Imagine taking him for walkies! George the Great Dane is 7ft long . . . [reduced for space]
U. K. Daily Mail ^ | April 15, 2012 & July 23, 2011 | Dave Nasser

"Imagine taking him for walkies! George the Great Dane is 7ft long, weighs 18st and is the world's biggest dog... but he's terrified of chihuahuas" (Full Title)

The first time we saw George, our beloved Great Dane, he was no more than a tiny, cowering ball of fuzzy fur.

As my wife Christie opened the door of the crate he’d travelled in, he teetered to a standing position and looked out at us, moving his head slowly from side to side, taking in the wonder of it all.

Finally, as if weighing us up and deciding we were acceptable, he tentatively pushed his little nose forward and gave Christie her first lick.

Great story for a day when so many bad things are happening. I'm a Daney daddy as of April 19, 2011, and Canute, my Dane, was delivered to the Knkoxville, TN airport about an hour before we were hit by the great hail storm of 2011.

Not only is this a great article, it's an excerpt from Nasser's full length book about his life with Giant George, which is apprioriately named, Giant George. Just to do some pimping, the book's available on Kindle for $11.99.

Wonderful story. I had to laugh when I read that he was the “runt of the litter”. The runt?!! I wonder if his brother and sisters are bigger or if he just grew exrra-extra large? Thanks for posting, libstripper!

A dog so big that even a headline of a story about him is too big to fit.

The man in the sign would have to be replaced with a front end loader to accommodate that dog!

OH, btw, a crib mattress or twin mattress(?) makes a great Dane bed. Most other large dog beds aren`t big enough. Even with those, those legs just dangle off..lol

Something much like that happens every time I take mine to the vet. There’s something like, “OOOH,” from the multitude followed by all sorts of laughs.

Looks like a young one; she’s still pretty skinny. Mine’s about a year and a month old, weighs about 110 lb., and loooks like I’ve been starving him even though he gets all the premium dog food he wants.

“He’s terrified of chihuahuas.” - rightfully so. I’ve seen a pack of three chihuahuas take down a grizzly bear. Ferocious little beasts.

Denes have a real problem, their feet being so far from their heads. Little dogs can get in and nip their feet very easily.

George is a lot of dog.

My Weimaraners aren't exactly petite, but I'd need a third one to match the total canine poundage.

My husband always has trouble remembering how to pronounce Weimeraner, so he stoppped trying and, without fail, just calls them Ramalamadingdongs. It’s one of the little things I first loved about him lol.

I don't have a Dane, I've got an Irish Setter at about 55#.

When she was a pup she was held like a baby and given PLENTY of lap time.

Its funny now when my 83 year old mother is sleeping in the recliner, Molly climbs up to sleep in her lap or across her legs.

Of course, I don't think my mom would think it was funny if Molly was a 245# Great Dane, wanting lap time.

I've noticed that the pronunciation confounds a lot of folks, even though it's only four syllables. But there is a difference in pronunciation in different countries.

In Germany, where the breed originated (named for the city of Weimar, of course), and in the rest of Europe generally, it's VIE-mah-rah-ner. In the U.S. and Canada, it's usually pronounced WHY-mah-rah-ner.

My best buddy had a Great Dane named “Siegfried” — Siggy for short. Siggy never learned that his tail was connected to him and it was a wagging machine. He cleaned off the coffee table numerous times and was known to have abused the Christmas tree with it. He was tall enough to hit guys with it right in the sweet spot if they weren't on guard; that tail stung!

One day, Siggy was alone in the house and a burglar came calling. The burglar stepped up the back stairs to the kitchen door and punched out a glass panel to get at the door knob. Siggy heard the glass break and came bounding out of the living room to hit the door jamb with his front paws. The would be burglar was now staring eyeball to eyeball with a 150 pound Great Dane. He did the fastest 180 degree turn on the planet — cutting his arm on the broken glass — and lit out for parts unknown. When my buddy's wife returned home about a half hour after the incident, she found Siggy cowering behind the sofa. He thought he'd done something wrong. In reality he saved the house from a burglary.

question — don’t Great Dane’s live very short lives? 7 or 8 years?

chihuahuas are mean dogs. Can’t stand them. Yorkies are passable but most small dogs are badly disciplined. I prefer a mid-sized dog myself

“question — don’t Great Dane’s live very short lives? 7 or 8 years?”

That is what I’ve read, and one of the reasons (besides wife’s objections) that I never got one. It is hard enough losing a dog after 12-14 years, it just tears my heart out.
