Newt Gingrich Issues Statement on Santorum’s Departure, Tells Mike Huckabee He’ll ‘Finally Get to Be 1-on-1 With Romney’

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was just on the Mike Huckabee Radio show, and commented on Santorum suspending his own presidential campaign just moments ago. On the show, Gingrich discussed finally getting to be ’1-on-1′ with Romney, how he will campaign going forward, and a possible debate in North Carolina with the current front-runner.

Below are some highlights from Huckabee’s interview with Gingrich:

“I did not get a heads up in advance. We have been talking for two weeks, and I knew this was a real possibility in his mind. I do know that he had begun to realize that when you are up against all of Wall Street, it is very difficult. The money machine makes it difficult to have a competitive race.”

“I am not focused on going after Romney; I want to focus on the issues and Barack Obama. I will admit it was a slugging match in Florida; people who like me don’t want me down in the gutter. We will see what Governor Romney decides. I am going to focus on the Republican platform and why Obama is a grave threat to this country.”

“Our folks are making calls to undecideds and those for Rick [Santorum]; we have been talking to someone in North Carolina, and there may be a debate [...] between Romney and me. I would like to have an open dialogue – just the two of us, a chat.”

Here is the full statement released by Gingrich’s press secretary:

This “should” cause the media to focus more on Newt if nothing else buy by default that he’s still in it.

OTOH, they may just continue to ignore him and keep lifting the crown to Mitt.

I believe Newt is going to be interviewed by Hannity (radio) in a little while. I didn’t catch all the details.

Rush said it could be because Newt wouldn’t drop out (and Rick knew he couldn’t win unless that happened).

Newt, your ego may have given us Romney, and then 4 more years of Obama. No Republican presidential candidate has won in the last century + against an incumbent except for Ronald Reagan, a CONSERVATIVE.

That's certainly what I'm watching. They're just ignoring that Newt has not withdrawn and has repeatedly stated he is in this to Tampa.

Rush speculated toward the end of his show that Rick may have felt the others would not join him in a coalition in Tampa. He didn't say what you just wrote.

Didn’t Flip Flop?

Please, I can show you the 1/2 BILLION dollar tunnel supposedly conservative Santorum made sure was built to bribe unions for his last election, don’t give me flip flop.

I know Santorum, if you think he’s a beacon of integrity you are ill informed.

He’s great at telling people what they want to hear, and then doing the exact opposite and making up stuff, regardless of the facts.

Santorum did to this election the same thing he’d done repeatedly over his political career, advanced himself at the expense of what was the right thing to do.. and when it no longer worked, ran away.

You think he just decided to quit now? No, he decided to quit because the polling internals showed he’d lose PA, and that would end his political career completely.

Santorum does, and always has done what Santorum thinks is right for SANTORUM. If your goals and his align, good for you, if they don’t, enjoy being run over.

The GOP loses this election, the only people to blame are the GOP voters, they have through repeatedly foolish actions, ensured us a loss, even if Romney wins, America loses this election.

“I wouls say a gingrich-Romney debate should be MANDATORY at this point”

Agree!

The elites are all over the place crowning Romney but it’s not over for Newt. I’m not yet giving up... still hoping & praying for a challenge at the convention if need be.

RNC neutrality challenged on Romney…… “The list of specific grievances ranges from issues that even the party acknowledges are legitimate, to those that they dismiss as desperate fixations from Romney’s flailing rivals.

For example, the committee agrees that some states that went for Romney jumped the line in the primary schedule, a violation of party rules. But RNC defenders shrug off other complaints, like that they undercut Santorum and Gingrich by formatting a delegate tracking list to pad Romney’s tally, by forming a fundraising alliance this week with Romney and by highlighting a rule that would block an unlikely path to the nomination for Gingrich....... ”….

Newt Gingrich is going after unpledged delegates - that haven't committed in primaries - including upcoming PA (72), and already completed MT (26) and (IL (69) delegates, since these delegates remain unpledged regardless of primary vote.

