ABC's Primetime:What Would You Do? strangely attacked conservative talk radio host Michael Savage on Friday for autism views he expressed almost four years ago.

The following was injected into an eight minute segment dealing with how people respond in a public setting when an autistic child acts up (video follows with transcript and commentary):OFF-SCREEN ANNOUNCER: Now if you're finding it hard to believe that anyone would mistake autistic behavior for misbehavior, listen to this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MICHAEL SAVAGE: I'll tell you what autism is in 99 percent of the cases: it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is.

Doc S.’s comments were from 4 years ago.

“and planned to give over his entire show on Monday — broadcast live from Northern California from 3 to 6 p.m., Pacific time — to parents and other callers who wished to disagree with him and to educate him.

And that’s exactly what Savage did, with some callers - including a school psychologist - agreeing with him that autism like so many childhood behavior disorders is overdiagnosed oftentimes for financial reasons”

I was at the Tennessee Aquarium a few years back and there was a family there where a young boy was acting up. At one point he physically attacked his slightly older sister, who just backed up and kind of cowered away from him. I could not help staring and I know I looked shocked. The mom looked at me and screamed that he was autistic (a couple of times). I quit watching, but I felt sorry for the whole group, but especially the girl. It must really stink to have to live with that all the time. Is that kind of aggression common with autistic kids? I think the little boy was around five or so, but he was strong and his blows must have hurt his sister.

“that kind of aggression common with autistic kids?”

That I don’t know, but it seems like this is one of those disablilty diagnoseses that you can get SSI for, and there is a lot of fraud, IMHO.

Yes, that would definitely stink for the sibling.

There was a grocery store once that I worked at that employed a er.. mentally handicapped young man who would sort of get... familiar with customers, even asking if they’d take him home with them... argh...

What a shame Michael Weiner burnt so many bridges among his conservative talk radio peers just to get the liberal audience. Not sure “the golfer”, “Sean Vannity” or “the ‘fake’ lawyer” will have anything special to say on the issue. Maybe the governor of California will run to Weiner’s side, you know - as a payback.

I think he was always more of a pretender. There have been a few fake conservatives on talk radio.

I don't pretend to be any kind of expert. But I have watched a lot of allegedly autistic kids while volunteering at a special school for autistic children. Some kids obviously had something very wrong with them, while others appeared completely normal!

So while I mostly agree with Michael Savage on this, I think he's probably overstating the case. I'd guess around about 50-70% (not 99% as per Savage) of kids claimed to be autistic have been misdiagnosed, or that the word "autistic" is being used as a catch-all term for "we don't know what's wrong with him."

Is this the beginning of the Obama Administration attacks on talk radio, the Michael Savage Front, that Dr. Savage talked about last week?

So let ABC argue with Dr. Stephen Camarata of Vanderbilt University an expert on autism. His studies support what Savage says.

Why are the willingly-ignorant so confident that they have so much "knowledge" of Savage -- especially if that "knowledge" comes from his enemies and the enemies of America?

Why would parents with autistic children be upset with Savage, Dr. Thomas Sowell, Professor Stephen Camarata of Vanderbilt University all of whom are pointing out the problem of misdiagnosed cases?

ABC can check with Dr. Sowell starting here

Don't any of those MSM pukes know how to do the google?

Ever hear of Asperger’s Syndrome?

Didn’t think so.

My son has it. Hang around my house for a day or two and you’ll understand that what appears to be a normal kid - ain’t.

The number of fraudulent claims of autism pales in comparison to the ADD/HD scam.

For years mild autism was seen as just a behavioral issue, medium autism as a learning disability, and severe autism as a physical disability.

Now, even the mildest of autism is a diagnosed disease, and all levels of autism are considered disabling.

The same thing happened with ADD. It used to be mild ADD was called "daydreaming", medium ADD while being male was called "being a boy", and severe ADD was called a learning disability.

Now, even the mildest ADD is a diagnosed disease, complete with prescription psychotropic drugs to treat it.

The first question is, how did we make it all these years with undiagnosed mild autism in our midst? Perhaps their parents kept them under control, and later as adults they did not conform, got into trouble, and ended up in the criminal just system.

Others with mild autism, such as Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Edison just went on about their lives.

The second question is, how will we make it with diagnosed mild autism in our midst? The economic impacts of the medical and disability costs will be large.

The third question is, what will be the impact of multiple generations of people who have spent their childhood years on psychotropic drugs on society?

Probably because Thomas Sowell did not approach the issue with the intentions of shocking the audience for headlines to promote his show. A bit of diplomacy goes a long way.

Huh? He is a legit conservative, and my 2nd favorite radio host. Mark Levin is #1 - ironic considering they can't stand each other. But they both mention illegal immigration frequently, while RINO Hannity rarely does and Rush never does. Savage also raised a ton of $$$ for the defense of the Haditha Marines. Savage was an early basher of G.W. Bush after he tried to push amnesty, and for his pathetic rules of engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many on FR hit him on it, but we later saw he was right.
