WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO, April 10 (Reuters) - The Justice Department could sue Apple Inc as early as Wednesday over alleged electronic book price-fixing, while settling with several publishers as early as this week, two people familiar with the matter said.

The Justice Department is investigating alleged price-fixing by Apple and five major publishers: CBS Corp's Simon & Schuster Inc; HarperCollins Publishers Inc; Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group; Pearson and Macmillan, a unit of Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH.

A lawsuit against Apple, one of the parties not in negotiations over a potential settlement, could come as early as Wednesday but no final decision had been made, the people said.

The Clinton administration did the same thing for money. Fair share becomes extortion by the government....Jessie Jackson makes a business of this. Holder won't clean up his own department but will like Janet Reno, will carry the water bucket for Obama with no hesitation....he belongs behind bars for his brand of racism, cronyism, and crimes against the citizens of this nation.

Are you sure the socialist that loves to work is better than the socialist that hates to work? Nice touch with the stalking though.

"Price fixing is bad because.... OK, I’m at a loss.

I guess there are no alternatives to Apple products."

I believe it is "media" (electronic books) they are accused of price fixing. Not their iGadgets.

This has to do with Media sold on iTunes.

Are you sure that ignoring reality is better than ignoring fantasy?

No stalking. I simply wanted you to know when I used your name. Beats talking about you behind your back.

You threaten me, whine, and cry, then you’re surprised when I mention you? Why?

“I threatened you?”

wolfman23601: “This isn’t the place for Romneybots.”

Not a personal existential threat, more of a banning threat. Not that I’m worried, but it did annoy me. I despise group think. Liberals live by group think. FR has been a place of intelligent exchange of ideas, not an echo chamber. If group think is required here, no need to ban me, I don’t want to be here.

has anyone considered this may be a valid issue since apple actually did conspire with publishers to “get amazon”

Then let lawyers sue in a class action lawsuit on behalf of customers.

Personally - if I think something is too high - I dont buy it. I don’t run to Obama/Holder to sue a company because I think the prices are too high.

Its very simple. Either markets are free or they are not. Conservatives are usually believers in Free Markets.

A Market isn't "free" if their is collusion to fix prices between those folks who sell in that market.

If all the major publishers agreed to set a minimum price for a book then this is the very definition of Price fixing and the Obama admin SHOULD nail their ass to a wall.

While they are at it they should investigate the RIAA who have been price fixing CDs for years.

Last month there was a discussion of a WSJ article on this: U.S. Warns Apple, Publishers. That discussion focused on Apple and the publishers allegedly colluding to eliminate Amazon's $9.99 max price on eBooks. One company deciding on prices, even unreasonable ones, is legal. A company colluding with its suppliers to punish a competitor isn't legal.

Yep sad thing is many on FR were glad to see DOJ take on Microsoft. But when they come after their preferred IT company I think they will be singing a different tune.

Disgusting.

Really?
You either don't know the details of the case or are indifferent to the reasons price-fixing is illegal in the first place.

Even an idiot in chief and a stopped clock can be "right on" twice a day.

Shhhh.
Don't say anything. This is fun.

Watching the ignorants' knees jerking all over the place is actually entertaining.
A little learning is a dangerous thing, and most of the responses up to here are totally clueless about the actual issue.

Let me just go get some popcorn.
