A N.J. bully's punch to the abdomen left a middle school student paralyzed. Now the New Jersey school district that allowed this incident to happen has agreed to pay a $4.2 million to settle a lawsuit from the victim's family.
Sawyer Rosenstein complained to school officials about being repeatedly attacked by a known violent bully at the Eric Smith Middle School. The bully punched Rosenstein in the face a year earlier.
On Feb. 9, 2006, Rosenstein, then 12, emailed school officials asking for help.

Just three months later, he was punched in the abdomen at school on May 16, 2006. He complained of a pain in his back later that day at home.
Two days later his parents heard a scream from his bedroom.
"We picked him up and called an ambulance," the Rosenstein's father told The New Jersey Record. "He hasn't walked since."

This poor kid suffered permanent confinement to a wheelchair by a bully he had complained about for several months. But school systems will suspend kids who defend themselves from bullying. Parents need to stop using these institutions. They’re destructive to the young people they’re alleged to benefit.
That is a very sad story. It is too bad that a major portion of that does not come from the parents of the bully - and that the bully has not been incarcerated a minimum of 10 years for assault.
Lawyers probably got half if not more.
My question is why are the taxpayers responsible for this?
How about making the school OFFICIALS and bully pay out of their own pockets?

I just read this and forwarded to another article for more info. Seems the “bully” is being protected -no info on him/her.
And Florida will prosecute victims who defend themselves from their attackers.

What 12 year old writes email to the school saying he would like “coping mechanisms”
Then... he screams and falls down in his bedroom.... not on the schoolyard where he was suposedly injured
what kind of a an injusry causes parlysis 2 days later? (not saying it is not possible)
I may be cynical, but I bet we see this kid up and around spending his 4.5 mil
the schools are not complaining because this plays into the current “bullying” fad- for which we are going to certainly needs $billions of “funding” to solve...
I hope the amount was sufficient to keep the bully's family beating on the bully every day.
because beating him everyday will certainly make him a better, less bitter person. :p

Once he went back to class, he had to see his attacker every day. The violent bully had only received a few days of suspension.
Incredible. And what does the state care? It's not like the $4.2M is coming out of their pockets.
Nope, perhaps it would not - maybe just once ~might~ make him a better person.
But, I would imagine that the lack of punishment and guidance for the years prior have made that kid a rotten person that will never become a better person.
I do think that suits like this might be a good thing though. If there are enough of them it could help kill public education.

Taxpayers voted to have public schools and require their attendance. They then also hired those school officials, voted the spending measures, etc. So, taxpayers are just as guilty as it is their government that allowed this to happen.
Not to mention - what kid is going to spend from middle school through the rest of his teenage years in a wheelchair - from 12 years old to 19 - in the hopes of possible payoff.
Don't know what you're on, but you might consider putting it away - forever.
Actually, school districts carry insurance for stuff like this. It was the decision of the insurance company to settle, not the school district.
They should stop protecting bullies at this level and try them as adults.
