Chips Moman and Dan Penn split up in 1969, and Moman took direct charge of the Box Tops, taking no guff from Alex Chilton. Wayne Carson collected another gold record for his shelf.

Note the key change from A to E at 1:12 for the Middle 8 and the brilliant way Carson gets back to A Major at 1:31. This song is a masterpiece.

The Box Tops: “Soul Deep”

This marked the end of the Box Tops and Alex Chilton’s work with Chips Moman. Years later, Chilton would form a band, Big Star, that would explore some of the Hot Country territory he had missed by getting on the wrong side of Moman. In a typically pigheaded move, Chilton insisted that his early records, recorded in the UK, not be sold in the US. Afficionados of Chilton had to buy bootlegged editions of his albums for a number of years.

Chilton died in 2010 at the age of 59, still showing total disrespect for his fans.

Taps Played for 15 forgotten Vets today as their ashes were identified and placed in the Southern Arizona Veteran Memorial Cemetery with full military Honors before a large crowd of citizens.

We were told that the ashes of 1000 more vets have been ID’d.

When you’re an established hit songwriter, a lot of material that might otherwise be forgotten gets recorded. Wayne Carson doesn’t include this in his official list of songs, which is unfortunate, because it’s one of his better entries. This song was a regional hit in the South in the summer of 1969 and deserves a listen. Carson had nothing to be ashamed of.
