Baltimore's top cop warned Tuesday against "race-baiting" amid rising tensions across the nation, citing the Trayvon Martin case and cautioning that a video generating outrage on the Internet of a tourist being beaten and stripped in downtown Baltimore does not appear to depict a hate crime.
Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III, appearing on WBAL's "The C4 Show," said the attack on a 31-year-old white man from Arlington, Va., appears to be nothing beyond "drunken opportunistic criminality." The comment came in response to a caller who said that if the victim had been black and the assailants white, civil rights leaders would be descending on Baltimore and the attackers would be charged with a hate crime.
Bealefeld, the white police commissioner in majority-black Baltimore, warned against "fear-mongering."
"There's no doubt it's a crime," he said. "We need to vigorously hold criminals accountable, and we have to be careful not to be pulled into this race-baiting.
"I want to caution people, because I think there will be ample national noise as we progress through the Trayvon Martin and the [Oklahoma shooting] cases," Bealefeld said. "As these things get going, I will urge caution of Baltimoreans to distinguish between criminality and racially motivated crime."
Protests continue over the killing of Martin, an unarmed teen shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla. A prosecutor said this week that the case would not go before a grand jury. The mayor has called his town a "kindling box," with the New Black Panther Party offering a bounty for the shooter's capture and reports of neo-Nazis on patrol. In Oklahoma, several people were killed in a shooting rampage that authorities say might have been race-based retribution.

Of course, ‘drunken opportunistic criminality’, see it’s fun. Not like those vicious hate crimes that must be abolished with draconian measures. Some crimes are ‘hate’ crimes and some crimes are ‘fun’ crimes, regardless if the end result is assault and robbery.

The very concept of a hate crime is absurd. Are we saying that these thugs loved this tourist while they were beating and robbing him? Calling a crime a hate crime is just an excuse for Jesse and Al to get in front of a camera.
Black criminals attacking a single white guy. NOt a hate crime. Proof the baltimore police chief is on crack.
If we are going to have bad law such as hate crime laws, they must be applied equally. Until we have the bad law removed. It’s the only chance we have at getting it repealed, if EVERYONE can be affected by it.
When I go out with the intention of getting plowed, I leave the $1300 watch at home. I also don’t leave a bar in a town like Balt’more (the “i” is silent) without at least 3 of my friends.

Now you know why I left Baltimore a long time ago.
THe sad thing is I had a good relationship with the Baltimore PD in the late 60’s/early 70’s when I was a journalist covering the Black Panther Party murder of Officer Sager. The head of the CID was a black major who was a real professional police officer.
Baltimore is now a black cesspool of crime and hate, yet I know that there are thousands of decent black people who are suffering just as much from the black criminals as are the white, if not more so.
Who speaks for them? Former Mayor Kurt Schmoke once did but he has been bought off. THe same for Gov/former Mayor Martin O’Malley. Dixon - in jail. The new mayor - don’t know her but the city is still a shithole.
Old Donald Schaeffer tried, but the black political machines undercut him.
I go back as far as Mayor McKeldin, one true liberal gentleman who oversaw integration in a calm and sensible manner.
What we have today in Baltimore are Democratic party hacks, shisters, crooks, cronies, and incompetents. Everyone suffers fromt their presence in government, and the bodies keep piling up.
