New York needs a microstamping law to combat gun violence
NY Daily News ^ | april 13, 2012

New York must require microstamping of all semiautomatic handguns —the criminals’ weapon of choice —that are made or sold in the state.

Manufacturers would etch a number on each gun’s firing pin, which would stamp that number onto the shell casing when the weapon is fired. Two years ago, California passed a similar law that has yet to take full effect.

If microstamping were in force, shell casings found at crime scenes would become calling cards —easily traced back to the gun that shot them and, therefore, to its registered owner.

The technology in no way interferes with anyone’s Second Amendment rights. Hunting rifles would not be affected at all. And why should a law-abiding handgun owner care if his or her shell casings bear an identifying mark?

Meanwhile, microstamping would give a powerful tool to police —who regularly discover shell casings that traditional ballistic fingerprinting can’t trace.

Up against these common-sense arguments, the gun nuts have gone ballistic in Albany.

...Hunting rifles would not be affected at all..

What, exactly, is a "hunting" rifle in these idiots minds?

It isn’t about reducing crime. It is about further limiting 2A rights through increased costs, registering ammunition and/or firing pins, etc. They don’t want to reduce crime; they want to take away your guns.

Isn’t the bigger flaw in the plan that no crime has been solved with micro stamping?

Remember the Canadian gun registry program. It was sold as the same. It will solve crimes... Zero where solved. It also quickly grew to a massively expensive program.

I’m just guessing but I figure 75% plus of the gun crimes are committed with stolen handguns, or guns not registered to the criminal.

And what is this supposed to do for revolvers?

Nothing bigger than a Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle! (Chambered in .177) I would imagine. Anything larger is a high-powered sniper weapon.

Picking up a number of casings at a gun range to throw down at a crime scene would drive the prosecutors crazy.

Please!Don’t give these government idiots any ideas. They’ll make it a felony to leave any used casing on the floor of the range.

Much easier way to ban guns that way.You get arrested for polluting the environment with used cartridge cases then your denied your second amendment rights because you committed a previous crime.

Duh!!! What’s to keep a relatively smart criminal from going to a range, picking up a few hand fulls of spent shells and leaving them at the scenes of his crimes, thereby framing one or more innocent people?

Somewhere I remember NY OR NYC require the MFG to include a shell case with the gun for the same purpose as the micro stamp would be.

My new HK45 had a spend cartridge in the box when I brought her home.

Am I correct to assume polishing the firing pin would be illegal?

In order to make this law work, they'd have to force manufacturers to build guns that make access to the firing pin difficult or impossible. That would require a redesign of almost all existing semiauto guns, and may actually be impossible in many designs. They would also have to have some sort of tamper indicator system. Obviously, this law would be rough on gunsmiths, but I don't think they care.

Remington Arms has a factory at Ilion, NY. And, Bushmaster has moved much of it’s production there.

Imagine your a New York City liberal with your nose permanently high in the air and you discover whats left of manufacturing in upstate New York is notably guns. They intend to drive this unsubsidized industry out of the state. It will be replaced with some giant subsidy for some folly that will be gone in a decade, like nano chips and Global Foundries (1.4 billion in subsidies and climbing).

And of course, ALL criminals who use a semi-automatic are licensed gun owners and acquired their piece from a licensed dealer and registered it appropriately via Form 4473.

And of course the firing pin has never been replaced.

Morons.

Many manufacturer's include a spent cartridge case with a new firearm. It is simply to show the weapon has been test fired at the factory before delivery. There is no identifying marking on the firing pin.

STUPID.

I can buy extra firing pins for ANY rifle or pistol I own.

New York can kiss my unstamped firing pin.

Current production Bushmaster AR-15 lowers are stamped as produced in “Ilion, NY”.

You know, these are the scary black guns rarely if ever used in crime, but these might be used in a crime. New York City leberals sustain themselves on the narrative that all gun problems are caused by car trunk sales from buck toothed locals in South Carolina or southward. They can’t have guns stamped “Ilion, NY”...it screws up the narrative.

New York would be better off if they allowed citizens to own guns. Now the only folks armed are criminals...
