WEST PALM BEACH Gov. Rick Scott got a reminder of the worldwide impact of the shooting death of Trayvon Martin at an international business conference here today.
When Scott appeared before a luncheon crowd of about 500 people from 20 different countries at the Palm Beach Strategic Forum, the moderator's first question was about the "serious concerns" that tourists and businesses might have about Florida and its "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law following the Feb. 26 killing of Martin.
Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, was shot in a Sanford gated community by a neighborhood watch volunteer who claims he acted in self-defense.
Scott told the crowd at the Palm Beach County Convention Center that he had met with Martin's parents and "my commitment to them was that justice will prevail."
He told the group that a task force headed by Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll will review Stand Your Ground and other laws. And Scott voiced confidence in special prosecutor Angela Corey of Jacksonville.
"She believes the same way I do. We've got to have justice for Trayvon's family and due process for George Zimmerman," Scott said. "We're doing the right thing, and justice will prevail."
Corey filed second-degree murder charges against Zimmerman last week.
The shooting of Martin, who was black, has heightened racial tensions and drawn attention to the Stand Your Ground law, which allows a person to use deadly force if he or she feels it is necessary to prevent death or bodily harm.
Scott rejected the idea that Corey filed charges in response to public pressure.
"I've known Angela and I don't think Angela gets influenced by things other than what the facts are," Scott told reporters at the convention center.
"She's somebody that cares about victims, she wants due process for everybody involved, she wants to get the facts out. So she makes her decisions based on the facts and what's right," Scott said.
Scott also mentioned that a task force headed by Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll will be reviewing the state's laws, including the Stand Your Ground law.
Scott also spent about an hour speaking with about 30 business leaders at the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches. The governor repeated his calls for lower taxes and less regulation to make Florida more attractive for business and offered to make phone calls to businesses thinking of relocating to the state.
Unadulterated Bovine Scatology!
One year ago the headlines read - Gunned down in Florida
Two ‘fun-loving’ British friends Murdered enjoying a holiday of a lifetime. University friends James Cooper, 25, and James Kouzaris, 24, were murdered in Newtown, a deprived part of the city of Sarasota, in the early hours of Saturday.
The silence is deafening. Nope, no outrage here.
Our daily dose of socialist marxist hypocrisy
Yet . . . we attack our own for not saying to their face and for the lamestream media to record "shove it up their arse." Come on . . . no wonder our cause loses. Walker ain't the enemy. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1377840/James-Cooper-James-Kouzaris-gunned-Florida-holiday-lifetime.html#ixzz1sGSgcEkQ
Oh, it’ll balance out though, since one black black is worth like forty white whites and sixty white hispanics now.
And then a right proper hangin'.
“...worldwide impact of the shooting death of Trayvon Martin...”
Any “impact” is just the CommieMedia reporting on the incessant echo of their own propagandizing.
No civilized person ANYWHERE, gives a crap about the gangsta wanna-be Martin.
Gov. Scott said it just right. He covered both bases.
Trayvon’s family can’t handle justice. They want something else.
Well said. Trayvon already got justice after attacking a good Samaritan.
The Martin Family may not be very accepting of the Justice they and Trayvon will receive. And as for the Governor? He might not like what happens to the rest of his political career, Conservatives loath pandering for votes.
Does this whimp think this is going to get him a ton of votes or something. Republicans have no principals really. They’re just tools.
All they do is spend their days in power worrying about getting the left to love them a little.
Conservatives in FLA need to call his office and remind him of this.
And the funny thing is Zimmerman looks all Hispanic and I would bet identifies himself as such on forms etc.
Yep and look at this:
“Scott also mentioned that a task force headed by Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll will be reviewing the state’s laws, including the Stand Your Ground law. “
Disgusting pandering Republican. No wonder people want a real conservative third party.
Weak ass Governor.
In case we all forget:
Lady justice wears a blindfold, she does not see race, age, fortune, threats, intimidation.....She is blind for a reason.
(Florida government officials need to be reminded by sll of us)
