For fifteen years, the Wizard of the cesspool FreeRepublic has been beyond adamant that his little sewer would never -never- adopt an advertising, pay, or membership model. Well, what have we here?
... the beginning of the end? One can but hope.
"Alternatives to donor based, ie, freepathon business model" April 19, 2012 | Jim Robinson

I've checked with an ad agency. We can probably raise the funds we need to operate FR at our current level and at the current market price for online advertising if we run a banner ad at the top of every page and at least one rectangular ad in the above the fold body of the page and a couple rectangular ads in the sidebar. If that doesn't generate enough revenue, we can also run pop ups or pop unders and we can even run audio and video ads if need be. But of course, if we go full bore commercial, we'd have to insure strict copyright compliance with very brief excerpting of all articles to avoid lawsuits. And the agency would require that we install a filter to censor out any bad or unacceptable words in our posts.
Or, of course, there's always the membership model. We could setup a members only system where paying members get full access and non-paying members get throttled back, etc.
I don't like either of the above models and think we'd soon lose a lot of our readers and participants. Of course that may happen anyway if we can't fund it and if we cannot get our equipment problem under control, or if my refusal to vote for or support an abortionist/homosexualist/statist who has plans to install ObamaCare, er, I mean RomneyCare into all 50 states runs everyone off.
The donation model has served us very well since 1997 when we first started using it. It's very clean, uncomplicated and we attract participants who perhaps can't afford membership dues but do want to join the discussion and join our rallies, protests, prayer sessions, etc. And the advertising model would probably bring in the revenue, but it comes with strings attached.
I'm sure there are other ways and ways to combine features of various models, sell books, cds, gear, etc, offer no ads for paid subscribers, etc, even ISP services, but all of these also complicate matters.
I'm an old dog and I like to avoid new tricks, new complications, additional overhead, additional accounting, additional rules and regulations, etc, wherever possible. I like to stick to simplicity and with what works.
Thank you all very much for your continuing participation and support.
Is your solution to stay home this fall?
Nope, can't say that I do.One of the advantages of being an old geezer I suspect. Can I assume that it's not something you'd call your mother?
huh??? guess they've never actually been here...
Jim: Go for the advertising. You should do very well with some good old conservative sponsors connecting up with the Freeper community. I think they will line up to be part of FR.
Just don’t take any Limbaugh cast-offs. LOL.
But you have made the right decisions for 15 years so I’m not going to argue with you if you stick to the current model.
If donations aren't doing enough, I for one would be fine with a paid monthly/annual membership model, and certainly that beats taking on advertising in any form.
If you consider memberships, I would suggest drop the registered-but-non-"member" privs back to a lower level, say for example, allow posting a max of 2 comments per day, no profile page, and no posting articles. Enough to wet the whistle but not a very significant load on the servers.
Registered "members" get to do everything that we registered folks do now, and get a listing on the "members" page (unless anonymity requested).
Plus maybe offer something like a bumper sticker or FR Pajama Patrol Deputy badge for those of us who would flaunt it. :)
Have to think about whether being a paid member grants any zot resistance. I think not immunity, but at the same time it seems like there might be something to balance there, like say suspension rather than annihilation. Hmmmmm...
Anyway Jim, do whatever you have to do to keep FreeRepublic online and independent. I can't live without it!!
What if we pay-pal’d to an account to buy FR merchandise, like T-shirts and hats and bumper stickers, and got 2,5 or 10 bingo cards depending on the amount?
I like the idea of FR merchandise as well. I’m sure we would all love to have some FReeper stuff, and it would provide great gifts to annoy the heck out of liberals.
A FR tee shirt or baseball cap is FRee advertising and a great conversation starter.
We can do lots of things, but I’m pretty confident that we’ll make it through this Marxist induced downturn in the economy eventually and all boats will rise with the tide including ours. We’re going to continue plunging ahead, tighten our belts, raise the funds, beg, borrow or steal (metaphorically speaking), install some new equipment, make improvements when and where we can and continue fighting the good fight, unencumbered and unbeholden to anyone but our like-minded loyal participants and supporters.
In other words, damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!!
Thank you very much!!
Actually, I sort of like the capitalist model. The nice thing about being conservatives is that we get to use it proudly, they have to use it hypocritically and guiltily. Nothing funnier than a street vendor selling a "Smash Capitalism" t-shirt for a profit. Well, yes there is - the guy who buys it.
Count me in.
So far. :p
The gaming thing just doesn’t flutter my putter.
Ive been to Vegas a couple times on business and I had a riot, but by my nature I was resistant to it.
I would have never gone if it wasn’t for work.
