Coca-Cola habit linked to New Zealander's death

A pathologist said Natasha Harris's Coca-Cola habit probably contributed to her death in 2010. Photograph: AP

Natasha Harris, 30, of Invercargill, died from a heart attack in February 2010.

Dr Dan Mornin testified at an inquest on Thursday that Harris probably suffered from hypokalemia, or low potassium, which he thinks was caused by her excessive consumption of Coke and overall poor nutrition.

Mornin said toxic levels of caffeine, a stimulant found in cola, also may have contributed to her death.

Harris's partner, Chris Hodgkinson, testified that Harris drank between 8 and 10 litres of Coke every day. "She was addicted to Coke."

Hodgkinson said she ate little and smoked about 30 cigarettes a day. In the months before her death, he said, Harris had experienced blood pressure problems and lacked energy.

He said that on the morning of her death, Harris helped get her children ready for school before slumping against a wall. He called emergency services and tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but couldn't revive her.

Lisa te Morenga, a nutritionist at the University of Otago, told the Associated Press that excessive consumption of any type of liquid in a cool climate would be likely to play havoc with the body's natural systems and balances.

Karen Thompson, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola Oceania, said in a statement that its products were safe.

"We concur with the information shared by the coroner's office that the grossly excessive ingestion of any food product, including water, over a short period of time with the inadequate consumption of essential nutrients, and the failure to seek appropriate medical intervention when needed, can be dramatically symptomatic."

I remember in the last 60s when Diet Rite came out. It was determined that IF you drank 800 diet drinks a day for 20 years, you MIGHT get cancer. Seems they over dozed the rats in the study

Then they promptly banned the relatively innocuous cyclamates, and replaced them with psychosis inducing aspertame. *sigh*

Diet soda's are nasty for your health. Credible studies are being released lately on the dangers of aspartane and how it loads up in your body namely your liver and kidney's. Nasty stuff and the American people are consuming way too much of it not just in diet soda's.

but we can’t get an attention grabbing headline with “woman took piss poor care of herself and died young” nope, we have to blame it on some product of a multinational company

Oh, you got that right. No one is responsible for their own actions. Its always some big company because no one wants to be judgmental about a person who dies, is in bad health or otherwise in bad circumstances. Its like the mothers of kids who die or get badly hurt in gang shoot outs or some other dangerous activity. No one wants to say "hey, you raised him that way so stop blaming "guns" or some corporation for you kid's bad choices."

What is this caffeine? A stimulant found in Coca-Cola?

Please tell me if it’s found in other products, so I can avoid it.

What is this caffeine? A stimulant found in Coca-Cola?

Please tell me if it’s found in other products, so I can avoid it.

This will protect you:

Darksheare's coffee recipe:

“WARNING - Not to be taken internally!” - Slings and Arrows

In 12 cup drip percolator pot, fill to 6 cup mark with water.

In filter, put 6 heaping scoops of coffee.

Medium roast works best, just make sure it’s a robust blend. Found a maxwellhouse ‘medium roast’ that was rather anemic.

Put pinch of salt in filter, about as much as it would take to cover the surface of a dime with one even layer. This keeps the coffee from tasting burned too quickly, it doesn’t age well brewed this way.

Brew, recirculate if need be, usually not.

Add sugar and dairy creamer. Creamora and coffeemate are not recommended unless you like the heart racing that Ranger Pudding gives. That, and the nondairy creamer will give you both a headache and a buzz with the coffee.

I usually put about 8 spoons of sugar in this stuff, it ends up being like Russian Kava, thick and sweet with that bitter overtone to it.

Oh, and I am NOT responsible for seeming demonic possession of the coffeepot, or the coffeepot ending up acting as if it has been damaged.

Be sure NOT to add creamora or coffeemate to the brew, unless you LIKE ranger pudding style heart racing.

When I brew that stuff for myself, I recirculate the stuff to brew a second time, but that’s me for my own personal enjoyment, and it may wreck the coffeepot. Don’t forget the salt, it’s important to the finished brew.

Darks also explicitly warns against letting deer have his brew...

A chemist explained the problem with soft drinks to me and I only drink one on occasion after hearing him out. We all know that the original flavored soft drink was developed after tonics had already come along. A tonic of mineral-rich water that was naturally carbonated was given for upset stomach, and why it worked as a cure as understood by the chemist was as follows. Human organs are by design very similar to machines, and between organs there are very low electrical charges to maintain functions and equilibrium and coordination between them all. The kidneys have this low electrical process running to ensure waste removing functions are consistent. Experiments with carbonated waters show that the bubbly gas in the waters interrupts the electrical interplay, which temporarily slows down or suspends the processes of digestion (hence the temporary relief of stomach pain after a dose of tonic). This is all fine, following the limited use to which a medicinal tonic should be employed. Once we began to sweeten the tonics for the children to take without complaint and ultimately to market not as a tonic but as a refreshment problems began. The overuse of sweetened carbonated beverages actually harms rather than helps condition the body, because a constant disruption of the coordinating fields by the chemical interaction delays normal everyday bodily functions. Enough of it and your body cannot remove the dross accumulating in the old pipes: especially the refined sugar that is also included in the drink. It is easy to see how bad overall a heavy consumption of soft drinks are for your average body.

Sounds like SNL's satirical DC Mayor Marion Berry public service announcement against crack cocaine.

Whatever you do, never put the crack in the crack pipe, like this.

Then never light the crack pipe, like this.

And absolutely never, never inhale, like this.

Hoooaaa!!!

This is BS. Toxic levels of caffeine? Coffee has been shown to have no effect what so ever on heart disease(raises the blood pressure somewhat), but this guy is saying the relative low amounts in cola did her in. The problem was she was doing something that lowered her Potassium level. Too much potassium will kill you and too little will also. More that likely she was on some kind of diuretic, which takes the potassium out of your body, and didn’t eat a proper diet(one banana per day or one orange will do it)to maintain potassium levels. Seriously doubt the coke did her in. As another FReeper pointed out, as much liquids as she drank she was probably diabetic, with the unending diabetic thirst.

All the phosphoric acid probably didn’t help either.

2.25 gal/day?? I don’t think that is what killed her.

The vomiting 6 times a week probably destroyed her electrolytic levels. Combine the 1 -1/2 pack of cigarettes with 2.25 gal Coke, and the vomiting = one mixed up biochemistry.
