a low crime rate. Find me a city that's less than 5% black with a high crime rate. As an exercise, scroll down to the murder stats, then try to guess the demographics.

Violent crime is a black phenomenon in the US.

I believe that Zimmerman was destined for such an encounter

Hmmmm. You can deduce that from what little is known about him? But Trayvon's grillz, dope, hip hop culture, and hoodies are normal? Jesse Jackson, is that you?

A lovely child.... From his tweets:

DOG, Y U NO EAT MY HOMEWORK?” and “GHETTO GIRL NAMED SHANEKAQUELA, Y U NO GET NORMAL NAME?”

“Wuld I miss Krop?? Hell na f** da skool, f** da lunch, nd most of all f** da faculty….. Ima miss sum of da students, mainly da babies ;)”

He often stayed up late at night waiting for girls to call or text. In one exchange, he singles out a girl to say he stayed up until 1 a.m. waiting for her call, to which she replied, “I did too call u at 12:18 !!!!!!”

Most of his tweets revolved around girls and sex.

“I’m READY for a REAL relationship I’m talking mama meetin and all,” he said on Jan. 8, almost two months before his death.

He often retweeted Twitter account @iTeachSEXOLOGY, with tips on the physical acts of sex

Like I said, a lovely child!

I think that his chances of living a long life were pretty normal.

Perhaps you might not be aware of it, but drugs, burglar tools, stolen jewelry and the inability to construct a simple declarative sentence without the word f**k in it are not considered "normal" in many Western cultures.
