(CNSNews.com) - Barack Obama's vision as president is shaped by the fact that he knows what "it's like to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit in a grocery store," Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan said last week.
Donovan seemed to be suggesting that the president had once lived in what First Lady Michelle Obama now refers to as a "food desert"--a place without a nearby supermarket. The First Lady has launched an initiative to eliminate these places.
Why has all this work been such a priority for the president and every one of us in the administration? Donovan said. Because he knows what you know: He knows what its like to walk the halls of public housing because hes worked there.
He knows what its like to walk the streets of some of our cities poorest neighborhoods because hes lived there, Donovan said. What its like to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit in a grocery store.
Donovan also said the president had to wonder about whether he could afford a college education or decent health care or be judged unfairly.

She'll conclude it's "typical" evil white people conspiring to deprive "hood" residents of fruit, and her solution will be to force merchants to open money losing branches. Guess what parking lot he had to walk through between home and school every day? The Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children. I remember in Las Vegas when the only Costco was on Martin Luther King Blvd. That really worked out great, when we went to Vegas, one Costco shopping trip was more than enough for us. Costco then wised up and built a store out in the suburbs. Don't know if the Costco on MLK Blvd is still there or not.
The president grew up in Hawaii. He lived in Indonesia and had a transvestite nanny. I don’t think those places are food deserts. He went to an Ivy League university prior to choosing to work as a community organizer in Chicago. He then attended Harvard Law School. Do they not teach how to grow food at those pricey schools? I bet the president knew where to get some of the white powdery stuff in Chicago without having to hop a bus or subway. Priorities.

We live in AZ midway between Lake Havasu City and Bullhead City. It is a 35 mile trip to either for shopping, and we only go in once about every three weeks or monthly. But we live out here by choice and would have it no other way.

Today’s NYTs has a large article on a study debunking the whole “food desert” myth. It’s worth a read.
Gee, if you live in the White House, I’d imagine it’s quite a schlep to the the nearest grocery store, but do you really want to make such situations the basis for public policy for the rest of the country? A lot of “food deserts” may be in wealthy, gated communities.
