Al Sharpton, power player
Washington Post ^ | April 13, 2012 | by Dana Milbank

The Rev. Al Sharpton is lord of all he surveys.

“Check out this,” the flamboyant civil rights leader told me during breakfast at his organization’s annual meeting this week. He flipped through the program until he found a full-page ad with the logos of Fox News, the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal. “News Corporation Proudly Supports National Action Network’s 2012 Convention,” it said.

Sharpton grinned. “They bash me on Fox News,” he said. “But they sponsor my conference.”

Everybody wants to be on Sharpton’s good side these days. No fewer than five Cabinet officers and a senior White House official went to this year’s convention to kiss his ring. President Obama spoke at last year’s conference and has sought Sharpton’s advice on policy.

Just hours before the announcement that George Zimmerman would be charged with second-degree murder, Martin’s parents held a joint news conference with Sharpton — and a few hours before that, Attorney General Eric Holder, also at the convention, praised Sharpton for his “tireless efforts to speak out for the voiceless, to stand up for the powerless.”

It was confirmation that Sharpton has pulled off one of the rarest second acts in American public life: from pariah to power player.

Every time this POS shows up on TV, Obama loses 1,000 white voters and Fox News loses 1,000 viewers.

Keep it up, “Reverend”; you have replaced Jesse Jackson as the “King Of All Blacks”.

He may be a powah playah but you’ve got to remember, it’s a lot easier to bull**** Americans these days than it was when the majority of Americans had an education and a lot of common sense.

Well-stated. I quit watching anytime the serial-lyin', race-baitin' POS showed up on any program a long time ago. Any media that enables him can rot in hell.

Thanks for that link, Steelfish. I heard about that. It is about about as disgusting as “government” can get.

I never watched Fox News again after seeing him as a guest, and referred to as “reverend”; that eliminated any doubt in my mind that the Republicans & Democrats are the same party, and all politics are just bread & circuses. I still vote every election, because at least the Republicans haven’t openly declared war on Catholics or “Euro-Americans” yet, but I don’t know that it even matters. Local elections probably have more of a bearing on my daily life anyway; the $7K+ I pay in property taxes is much more than I pay in income taxes.

Whether or not Sharpton manages occasionally stumbles onto a real injustice—I don’t know, a broken clock is right twice a blah, blah, blah-—let’s get a couple of things straight:

1. What do you think, he listens to police blotters, scours the internet, and keeps his ears to the streets? Maybe once, but no more. No, he’s a bandwagon jumper. He gets on board after they’ve already become notorious scandals. Perhaps he and Jesse represent some sort of critical mass moment, when stories tip into hypercoverage. But no, that’s not true. Oftentimes they fizzle out. It’s just that when they don’t, and when they become runaway trains full of radioactive waste headed for Anywhere, USA, Sharpton gets the credit. When they fizzle out, people forget without it hurting him.

Well, actually it does hurt him, gradually eroding more and more of his reputation. His sort of grandstanding does have diminishing returns, even when he’s right. But then comes a Martin/Zimmerman case, and he can live off it for a few more decades.

2. Lots of times, for instance in this case, he’s wrong. They aren’t actual injustices, and all he does is waste our time/commit slander.

The fact Al Sharpton has a TV show on a major cable news outlet is proof positive just how sick and degenerate our culture has become... In past times he would be the doorman in some rich apartment housing and a part time gig preaching in a small black church every Sunday....putting on his weekly show of spoof righteousness

So, Hannity is still having his “good friend” on his show. Hannity is a POS motormouth fake as far as I’m concerned. And so is Fox. They faked me out for a lot of years. But no more.

Dana Milbank proves that you can stick a vacuum cleaner hose up your nose, suck your brains out, bleat like a goat and still get a job at the Washington Post.