I know gazillions of people love the game of chance, but I’m not so sure any semblance of gambling would reflect well on FR.
And again, I am not familiar with gaming regulation.
But don’t they have those neat little gold stars for donors?
Here’s a clue to help you figure it out. The people at DU are Rimjobbers.
Make your decision based on free market capitalism principals.
I’m no gamer, haven’t and never will go to Vegas for any reason.
I guess I’m thinking along the lines of a Live Thread that just happens to have a bingo game going on the lower-right corner of the screen.
Like we have debate live threads with drinking words? I dunno, just an idea.
I have wondered why a conservative site like Free Republic has what is in essence a PBS model of holding fund drives to pay for it’s operational budget while Democratic Underground draws a significant portion of it’s budget from a very capitalistic model of having ad revenue.
It really is past time to make a change that would provide Free Republic with a more predictable monetary stream. Other conservative forums have a model that includes advertising. It need not be anymore imposing than the current FReepathon posts on the top and in the thread pages.
Well drinkin words are different! LOL
> Nope,can't say that I do...
It has to do with a type of oral-anal sexual activity involving a tongue and a sunless place. Just thinking about it is 100% EEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. As the man said, "Don't go there, son, it's just not a good idea."
Using that name on Jim is a disgusting slur, which sadly is typical of DU.
It’s a sexual term of course. After all, these are liberals and that is their schtick. It’s in the same vein as teabaggers.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Free Marketing, baby!
How about for those who donate $5 a month you get a white star, for $10 a month you get a green star, for $15 a month you get a blue star, for $20 a month you get a red star and for a dollar a day donor, you get the gold!
or instead of stars its your name on the bottom of the posts?
“Maybe Rush would advertise it for ya once or twice.”
Club Gitmo redistributor.
And "principles" too. The man's got 'em, may as well use 'em! :)
Accusing others of what they do has always been a liberal hallmark.
Yep. They are contemptible.
But I’m going to offset my disgust with them by making a donation to FR.
I'm already a monthly contributor, and I'd definitely go in for some FR gear, and can think of a number of people who'd be getting such as stocking stuffers, et al if such merch were available.
Then I propose we name the next two liberal members of the Supreme Court after you. Kinda like a legacy.
I do, monthly, even though I haven’t had a paycheck in 5 years.
I just did.
I would pay a monthly or probably yearly to be a member.
Making the scummy trolls pay would be worth every penny.
Rush only charges 59.00 a year unless it’s gone up.
I think that’s damn reasonable.
Romney’s liberal supreme court picks you mean??
LOL.... hey I’m back on monthly pretty damned soon, looks like the financial crisis might be blowing over. Next payroll.
There is no stopping the American entrepreneur!
You could use an endowment, it would take about $2 million. A lot to most of us, but chump change to some.
I’d do it, but I’m not all that well endowed...
Actually there may be a fundraiser in there somewhere. Maybe you can auction off zots of annoying troll posters. I can imagine a mini-freep-a-thon progress bar that moves toward the zot threshold...
Of course long time members could buy immunity - another way to raise money, so they could make annoying posts about Ron Paul, or Mittens or whomever. The zottee could ante up to fend off the zotters.
But you (and the mods) still push the button, and keep all the donations.
I think funding may ebb and flow, but you provide a great forum and resource and I am confident you'll find the support you need.
Re: Rimjob, it’s always about sex with those people!
Of all the things about liberalism that puzzle me, it is their penchant for engaging in sexual perversion followed by their use of that same perversion as a pejorative.
It indicates a deep level of self-hate to me.
*sigh* Sadly, yes. Saying OH GOD I’M COMING! is as close to spirituality as a meat person ever gets.
Software that will censor us? You mean that I couldn’t say &@!$ or ?/#% any more?
FR is the best site on the web... great looking, user friendly, and obviously chock full of good info. It’s like an oasis.... no flashing ads or garish colors.
Anything you could do to maintain the visual integrity of the site would be appreciated.
What makes me love this site is its simplicity. JR - I will make a donation tomorrow.
That moniker isn’t used only by the DUmmies...
Watch your six.
Right. Threads can occasionally get on the, er...”racy” side, but there is a lot of self-control displayed in the discourse. It gets heated, but only rarely is there profanity (apart from Hell, Damn, etc.)
I don’t have a problem referring people to this site to read something. I can’t say from what I have seen, that I would ever do the same at DU.
Stay strong. They wish that they were one tenth of the man you are.
If you really believe that Romney and Obama would nominate the same people to the Supreme Court, there's not much more that can be said here.
Nah.. they're just morons.
Example of a card, which John could scramble for us to play on in SOTUs and debates and pressers, for example.
