Americans Should Be Aware of What the Government Is Trying to Do to Our Privacy [Vehicle Black Box]
Fox News ^ | April 19, 2012 | Judge Napolitano

A new controversial measure could potentially impact every American who owns a car. Beginning in 2015, all cars will be required to be fitted with a black box data recorder, known officially as “event data recorders” or EDRs. These black box recorders work much like the ones on airplanes, capturing data related to a crash. In some cases, authorities can tap into a car’s EDR to check vehicle speed, airbag deployments, and pedal application a few seconds before and after impact.

I’d be OK with this if we also got to attach them to all government employees and elected officials so we can know what they are up to at all times.

This device will be powered by electricity, will it not?

And that electricity will be supplied by a wire, and the current that passes through that wire will also pass through a fuse, right? Or has the government found a way around that little inconvenience as well?

Will non-replacement of that fuse, if it should happen to blow out, become a federal offense?

I just did a survey on what it would take to get my '69 240Z back on the road. Wouldn't be that much. Body is ok, engine is ok, and it just needs some interior and cosmetic work.

And tires. Oof. That's gonna cost. I had to put the wide rims on it.

I'll never buy another American car until freedom returns.

The General and other such insurance companies might be getting more business when these boxes mysteriously start breaking.

I was just imagining today what life would be like when your employer tracks how long you spend in the bathroom.

And if law enforcement needs the data off of it, better be prepared to do something akin to a implied consent laws.

Want a license? You have to submit to warrantless search of your EDR.

This could be good, it is for the airline industry and just the “knowing” that there is record may deter some bad habits and prevent some accidents.

How's that gonna work if the "black box" is actually integrated into the engine management computer?

No. But the car won’t start.

So the data recorder has to give permission before you can start the car?

It's not a data recorder then. It's a government key to your car. Calling it a "data recorder" is like calling Obamacare's death panels "consideration of medical effectiveness committees." As the brilliant media genius Paul Krugman already has done.

Wow, you're right. The government has come up with the perfect, unbreakable, unhackable, inescapable system. There's no hope, because the government's full of absolute geniuses who devise foolproof systems every day.

I apologize for being such a dunce.

This device will be powered by electricity, will it not?

Not so easy. It will have a chip, and the chip will undoubtedly feed-back to the pooter... so if the blackbox isn't running, the pooter won't let the car start...

Folks need to pick up a pre85 pickup truck and leave it in the back yard... My 78 chevy 1/2T 4x4 mostly just plows snow nowadays, but so long as I can find gas, it will run...

Dear Gertie,

I wonder if you ever thought about it this way -

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety
deserve neither liberty nor safety.” ~Benjamin Franklin

Oh Lord, please save us from the Black Box, Congress and ourselves!

Everyone, please get on your phones right now and call your congressional representative’s office (Washington) make sure you tell your representative that you are sick to death of this latest abridgment of our constitutional rights and FULLY expect him/her to vote NO! This is just more intrusion into our private lives, more conditioning. (House switchboard is 202-224-3121)

I don’t know about you, but, I’m 62 years old and have earned the right to be left to my own devices. I told my representative to vote NO! I’m going to rip the box out of any car I purchased – then you can come get me!

You may want to ask him/her, if he/she votes for this how is he/she any different than Barack Obama?
