Remington responds to NBC hit piece
Daily Caller ^ | 12 April 2012 | unattributed

From Remington Arms to The Daily Caller

NBC continues to attack Remington and the firearms industry through sensational and factually inaccurate reporting. On April 11, 2012, Brian Williams again demonstrated NBC’s anti-gun agenda with the claim that the Model 870, Model 1100 and other Remington firearms have a design flaw. That claim is demonstrably false and Remington stands fully behind the safety and reliability of the most popular shotguns in the world.

It wasn’t enough for NBC to attack over 20 million Remington firearms; they also called the Second Amendment into question by suggesting that there is a need for increased government regulation of firearms.

Model 870 and 1100 owners know the truth – these shotguns are used extensively under the most demanding conditions. Tens of billions of rounds have been fired through these firearms, which are valued for their performance and durability by millions of hunters, shooters, law enforcement and military personnel who have relied on Remington.

As the basis for its attacks, NBC continues to rely upon paid “experts” who have been repeatedly hired by plaintiff’s attorneys to testify against Remington and at least 16 other firearms manufacturers. The facts show that the Model 870 and 1100 are two of the most reliable shotguns ever produced – only one lawsuit has been filed in the last seven years and no litigation is pending against the trigger mechanisms of these firearms.

Don’t Rely on Your Gun’s Safety.

Treat every gun as if it can fire at any time, whether or not there’s pressure on the trigger. Your firearm has been carefully designed to maximize performance and safety. However, because a gun’s safety is a mechanical device, it could fail.

Human error is a more likely reason for a gun safety to fail. By mistake, you may think the safety is on when it really isn’t. Or the safety may have been disengaged without your knowledge. Or you could think your gun is unloaded when there’s actually a cartridge or shell in it. A mechanical safety is not a substitute for common sense. It’s merely a supplement to your proper handling of a firearm.

Never touch the trigger on a firearm until you are ready to shoot. Keep your fingers away from the trigger when you’re loading or unloading. And don’t pull the trigger when the safety is engaged or positioned between safe and fire.

Before using your gun, read this instruction book to understand the exact location and operation of your firearm’s safety. Even when the safety is on, maintain control of your loaded firearm and control the direction of the muzzle. In other words, don’t rely on your safety to justify careless handling. If your firearm’s internal mechanisms are broken or have been altered, your firearm may fire even when the safety is on. Remember, you and your safe gun handling practices are your gun’s best safety.

Any FReepers ever have a problem with their Remington shotgun safety?

Don’t forget - NBC is the outfit that edited the George Zimmerman 911 tape to make him sound bad, and also sabotaged the pickup truck to make it “spontaneously” explode on command.

I'm surprised they didn't load one up with dynamite and blow it up.

All guns are always loaded.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

The best fix for a Remington 870 is a Mossberg 590A1.

Personally, I dislike the trigger guard safety on my 870. I’ve missed more than a few good shots at foxes and other predators, because I just grab the gun chamber a round aim and pull the trigger, which doesn’t fire, because I forgot to push the bloody safety button.

I like the tang safety on my Mossberg MUCH better. It’s right where I can see it, and I can always tell when it’s on or off.

No problems with a Remington because we only have a couple Mossbergs and a Benelli.

How long has the Remington 870 been used? 100 years?

By the Marines, FBI, etc?

Nope. Never. My Remington 870 Wingmaster is the best shotgun I've ever owned.

I never use the safety on my 870 or any other firearm because I NEVER have a round in the chamber until I am ready to shoot.

And remarkably, in 45 years of shooting, I have never had a gun go off accidentally.

NBC, long ago, ceased to be a serious and honest reporter of news. Who watches Brian “Makes Ted Baxter look like a MENSA member” Williams? They are the worst of a pathetic few.

I like the tang safety too but overall the Remington 870 is probably the best pump shotgun ever made.

BTW, the Mossberg safety used to break so often, our local dealer always kept a large supply of replacements on hand.

I am sure Mossberg has corrected the problem by now but it never should have happened in the first place.

This is exactly how I operate my guns and no problem. If I need to shoot something the last thing I want to worry about is fumbling around with the safety.

Nope, my Remington 870 has never failed me, never misfed, never had a trigger issue. In addition to hunting, it’s my home defense weapon. You don’t make firearms like the 870 for as long as Remington has if there was a design flaw. The flaw is the human operators who don’t respect the firearm or don’t practice safe handling rules.

I have 1187, 1100 and 3 870’s. Never a problem. Use the 1187 for sporting clays, trap and hunting, over 60,000 rounds..not a problem. Had to replace the o-rings a couple of times but not a problem.

fact: more people are killed by empty guns than loaded ones ( I didn’t know it was loaded )... the firearm is ALWAYS loded until you verify it for yourself..

I actually try to watch Brian Williams a couple times a week, just to keep up on his bias, how he turns things around, turns every event into some historic tragedy. I would not watch if my children were young and lived at home, because I am known to yell at the TV when he’s on, and the language is not something for children to hear. But since MANY people are likely to watch NBC news, I like to keep track of the twists and turns in their “journalism”.
