CARTAGENA, Colombia — President Barack Obama said Sunday he will be “angry” if there’s truth to reports that Secret Service personnel patronized prostitutes ahead of his visit to an international summit meeting here.
“If it turns out some of the allegations that have been made in the press are confirmed, then, of course, I’ll be angry because my attitude with respect to Secret Service personnel is no different than what I expect out of my delegation sitting here,” Obama said in his first public comments on the incident that occurred at a Cartagena hotel last week.
“We represent the United States. When we travel to another country, I expect them to observe the highest standards because we’re not just representing ourselves. We’re here on behalf of our people and that means we conduct ourselves with the utmost dignity and probity and obviously what’s been reported does not match up with those standards,” Obama said at a joint news conference with the summit’s host, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.
The episode involving Secret Service and members of the military has cast an embarrassing shadow over Obama’s weekend trip to an international summit meeting involving more than 30 leaders from throughout the Americas. Obama said Sunday he expects the Secret Service’s investigation of the incident to be “thorough” and “rigorous.”
The incident also sucked much of the attention away from the rest of the summit, including discussions of the future of Cuba relations, the situation in Iran, drug de-criminalization and even new tensions over the Falkland Islands.
