Dog-Eating and Obama’s Identity
PJ Media ^ | 4/19/2012 | David "Spengler" Goldman

What a careful reader will take away from Barack Obama’s memoir Dreams of My Father is not only that the president used to eat dog meat, but more importantly, that he identifies with dog-eaters. He wants us to understand that he is one of them. Obama’s most severe critics on the right think of Obama as a socialist, for example, Dinesh d’Souza, or Stanley Kurtz in his exhaustively-researched book Radical-in-Chief. Obama used to attend the annual “Socialist Scholars Conference” in New York, which was a hard-core affair; I went to a couple of them, and they weren’t for the curious. But there is something far more visceral, more existential to the president’s dislike of the United States, and that arises from his early residence in the Third World, and his identification with the people of the Third World whose lives are disrupted by the creative destruction that America has unleashed.

Obama is the son of a Kenyan Muslim father, the stepson of an Indonesian Muslim, and the child, most of all, of an American anthropologist who devoted her career to protecting Indonesian traditional life against the depredations of the global marketplace. Her doctoral dissertation, “Peasant blacksmithing in Indonesia: surviving against all odds,” celebrated traditional cultures hanging on desperately in the face of the global economic marketplace.

Ms. Dunham was not only a Communist fellow-traveler, but the sort of 1960s woman who (as we used to say) “put her body on the line,” first by marrying two Third World men, and then by spending her career in the Third World. It is no surprise that Obama considers the Third World morally superior to the United States.

And then when she became ill with cancer she moved back to the United States to collect her birthright medical attention from the country she hated.

Not only that, but she sent little Barry away from Indonesia back to the US to be educated in US schools, even before her marriage to Lolo fell apart.

Notice she didn't send him to a rural Indonesian village to become a peasant blacksmith, while bemoaning the loss of that way of life.

Ann Dunham Soetoro to Indonesians: "Science and techonology and education for me (and little Barry), but not for thee."

Dog is not halal, and eating dog is prohibited in Islam. Furthermore, dog is not eaten in the part of Indonesia where Obama lived. So the statement in his book may not even be true.

Well, I imagine most people that bought it only did so because it "felt good," not because they could actually read. The rest of us didn't care enough to read it because we figured an empty suit could only write an empty dust cover.

And stray dogs do seem to go missing in the vicinity of Bill Ayer's house.

Ms. Dunham was not only a Communist fellow-traveler

The actual quote is

"If you were concerned about something going wrong in the world, Stanley would know about it first," said Chip Wall, who described her as "a fellow traveler. . . . We were liberals before we knew what liberals were."

It's not at all clear that classmate Chip was saying that fellow liberal SAD supported the Communist party line. What he did mean is anybody's guess, and some guesses will be better than "Spengler's."

What a careful reader will take away from Barack Obama’s memoir Dreams of My Father is not only that the president used to eat dog meat, but more importantly, that he identifies with dog-eaters.

That's not actually the title of the book (but it's not like anybody actually read it, so I'll let that go).

Romney's putting the dog in a carrier on the car's roof somehow gets translated by liberal bloggers and talking-heads as an act of deliberate cruelty. It wasn't and wouldn't have been seen as such at the time.

We travel at 55 mph in a metal box (a car) and it wouldn't have been obvious forty years ago that taking a dog in a metal box (an animal carrier) at the same speed would have been cruel or unusual.

It was right to bring up Obama's comment about eating dog when the Obama people and the media tried to portray Romney as gratuitously cruel to animals. But I'm not sure that one can hang all this ideological baggage on a "Hey, I once ate dog, or snake, or grasshopper" statement.

It really isn’t unfair at all to bring Obama’s canine consumption to public attention. The president isn’t really one of us. He’s a dog-eater. He tells the story in his memoir to emphasize that viscerally, Obama identifies with the Third World of his upbringing more than with the America of his adulthood. It is our great misfortune to have a president who dislikes our country at this juncture in our history.

Spengler goes from expressing a certain amount of pity for dog-eating populations to this "they're not like us and Obama identifies with them, so he's one of them not one of us." That doesn't really follow from the facts.

Maybe Obama feels something like the pity Spengler expressed earlier. Or maybe he's just saying "Hey, I ate dog once. How about that, guys?" The identification with the dog-eaters and the hatred for the rest of us may be something "Spengler" is reading into a more innocent and less ideological remark.