AND though there are going to be some “winner take all” primaries, the following contests are also on the schedule:

RI (16) proportional
NY (92) proportional
WVA (28) proportional -- elect delegates (who list their presidential pick on ballot)
NC (52) proportional
OR (25) proportional
AK (33) proportional
KY (42) proportional
TX (155) proportional
CA (169) proportional (by district)
NM (20) proportional
SD (25) proportional

The Green Papers

There there are the Contested delegates: …. “delegates have to be "uncontested" in order to count. The frontrunner's rivals argue some of the states that awarded Romney all of their delegates violated Republican National Committee rules when they moved their contests ahead of April 1 and therefore should distribute delegates proportionally. This dispute, if it continues, would not be ruled on until the August convention in Tampa.

"All the media counts right now give him all of Florida, which is against the rules, all of Arizona, which is against the rules, and all of Idaho," Gingrich said Monday. "Those are all three proportional states and they should only be counting his share. So he has to win 1,144 uncontested delegates."

FL: 50 delegates
ID: 32 delegates
AZ: 29 delegates

Remember when I said anything could and would happen in this election the next few months? Well, this is an example.

Santorum is out and Gingrich is still in. Romney is a national socialist, a fascist, and the furthest type of statesman Conservative Republicans can imagine running as their candidate.

Sun, you can keep whining about “ego” or you can help get Romney defeated. Gingrich had nothing to do with Romney running for the Republican candidacy, nor did he “give” Romeny anything.

Newt Gingrich is pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment and loves America and understands its citizens. As a historian, he thoroughly knows the U.S. Constitution and our nation’s history.

He allied himself with Ronald Reagan to build the Reagan Coalition, the Religious Right, and the Republican majority (together the Reagan Revolution) which directly led the downfall of the Soviet Union, the Contract with America, government reforms, less government, tax cuts, a balanced budget, and the great, long-standing Reagan economy.

Washington is broken, it doesn’t work the way it is supposed to and Newt said, if elected, he will work to change the way Washington, D.C., does business.

Even if you're right about Santorum’s reasons, please don't say things like that. Not today. We need to do whatever we can to stop Romney and that job is now tremendously more difficult.

I've been saying for months that I can live with Gingrich but prefer Santorum. I now have an extremely difficult task to try to convince Santorum supporters who I have known for years, and who were elected by our county caucus as Santorum delegates, to vote at the district and state levels for Gingrich.

Newt Gingrich reached out to Santorum supporters today. I appreciate that. His statement was gracious and I want to affirm his efforts.

I hope Gingrich's supporters are equally gracious.

UNLIKE Rick and Mitt, Newt Gingrich didn't rest on his laurels complaining about the liberal political landscape of his state. Newt CHANGED the political landscape in GA (as he did in Washington), brought Democrats into the party, rallied people to get involved in politics -- all by pushing conservatism.

________________________________________

"ATLANTA — It wasn't so long ago that the Republican Party in Georgia was just an afterthought, and Democrats were in firm control of all the levers of state government. Back then, Newt Gingrich and other die-hard GOP stalwarts ventured across the state with the far-fetched message that Republicans could reverse the tide.

Now with commanding majorities in the Statehouse and control of all statewide offices, Gingrich is hoping his vision for how the GOP could overcome decades of Democratic dominance in Georgia will pay dividends. He sorely needs a victory when his home state votes Tuesday, along with a big chunk of its 76 delegates, to prove his stumbling presidential bid has staying power.

Many Republican figures in Georgia still credit him with championing conservative policies, outlining a framework for what a GOP majority in the state could accomplish and broadcasting talking points to a generation of up-and-coming conservative leaders. He's also applauded for lobbying conservative Democrats, like then-Rep. Nathan Deal, to switch parties.

"Everyone else was trying to lose as slowly as possible, and to die with dignity at the Alamo. He was talking confidently that the Republican majority in Georgia, in the South and nationally was right around the corner," said Ralph Reed, a veteran Georgia GOP operative who founded the national Faith and Freedom Coalition. "On the one hand it was crazy, but on the other it was just the most exciting thing you've ever heard.".....................In Ga., Gingrich helped build conservative base

This certainly is interesting primary turbulence.

Something needs to shake — Mitt knows a lot of conservatives will be looking at Newt.

I wonder, what will Drudge put up on his “Romney” web page next?
