Shot NYPD cops luckier than police first realized —suspect Nakwon Foxworth had assault rifle in apt

Four cops shot inside a Brooklyn apartment would likely have been killed if the ex-con had reached for another weapon in his arsenal —a sawed-off assault rifle with military-grade bullets.

After the smoke cleared from the Easter Sunday gun battle, police found a Ruger Mini-14 known as a “poor man’s assault rifle.” It was loaded with bullets powerful enough to penetrate the ballistics shield Detective Kenneth Ayala carried into the apartment to protect the cops as they entered single file behind him.

Suspect Nakwon Foxworth, who was critically wounded in the shootout, fired a dozen shots from a 9-mm. handgun, but was steps away from the rifle.

“Foxworth was shot before he could reach for his sawed-off assault rifle. And a good thing, too,” said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. “It was loaded with 20 .223-caliber bullets, the kind the military uses.” Kelly couldn’t help but consider the worst-case scenario. “He could have done a lot more damage with an assault weapon he had no business possessing,” the city’s top cop said.

Yup, that “sawed-off” Mini-14 was REALLY scary looking in the photos! The perp fitted it with an after market Choate folding stock (and removed the butt stock). He then cutoff the barrel just ahead of the gas block and the whole thing was topped with a scope having a 50 or 52mm objective. Now exactly what the perp thought he was going to hit with this rig is difficult to tell. Under the best of circumstances, the Mini-14 is NOT a tack-driving rifle and less so with a chopped barrel. The 20 round magazine really makes this rig look scary to the NYPD and NYC media pukes. Serious shooters take one look and laugh themselves silly.

ooooowwwwww. Military-grade bullets. Those are really scary. Their only purpose is to kill people. Run for the hills. They use them in those assualt rifles like the mini 14. LOL

Perhaps in NYC a rifle that retails for ~$700 is for a "poor man."

****with military-grade bullets. ****

I’m glad I set my coffee down before I read this. I would have spewed all over my computer.

Military FMJ bullets are banned from hunting because they are NOT DEADLY ENOUGH.

Hunting bullets are banned by the rules of war as being TOO DEADLY.

Both would punch right through a vest.

A question: Did Ray Kelley wet himself when he talked about the “assault” rifle?

We had Mini-14. It was a POS. Talk about inaccurate. Thats with a full barrel. Saw it off and who knows where the shot will go.

There’s not a pickup cab in North Dakota that doesn’t have a Ranch Rifle in it somewhere.

Ruger completely redesigned the Mini-14 & 30 a few years ago. Both in the gun itself and how it was made.

The new ones are indeed accurate.
